Context of 1 Kings 13:22
20When they were sitting at the table, the Lord spoke his word to the old prophet who had brought back the man of God. 21The Lord also called to the man of God. He said, “This is what the Lord says: You rebelled against the words from the Lord’s mouth and didn’t obey the command that the Lord your God gave you. You came back, ate, and drank at this place about which he told you, ‘Don’t eat or drink there.’ That is why your dead body will not be allowed to be placed in the tomb of your ancestors.” 23After the old prophet had something to eat and drink, he saddled the donkey for the prophet whom he had brought back. 24The man of God left. A lion found him ⌞as he traveled⌟ on the road and killed him. His dead body was thrown on the road. The donkey and the lion were standing by the body.

- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 11-22Verses 11-22 The old prophet's conduct proves that he was not really a godly man. When the change took place under Jeroboam, he preferred his ease and interest to his religion. He took a very bad method to bring the good prophet back. It was all a lie. Believers are most in danger of being drawn from their duty by plausible pretences of holiness. We may wonder that the wicked prophet went unpunished, while the holy man of God was suddenly and severely…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 20-22Even though the old prophet lied, God spoke through him. The harsh judgment against the man of God was that he would not be buried in his family tomb due to his disobedience. This punishment happened swiftly. Disobeying God's clear command is a serious offense (Numbers 14:21–23; Deuteronomy 11:26–28).Read the comment

It could not be either Iddo or Ahijah, for both were alive after the events here related. Jeroboam stood by the altar to burn incense--It was at one of the annual festivals. The king, to give interest to the new ritual, was himself the officiating priest. The altar and its accompaniments would, of course…Read the comment
