Titus 1:7
7A leader in the church serves the believers on God's behalf. Because of that, nobody should have a reason to say that the leader has done anything wrong. A leader must not be proud. He must not become angry easily. He should not like to drink too much wine. He must not be someone who likes to fight. He must not want to get a lot of money for himself.

Context of Titus 1:7
5I left you in Crete so that you could finish certain things. You should make right some things that were wrong. And you should choose leaders of the believers in every town, as I told you. 6This is what a leader in the church must be like. Nobody should have a reason to say that he has done something wrong. He must be the husband of only one wife. He must have children who respect him. Nobody should say that they enjoy bad things or that they do not obey their parents. A leader in the church serves the believers on God's behalf. Because of that, nobody should have a reason to say that the leader has done anything wrong. A leader must not be proud. He must not become angry easily. He should not like to drink too much wine. He must not be someone who likes to fight. He must not want to get a lot of money for himself. 8Instead, he must be happy to have visitors in his home. He must want to do good things. He must be careful in how he lives. He must do what is right. He must want to serve God well. He must control himself well. 9A leader in the church must continue to believe the true message very well. That is the message which we have taught. Then he will be able to teach people what is true and right. He will also show that people who speak against the true message are wrong.

Commentaries on Titus 1:7
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 7Not self-willed - · Not one who is determined to have his own way in every thing; setting up his own judgment to that of all others; expecting all to pay homage to his understanding. Such a governor in the Church of God can do little good, and may do much mischief. Not soon angry - · Not a choleric man; one who is irritable; who is apt to be inflamed on every opposition; one who has not proper command over his own temper.Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 7For a bishop must be blameless - 1 Timothy 3:2. As the steward of God - See notes, 1 Corinthians 4:1-2. A man, in order to perform the duties of such an office, should be one against whom no accusation could lie. Not self-willed - Compare 2 Peter 2:10. The word - ̓́ authadēs- does not elsewhere occur in the New Testament. It means, properly, self-complacent; and then, assuming, arrogant, imperious; Robinson, Lexicon - The gist of the offence - the very…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 5-9Verses 5-9 The character and qualification of pastors, here called elders and bishops, agree with what the apostle wrote to Timothy. Being such bishops and overseers of the flock, to be examples to them, and God's stewards to take care of the affairs of his household, there is great reason that they should be blameless. What they are not to be, is plainly shown, as well as what they are to be, as servants of Christ, and able ministers of the letter and…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 7A church leader (or An overseer, or A bishop) is a manager of God’s household: See 1:11; 2:2–10; 1 Timothy 1:4; 3:4–5, 12, 15; 2 Timothy 2:20–21. These qualities indicate that an elder should not behave like the people in Crete known for their immorality (see Titus 1:12).Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 77. For ... must--The emphasis is on "must." The reason why I said "blameless," is the very idea of a "bishop" (an overseer of the flock; he here substitutes for "presbyter" the term which expresses his duties) involves the necessity for such blamelessness, if he is to have influence over the flock. steward of God--The greater the master is, the greater the virtues required in His servant [Bengel], (1Ti 3:15); the Church is God's house, over which the…Read the comment
