Context of Job 5:9
7But trouble comes to everyone, as soon as they are born. It is as certain as smoke that rises from a fire. 8I suggest that you ask God to help you. You should tell him about your problems. He does great things that nobody can understand. He does more miracles than anyone can count. 10He gives rain for the earth. He sends water for the fields. 11He gives honour to humble people. When people are suffering, he puts them in a safe place.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 9Which doeth great things - No work, however complicated, is too deep for his counsel to plan; none, however stupendous, is too great for his power to execute. He who is upright is always safe in referring his cause to God, and trusting in him.Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 9Which doeth great things - The object of this is, to show why Job should commit his cause to God. The reason suggested is, that he had showed himself qualified to govern the world by the great and wonderful acts which he performed. Eliphaz, therefore, proceeds to expatiate on what God had done, and thus states the ancient belief in regard to his sovereignty over the world. This strain of reasoning continues to the end of the chapter. There is great beauty…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 6-16Verses 6-16 Eliphaz reminds Job, that no affliction comes by chance, nor is to be placed to second causes. The difference between prosperity and adversity is not so exactly observed, as that between day and night, summer and winter; but it is according to the will and counsel of God. We must not attribute our afflictions to fortune, for they are from God; nor our sins to fate, for they are from ourselves. Man is born in sin, and therefore born to trouble…Read the comment
