Context of Ezekiel 23:30
28“This is what the Almighty Lord says: I’m going to hand you over to those you hate and to those you turned away from in disgust. 29They will treat you hatefully and take away everything that you have worked for. They will leave you naked and bare. The shame of your prostitution will be revealed. Your sinning and your prostitution have done this to you, because you lusted after the nations and dishonored yourself with their idols. 31You’ve acted the same way as your sister. That is why I will put her cup in your hand. 32This is what the Almighty Lord says: You will drink from your sister’s cup, a cup that is deep and wide. You will be scorned and mocked, because this cup holds so much.

Commentaries on Ezekiel 23:30
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 1-49This chapter, like chapter 16, tells the history of the northern and southern kingdoms of Israel and Judah. It does this through an extended metaphor (a comparison that continues through many verses). In this comparison, Samaria and Jerusalem, the capital cities, are described as two immoral women. The language is strong and direct. This metaphor shows that their judgment was certain and deserved.Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 1-49The imagery is similar to that in the sixteenth chapter; but here the reference is not as there so much to the breach of the spiritual marriage covenant with God by the people's idolatries, as by their worldly spirit, and their trusting to alliances with the heathen for safety, rather than to God. 2. two ... of one mother--Israel and Judah, one nation by birth from the same ancestress, Sarah.Read the comment
