Context of Luke 2:41
39When Mary and Joseph had done everything that God's rules said, they returned home. That was in the town of Nazareth in Galilee. 40There the child grew up. God was good and kind to him and he became strong. He learned many things and he could understand them well. Every year, Mary and Joseph went to Jerusalem for the Passover festival. 42When Jesus was 12 years old, his parents took him with them to Jerusalem. They went as usual for the festival. 43When the week finished, Mary and Joseph left Jerusalem to return home. But Jesus stayed behind and his parents did not know this.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 41His parents went - every year - This was their constant custom, because positively enjoined by the law, Exodus 23:17. But it does not appear that infants were obliged to be present; and yet all the men-children are positively ordered to make their appearance at Jerusalem thrice in the year, Exodus 34:23. And our Lord, being now twelve years old, Luke 2:42, accompanies his parents to the feast. Probably this was the very age at which the male children were…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 41-52Verses 41-52 It is for the honour of Christ that children should attend on public worship. His parents did not return till they had stayed all the seven days of the feast. It is well to stay to the end of an ordinance, as becomes those who say, It is good to be here. Those that have lost their comforts in Christ, and the evidences of their having a part in him, must bethink themselves where, and when, and how they lost them, and must turn back again…Read the comment
