Context of Isaiah 43:18
16The Lord is the one who made a road through the sea for you to cross. You went on a dry path in the middle of the deep water. 17He led the enemy's great army, with their chariots and their horses, to chase you. They all fell down and the water drowned them. Their lives finished, like the flame of a lamp that stops burning. The Lord did all that for you, but now he says, ‘Forget those things that happened a long time ago. Do not think about past events. 19Look! Now I will do something that is new! It is already beginning to happen. Surely, you can recognize it. Yes, I will make a road through the desert. I will make streams in the wilderness. 20The wild animals in the desert praise me, including the jackals and the owls. They praise me because I put water in the desert, and streams in the wilderness. I am giving water to the people that I have chosen, so that they will not be thirsty.

Commentaries on Isaiah 43:18
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 18Remember ye not - So great and wonderful shall be God‘s future interpositions in your behalf, that what he has done, great as that was, shall be comparatively forgotten. The former things - The deliverance from Egypt, and the overthrow of his enemies there. The things of old - The things that were formerly done.Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 14-21Verses 14-21 The deliverance from Babylon is foretold, but there is reference to greater events. The redemption of sinners by Christ, the conversion of the Gentiles, and the recall of the Jews, are described. All that is to be done to rescue sinners, and to bring the believer to glory, is little, compared with that wondrous work of love, the redemption of man.Read the comment

- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 1818. So wonderful shall be God's future interpositions in your behalf, that all past ones shall be forgotten in comparison. Plainly the future restoration of Israel is the event ultimately meant. Thus the "former things" are such events as the destruction of Sennacherib and the return from Babylon. "Things of old" are events still more ancient, the deliverance from Egypt and at the Red Sea, and entry into Canaan [Vitringa].Read the comment
