Context of Mark 6:29
27So immediately, the king sent a soldier to go to John. The king told the soldier that he must bring John's head. So the soldier went to the prison and he cut off John's head there. 28Then he brought it back on a plate. He gave it to the girl, and she gave it to her mother. People told John's disciples about what had happened. So they went to the prison. They took away John's body and they buried it. 30The apostles all came to Jesus. They told him about all the things that they had done. And they told him what they had taught. 31Many people were coming to Jesus and then going away. Jesus and his disciples were too busy even to eat. So Jesus said to them, ‘Come with me to a place where there are no other people. We should be alone together. Then we can rest for a short time.’

- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 14-29Verses 14-29 Herod feared John while he lived, and feared him still more when he was dead. Herod did many of those things which John in his preaching taught him; but it is not enough to do many things, we must have respect to all the commandments. Herod respected John, till he touched him in his Herodias. Thus many love good preaching, if it keep far away from their beloved sin. But it is better that sinners persecute ministers now for faithfulness, than…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 29This verse is similar to the description of the death and burial of Jesus (see 15:43–46). Disciples of John existed after his death until at least the AD 200s (see Acts 18:24–19:7).Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 2929. And when his disciples heard of it--that is, the Baptist's own disciples. they came and took up his corpse, and laid it in a tomb--"and went and told Jesus" (Mt 14:12). If these disciples had, up to this time, stood apart from Him, as adherents of John (Mt 11:2), perhaps they now came to Jesus, not without some secret reflection on Him for His seeming neglect of their master; but perhaps, too, as orphans, to cast in their lot henceforth with the…Read the comment
