Context of Acts 19:5
3So Paul asked them, ‘When someone baptized you, what kind of baptism was that?’ ‘We received the baptism that John spoke about,’ they answered. 4Then Paul said, ‘John baptized people who knew that they had done wrong things. They wanted to stop doing these things. But John also said to the people, “You must believe in the man who will come soon.” This person is Jesus.’ When the believers in Ephesus understood this, Paul baptized them. This showed that they now believed in the Lord Jesus. 6Then Paul put his hands on each believer's head. When he did this, the Holy Spirit came down on them. They spoke in different languages and they spoke messages from God. 7There were about 12 men there.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 5When they heard this, etc. - As there is no evidence in the New Testament of persons being rebaptized, unless this be one, many criticisms have been hazarded to prove that these persons were not rebaptized. I see no need of this. To be a Christian, a man must be baptized in the Christian faith: these persons had not been baptized into that faith, and therefore were not Christians: they felt this, and were immediately baptized into the name of the Lord…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 5When they heard this - When they heard what Paul had said respecting the nature of John‘s baptism. They were baptized - As there is no other instance in the New Testament of any persons having been rebaptized, it has been made a question by some critics whether it was done here; and they have supposed that all this is the narrative of Luke respecting what took place under the ministry of John: to wit, that he told them to believe on Christ Jesus, and…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 1-7Paul traveled to Ephesus after Apollos had left. Later, Apollos returned to Ephesus while Paul was still there (1 Corinthians 16:12). They did not receive the Holy Spirit when they believed the good news about Jesus. They had accepted John's baptism, which called for…Read the comment
