3He sends lightning across the whole sky. Its light reaches everywhere on the earth. 4After the lightning comes the sound of his voice. He roars like the great sound of thunder. When he speaks like that, the storm never stops. When God's voice speaks, he causes wonderful things to happen. He does great things that we cannot understand. 6He tells the snow to fall to the earth. He tells the rain to pour down and make the ground wet. 7He does that to show people what he can do. - Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 5God thundereth marvellously with his voice - This is the conclusion of Elihu's description of the lightning and thunder: and here only should chapter 36 have ended. Probably the writer of the book of Job had seen the description of a similar thunder storm as given by the psalmist, Psalm 77:16-19; : - Psalm 77:16; The waters saw thee, O God!…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 5God thundereth marvelously - He thunders in a wonderful manner. The idea is, that the voice of his thunder is an amazing exhibition of his majesty and power. Great things doeth he, which we cannot comprehend - That is, not only in regard to the thunder and the tempest, but in other things. The description of the storm properly ends here, and in the subsequent verses Elihu proceeds to specify various other phenomena, which were wholly incomprehensible by…Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 55. (Job 36:26; Psa 65:6; 139:14). The sublimity of the description lies in this, that God is everywhere in the storm, directing it whither He will [Barnes]. See Psa 29:1-11, where, as here, the "voice" of God is repeated with grand effect. The thunder in Arabia is sublimely terrible.Read the comment
