Context of 1 Timothy 2:6
4He wants to save all people. He wants everyone to know his message about what is true. 5There is only one God. There is also only one person who brings God and people together. That person is Christ Jesus, who became a man himself. He died as a sacrifice on behalf of all people, to pay the debt of their sins. He died at the proper time for God to show his purpose clearly. 7God chose me as his apostle, to tell this same message to people. I am telling you what is true. I am not telling lies! Yes, he sent me to teach his true message to the Gentiles, so that they would believe in him. 8So then, in every place where you meet together, I want the men to pray. The men who lift up their hands and pray must be those who live good lives. They must not be people who are angry or who quarrel with others.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 6Who gave himself a ransom - The word signifies a ransom paid for the redemption of a captive; and , the word used here, and applied to the death of Christ, signifies that ransom which consists in the exchange of one person for another, or the redemption of life by life; or, as Schleusner has expressed it in his translation of these words, Qui morte sua omnes liberavit a vitiositatis vi et poenis, a servitute quassi et miseria peccatorum. - Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 6Who gave himself a ransom for all - This also is stated as a reason why prayer should be offered for all, and a proof that God desires the salvation of all. The argument is, that as Christ died for all, it is proper to pray for all, and that the fact that he died for all is proof that God desired the salvation of all. Whatever proof of his desire for their salvation can be derived from this in relation to any of the race, is proof in relation to all. On…Read the comment

They might have adapted these teachings from creeds, hymns, or prayers familiar to the churches. The teachings probably relate to Paul's trouble with false teachers. The false teachers' teachings weakened the universal message of the good news about Jesus and the mission to non-Jews (Gentiles). The false…Read the comment
