Context of John 10:39
37If I am not doing my Father's work, do not believe me. 38But if I am doing his work, you should believe that work. Even if you do not believe me, you should believe the things that I do. Then you will know certainly that the Father is in me. And you will know that I am in the Father.’ Again, the Jewish leaders tried to take hold of Jesus. But he escaped from them. 40After that, Jesus returned across the Jordan River. He went to the place where John had earlier baptized people. Jesus stayed there. 41Many people came to him. They said to each other, ‘John did not do any miracles. But everything that he said about this man was true.’

Commentaries on John 10:39
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 39They sought again to take him - They could not reply to his arguments but by stones. The evidence of the truth could not be resisted; and they endeavored to destroy the person who spoke it. Truth may confound the obstinately wicked, but it does not convert them; and it is a just judgment of God, to leave those to perish in their gainsayings who obstinately continue to gainsay and disbelieve. But he escaped - In such a way as we know not, for the…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 39Sought again to take him - They evidently understood him as still claiming equality with God, and under this impression Jesus left them. Nor can it be doubted that he intended to leave them with this impression; and if so, then he is divine. He escaped - See John 8:59.Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 39-42Verses 39-42 No weapon formed against our Lord Jesus shall prosper. He escaped, not because he was afraid to suffer, but because his hour was not come. Persecutors may drive Christ and his gospel our of their own city or country, but they cannot drive him or it out of the world. When we know Christ by faith in our hearts…Read the comment

- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 37-3937-39. though ye believe not me, believe the works--There was in Christ's words, independently of any miracles, a self-evidencing truth, majesty and grace, which those who had any spiritual susceptibility were unable to resist (Joh 7:46; 8:30). But, for those who wanted this, "the works" were a mighty help. When these failed, the case was desperate indeed. that ye may know and believe that the Father is in me, and I in him--thus reiterating His claim to…Read the comment
