Context of Matthew 27:59
57That evening a rich man who came from a town called Arimathea went to Pilate. The man's name was Joseph, and he had become a disciple of Jesus. 58Joseph asked Pilate for the dead body of Jesus. Pilate told his soldiers to give Jesus' body to Joseph. So Joseph took Jesus' body. He put a clean piece of linen cloth around it. 60Then he put the body in a large hole in a rock. He had made the hole for his own body when he died. After he put Jesus' body there, he rolled a very big stone across the front of the hole to shut it. Then he went away. 61Mary from Magdala and Mary the mother of James were there. They were sitting where they could see the hole in the rock where Joseph had put Jesus' body.

Commentaries on Matthew 27:59
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 59Wrapped it in a clean linen cloth - The Jews, as well as the Egyptians, added spices to keep the body from putrefaction, and the linen was wrapped about every part to keep the aromatics in contact with the flesh. From John 19:39, John 19:40, we learn that a mixture of myrrh and aloes of one hundred pounds' weight had been applied to the body of Jesus when he was buried. And that a second embalmment was intended, we learn from Luke 23:56; Luke 24:1, as the…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 59“He wrapped it in a clean linen cloth.” John adds that this was done “with spices” John 19:40. The Jews were accustomed to use myrrh, aloes, and other aromatics in large quantities when they buried their dead. When they were not regularly embalmed, which was a long and tedious process, they enclosed the spices in the folds of the linen, or wrapped the body in it. Spices were sometimes used in such quantities as to form a “heap or bed,” on which the dead…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 57-61Verses 57-61 In the burial of Christ was nothing of pomp or solemnity. As Christ had not a house of his own, wherein to lay his head, while he lived, so he had not a grave of his own, wherein to lay his body, when he was dead. Our Lord Jesus, who had no sin of his own, had no grave of his own. The Jews designed that he should have made his grave with the wicked, should have been buried with the thieves with whom he was crucified, but God overruled it, so…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 59-60Burial customs were important in Judaism, unlike the Greeks and Romans who cremated their dead. Jews considered leaving a body unburied to be a severe punishment (Deuteronomy 21:22–23; 2 Kings 9:37; Psalm 79:3; Jeremiah 16:4, 6; Ezekiel 29:5; Revelation 11:9). People mourned and lamented death (Mark 5:38–39). They washed the body (Acts 9:37). They anointed the body (Matt 26:6–13; John 12:3, 7; 19:39). And they wrapped the body in burial cloths (Matthew…Read the comment
