Context of John 2:24
22The disciples remembered this when Jesus had become alive again after his death. They remembered that he had said this. Then they believed what the Bible taught. They also believed the words that Jesus had spoken. 23While Jesus was in Jerusalem for the Passover festival, he did many miracles. Many people saw these miracles that showed he was from God. As a result, they believed in Jesus. But Jesus himself did not trust the people. He knew what all people are really like. 25He did not need anyone to tell him what people are like. He knew already what was really in each person.

Commentaries on John 2:24
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 24He knew all men - Instead of all men, EGH, and about thirty others, read , every man, or all things; and this I am inclined to believe is the true reading. Jesus knew all things; and why? Because he made all things, John 1:3, and because he was the all-wise God, John 1:1; and he knew all men, because he alone searches the heart, and tries the reins. He knows who are sincere, and who are hypocritical: he knows those in whom he can confide, and those to…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 24Did not commit himself - The word translated “commit” here is the same which in John 2:23 is translated “believed.” It means to put “trust” or “confidence in.” Jesus did not put “trust” or “reliance” in them. He did not leave himself in their hands. He acted cautiously and prudently. The proper time for him to die had not come, and he secured his own safety. The reason why he did not commit himself to them is “that he knew all men.” He knew the…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 23-25Verses 23-25 Our Lord knew all men, their nature, dispositions, affections, designs, so as we do not know any man, not even ourselves. He knows his crafty enemies, and all their secret projects; his false friends, and their true characters. He knows who are truly his, knows their uprightness, and knows their weaknesses. We know what is done by men; Christ knows what is in them, he tries the heart. Beware of a dead faith, or a formal profession: carnal…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 24John uses a play on words here. Because of Jesus’s signs (miracles that show who he is), many people trusted in him (2:23). But Jesus did not trust them in the same way. This statement does not refer only to certain people in Jerusalem. It shows that Jesus knows what is inside every person. He understands people’s thoughts, motives (reasons for acting), and desires.Read the comment
