Context of Ezekiel 23:30
28For thus says the Lord God, ‘Behold, I will place you into the hands of those whom you hate, into the hands of those from whom you turned away in disgust. 29They will deal with you in hatred, take all your property, and leave you naked and bare. And the nakedness of your depravity will be uncovered, both your lewdness and your obscene practices. These things will be done to you because you have prostituted yourself with the [Gentile] nations, because you have defiled yourself with their idols. 31You have walked in the way of your sister (Samaria); therefore I will give her cup [of judgment] into your hand.’ 32Thus says the Lord God, ‘You will drink your sister’s cup, Which is deep and wide [and filled to the brim]. You shall be laughed at and derided; It contains much [too much to endure].

Commentaries on Ezekiel 23:30
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 1-49This chapter, like chapter 16, tells the history of the northern and southern kingdoms of Israel and Judah. It does this through an extended metaphor (a comparison that continues through many verses). In this comparison, Samaria and Jerusalem, the capital cities, are described as two immoral women. The language is strong and direct. This metaphor shows that their judgment was certain and deserved.Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 1-49The imagery is similar to that in the sixteenth chapter; but here the reference is not as there so much to the breach of the spiritual marriage covenant with God by the people's idolatries, as by their worldly spirit, and their trusting to alliances with the heathen for safety, rather than to God. 2. two ... of one mother--Israel and Judah, one nation by birth from the same ancestress, Sarah.Read the comment
