Context of Psalms 40:5
3He gave me a new song to sing. It was a song to praise our God. Many people will see what God has done to help me. Then they will respect and obey him. Yes, they will trust in the Lord. 4If anyone trusts in the Lord he blesses them! They do not expect proud people to help them. They do not join with those people who worship false gods. Lord, my God, you have done many great things. You have done so many things for us that we cannot count them! There is nobody else like you! I want to talk about the things that you have done, but there are too many things to speak about! 6You do not really want sacrifices and offerings. I understand that! You do not ask for burnt offerings or sin offerings. 7Then I said, ‘Here I am, my God! The message that is written in the book tells me what I must do.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 5Many - are thy wonderful works - The psalmist seems here astonished and confounded at the counsels, loving-kindnesses, and marvellous works of the Lord, not in nature, but in grace; for it was the mercy of God towards himself that he had now particularly in view.Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 5Many, O Lord my God, are thy wonderful works which thou hast done - literally, “Many (things), O Lord my God, hast thou done; thy wonderful things and thy thoughts toward us, it is not (possible) to state unto thee.” The recollection of the particular kindness shown to the speaker, as referred to in the previous verses, suggests the recollection of the great number of wonders that God had done for his people - the acts of his kindness which it would be…Read the comment
