Context of 2 Kings 22:4
2Josiah did things that the Lord said were right. He lived in the good ways of his ancestor, King David. He did not turn away from the Lord's teaching in any way. 3When Josiah had been king for 18 years, he sent Shaphan to the Lord's temple. Shaphan was the son of Azaliah, and the grandson of Meshullam. He was the king's secretary. Josiah told Shaphan, ‘Go to meet Hilkiah, the leader of the priests. Ask him to count the money that people have brought as gifts into the Lord's temple. Those are the offerings that the temple guards have received from people. 5The priests must give the money to the men who have authority over the work on the Lord's temple. Those leaders must pay the men who are doing the repairs. 6Those workers are the carpenters, the builders and the men who work with stones. The leaders of the work must also buy wood. And they must buy stones that are ready to use. They need those things to repair the temple.

Commentaries on 2 Kings 22:4
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 4That he may sum the silver - As Josiah began to seek the Lord as soon as he began to reign, we may naturally conclude that the worship of God that was neglected and suppressed by his father, was immediately restored; and the people began their accustomed offerings to the temple. Ten years therefore had elapsed since these offerings began; no one had, as yet, taken account of them; nor were they applied to the use for which they were given, viz., the…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 4Hilkiah - Hilkiah was the father (or grandfather) of Seraiah (compare 1 Chronicles 6:13-14, with Nehemiah 11:11), high priest at the time of the captivity 2 Kings 25:18. and ancestor of Ezra the scribe Ezra 7:1. It is evident from the expressions of this verse that a collection for the repairs of the temple, similar to that established in the reign of Joash 2 Kings 12:9-10, had been for some considerable time in progress (compare 2 Chronicles 34:3), and…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 3-4By the eighteenth year of his reign, which was in 621 BC, Josiah had followed the Lord for ten years (see 2 Chronicles 34:3–7). Hilkiah, the high priest, came from Zadok's family line (1 Chronicles 9:10–11). Some scholars think this Hilkiah was Jeremiah’s father (Jeremiah 1:1). The money was collected in a large chest placed where people could easily access it as they entered the temple (compare 2 Kings 12:9).Read the comment
