Context of Deuteronomy 33:11
9They said that they didn’t know their father and mother. They didn’t recognize their own brothers. They didn’t acknowledge their own children. But they obeyed your word and were faithful to the terms of your promise. 10They teach Jacob your rules and give Israel your teachings. They burn incense for you to smell and sacrifice burnt offerings on your altar. Lord, bless them with strength and be pleased with the work they do. Break the backs of those who attack them and hate them so that they can never get up again.” 12About the tribe of Benjamin he said, “The Lord’s beloved people will live securely with him. The Lord will shelter them all day long, since he, too, lives on the mountain slopes.” 13About the tribes of Joseph he said, “May the Lord bless their land with ⌞water,⌟ the best gift heaven can send, with dew and deep springs below the ground.

Commentaries on Deuteronomy 33:11
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 11Bless, Lord, his substance - The blessing of God to the tribe of Levi was peculiarly necessary, because they had no inheritance among the children of Israel, and lived more immediately than others upon the providence of God. Yet, as they lived by the offerings of the people and the tithes, the increase of their substance necessarily implied the increase of the people at large: the more fruitful the land was, the more abundant would the tithes of the…Read the comment

- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 6-23Verses 6-23 The order in which the tribes are here blessed, is not the same as is observed elsewhere. The blessing of Judah may refer to the whole tribe in general, or to David as a type of Christ. Moses largely blesses the tribe of Levi. Acceptance with God is what we should all aim at, and desire, in all our devotions, whether men accept us or not, 2Co 5:9. This prayer is a prophecy, that God will keep up a ministry in his church to the end of time. The…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 1-29On the day before he died, Jacob blessed his 12 sons (Genesis 49:1–28). Many years later, Moses also blessed these same sons. By that time, they had become large and powerful tribes. Moses, like Jacob, spoke as a founding father of the nation.Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 1-281. Moses the man of God--This was a common designation of a prophet (1Sa 2:27; 9:6), and it is here applied to Moses, when, like Jacob, he was about to deliver ministerially before his death, a prophetic benediction to Israel.Read the comment
