Context of 2 Kings 22:3
1Josiah was eight years old when he became king. He ruled as king in Jerusalem for 31 years. His mother's name was Jedidah. She was the daughter of Adaiah, who came from Bozkath. 2Josiah did things that the Lord said were right. He lived in the good ways of his ancestor, King David. He did not turn away from the Lord's teaching in any way. When Josiah had been king for 18 years, he sent Shaphan to the Lord's temple. Shaphan was the son of Azaliah, and the grandson of Meshullam. He was the king's secretary. Josiah told Shaphan, 4‘Go to meet Hilkiah, the leader of the priests. Ask him to count the money that people have brought as gifts into the Lord's temple. Those are the offerings that the temple guards have received from people. 5The priests must give the money to the men who have authority over the work on the Lord's temple. Those leaders must pay the men who are doing the repairs.

Commentaries on 2 Kings 22:3
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 3In the eighteenth year - This is the date of the finding of the Book of the Law and of the Passover (marginal reference, and 2 Kings 23:23), but is not meant to apply to all the various reforms of Josiah as related in 2 Chronicles 34:3-8; 2 Chronicles 35:1. From these places it appear that at least the greater part of his reforms preceded the finding of the Book of the Law. He began them in the 12th year of his reign, at the age of 20, and had…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 3-4By the eighteenth year of his reign, which was in 621 BC, Josiah had followed the Lord for ten years (see 2 Chronicles 34:3–7). Hilkiah, the high priest, came from Zadok's family line (1 Chronicles 9:10–11). Some scholars think this Hilkiah was Jeremiah’s father (Jeremiah 1:1). The money was collected in a large chest placed where people could easily access it as they entered the temple (compare 2 Kings 12:9).Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 3-43-4. in the eighteenth year of king Josiah--Previous to this period, he had commenced the work of national reformation. The preliminary steps had been already taken; not only the builders were employed, but money had been brought by all the people and received by the Levites at the door, and various other preparations had been made. But the course of this narrative turns on one interesting incident which happened in the eighteenth year of Josiah's reign…Read the comment
