Hosea 9:10
10The Lord says, ‘When I first found Israel, they gave me pleasure. It was as if I had found grapes in the wilderness. Your ancestors made me happy, like the first fruit on a young fig tree. But then they came to the god, Baal-Peor. They began to worship that disgusting idol. They became as disgusting as the idol that they loved so much.

Context of Hosea 9:10
8God has sent his prophet to warn the people of Ephraim. But wherever he goes, people try to stop him. They speak angry words against him, even in the temple of his God. 9The Israelites do very wicked things, like the terrible sins that they did at Gibeah. God will not forget the wicked things that they have done. He will surely punish them for their sins. The Lord says, ‘When I first found Israel, they gave me pleasure. It was as if I had found grapes in the wilderness. Your ancestors made me happy, like the first fruit on a young fig tree. But then they came to the god, Baal-Peor. They began to worship that disgusting idol. They became as disgusting as the idol that they loved so much. 11The great things that Israel enjoys will soon disappear. They will be like birds that fly away! The women of Israel will no longer give birth to children. They will not even become pregnant. 12But even if they do have children, I will cause them all to die so that none are still alive. It will be a terrible time for the Israelites, because I will turn away from them.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 10I found Israel like grapes in the wilderness - While they were faithful, they were as acceptable to me as ripe grapes would be to a thirsty traveler in the desert. - Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 10I found Israel like grapes in the wilderness - God is not said to find anything, as though “He” had lost it, or knew not where it was, or came suddenly upon it, not expecting it. “They” were lost, as relates to Him, when they were found by Him. As our Lord says of the returned prodigal, “This my son was lost and is found” Luke 15:32. He “found” them and made them pleasant in His own sight, “as grapes which a man finds unexpectedly, in “a great terrible…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 7-10Verses 7-10 Time had been when the spiritual watchmen of Israel were with the Lord, but now they were like the snare of a fowler to entangle persons to their ruin. The people were become as corrupt as those of Gibeah, Judg. 19; and their crimes should be visited in like manner. At first God had found Israel pleasing to Him, as grapes to the traveller in the wilderness. He saw them with pleasure as the first ripe figs. This shows the delight God took in…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 10I found Israel: Hosea, like Ezekiel (Ezekiel 16), describes the Lord finding and adopting pure, innocent Israel in the desert. But Israel soon left God for idols at Baal-peor (Numbers 25:1–4). Worshiping idols made the Israelites detestable. This strong word can also mean abomination (Deuteronomy 29:17; Jeremiah 7:30). They inevitably became like what they worshiped.Read the comment
