Context of Hosea 5:13
11Ephraim is oppressed—crushed by punishment, because its people are determined to chase idols. 12I will destroy Ephraim as a moth destroys clothing. I will destroy the nation of Judah as rot destroys wood. “When Ephraim saw that he was sick and when Judah saw his own wounds, Ephraim went to Assyria to ask the great king for help. But the king couldn’t cure them or heal their wounds. 14I will be like a lion to Ephraim and like a young lion to the nation of Judah. I will carry ⌞them⌟ off, and no one will rescue ⌞them⌟. 15I will go back to my place until they admit that they are guilty. Then they will search for me. In their distress they will eagerly look for me.”

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 13When Ephraim saw his sickness - When both Israel and Judah felt their own weakness to resist their enemies, instead of calling upon and trusting in me, they sought sinful alliances, and trusted in their idols. King Jareb - This name occurs nowhere in Scripture but here and in Hosea 10:6. The Vulgate and Targum render ירב yareb, an avenger, a person whom they thought able to save them from their enemies. It is well known that Menahem, king of Israel…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 13When Ephraim saw his sickness - Literally, “And Ephraim saw,” i. e., perceived it. God proceeds to tell them, how they acted when they felt those lighter afflictions, the decline and wasting of their power. The “sickness” may further mean the gradual inward decay; the “wound,” blows received from without. And sent to king Jareb - Or, as in the English margin “a king who should plead, or, an avenging king.” The “hostile king” is, probably, the same…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 8-15Verses 8-15 The destruction of impenitent sinners is not mere talk, to frighten them, it is a sentence which will not be recalled. And it is a mercy that we have timely warning given us, that we may flee from the wrath to come. Compliance with the commandments of men, who thwart the commandments of God, ripens a people for ruin. The judgments of God are sometimes to a sinful people as a moth, and as rottenness, or as a worm; as these consume the clothes…Read the comment
