Context of John 7:30
28Jesus was still teaching in the yard of the temple. He shouted, ‘Yes, you say that you know me. And you know where I came from. But I have not come because I myself decided to come. He who sent me is true. You do not know him. 29But I know him because I have come from him. He is the one who sent me.’ When they heard this, they tried to take hold of him. But nobody could put their hands on him, because it was not yet the right time. 31But many people in the crowd believed in Jesus. They said, ‘This man has done so many miracles. Surely he is the Messiah! Nobody could do more miracles than he has done.’ 32The Pharisees heard what these people were saying quietly about Jesus. Then the leaders of the priests and the Pharisees sent some of their officers to take him away.

Commentaries on John 7:30
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 25-30Verses 25-30 Christ proclaimed aloud, that they were in error in their thoughts about his origin. He was sent of God, who showed himself true to his promises. This declaration, that they knew not God, with his claim to peculiar knowledge, provoked the hearers; and they sought to take him, but God can tie men's hands, though he does not turn their hearts.Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 30His hour had not yet come: Those who opposed Jesus could not arrest him. This was because, according to God's plan, the time for Jesus to be glorified on the cross had not yet come (see study note on 12:23; see also 10:17–18; 18:6–8). All four arrest scenes in 7:1–8:59 emphasize that Jesus was in control, not the Jewish leaders.Read the comment
