Context of Jeremiah 50:22
20In those days and at that time,’ says the Lord, ‘a search will be made for the wickedness of Israel, but there will be none and for the sins of Judah, but none will be found, for I will pardon those whom I leave as a remnant.’ 21“Go against [Babylon] the land of Merathaim (Double Rebellion), Go up against it and against the people of Pekod (Punishment). Kill and utterly destroy them,” says the Lord, “And do everything that I have commanded you.” “The noise of battle is in the land, And [the noise of] great destruction. 23How the hammer of the whole earth Is crushed and broken! How Babylon has become A horror [of desolation] among the nations! 24I set a trap for you and you also were caught, O Babylon, And you did not know it; You have been found and also seized Because you have struggled against the Lord.”

- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 21-32Verses 21-32 The forces are mustered and empowered to destroy Babylon. Let them do what God demands, and they shall bring to pass what he threatens. The pride of men's hearts sets God against them, and ripens them apace for ruin. Babylon's pride must be her ruin; she has been proud against the Holy One of Israel; who can keep those up whom God will throw down?Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 1-46After the predictions of judgment to be inflicted on other nations by Babylon, follows this one against Babylon itself, the longest prophecy, consisting of one hundred verses.
