Context of Revelation 9:16
14The voice said to the sixth angel, ‘There are four angels at the great Euphrates river. Someone has tied them so that they cannot move. You must go and undo them!’ 15So the four angels now became free. God had kept them ready for that special time, for that hour, in that day, in that month, in that year. They were now ready to kill a third of people everywhere. I heard how many soldiers there were in their great army. There were 200 million soldiers who rode on horses. 17In my vision, I saw the soldiers and their horses. The soldiers had shields over the front of their bodies. The shields had many colours. They were bright red like fire, bright blue, and yellow like sulphur. The horses' heads looked like lions' heads. Fire, smoke and sulphur came out of their mouths. 18The fire, the smoke and the sulphur killed people. These three dangerous things killed a third of people everywhere.

Commentaries on Revelation 9:16
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 16Two hundred thousand thousand - · Two myriads of myriads; that is, two hundred millions; an army that was never yet got together from the foundation of the world, and could not find forage in any part of the earth. Perhaps it only means vast numbers, multitudes without number. Such a number might be literally true of the locusts. Those who will have their particular system supported by the images in this most obscure book, tell us that the number here…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 16And the number of the army of the horsemen - It is to be observed here that the strength of the army seemed to be cavalry. In the former plagues there is no distinct mention of horsemen; but here what struck the beholder was the immense and unparalleled number of horsemen. Were two hundred thousand thousand - A thousand thousand is one million, and consequently the number here referred to would be 200 million. This would be a larger army than was ever…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 13-21Verses 13-21 The sixth angel sounded, and here the power of the Turks seems the subject. Their time is limited. They not only slew in war, but brought a poisonous and ruinous religion. The antichristian generation repented not under these dreadful judgments. From this sixth trumpet learn that God can make one enemy of the church a scourge and a plague to another. The idolatry in the remains of the eastern church and elsewhere, and the sins of professed…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 16The connection between the four angels and their army is unclear. two hundred million: This number symbolizes an extremely large group that cannot be counted. Even at its greatest strength, the ancient Roman army with twenty-one legions numbered only about 126,000 soldiers. It is not useful to use this number to identify any specific country with such an overwhelming destructive force.Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 1616. Compare with these two hundred million, Psa 68:17; Da 7:10. The hosts here are evidently, from their numbers and their appearance (Re 9:17), not merely human hosts, but probably infernal, though constrained to work out God's will (compare Re 9:1, 2). and I heard--A, B, Aleph, Vulgate, Syriac, Coptic, and Cyprian omit "and."Read the comment
