Context of John 20:21
19On the evening of that same day, the first day of the week, the disciples were meeting together. They had locked the doors of the room because they were afraid of the Jewish leaders. Then Jesus came and he stood among them. He said to them, ‘Peace be with you.’ 20After he had said this, he showed them his hands and his side. The disciples were very, very happy when they saw the Lord. Jesus said again, ‘Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, in the same way I am now sending you.’ 22When he had said this, he breathed on them. He said, ‘Receive God's Holy Spirit. 23If you forgive a person's sins, God will forgive them too. If you do not forgive them, God will not forgive them.’

- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 21As my Father hath sent me - As God sent me to preach, to be persecuted, and to suffer; to make known his will, and to offer pardon to men, so I send you. This is the design and the extent of the commission of the ministers of the Lord Jesus. He is their model; and they will be successful only as they study his character and imitate his example. This commission he proceeds to confirm by endowing them all with the gift of the Holy Spirit.Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 19-25Verses 19-25 This was the first day of the week, and this day is afterwards often mentioned by the sacred writers; for it was evidently set apart as the Christian sabbath, in remembrance of Christ's resurrection. The disciples had shut the doors for fear of the Jews; and when they had no such expectation, Jesus himself came and stood in the midst of them, having miraculously, though silently, opened the doors. It is a comfort to Christ's disciples, when…Read the comment
