Context of 1 Kings 22:46
44Jehoshaphat agreed not to fight against the king of Israel. 45The other things that happened while Jehoshaphat was king are written in a book. The book is called ‘The history of Judah's kings’. It tells about the great things that he did and the battles that he fought. He also removed the male prostitutes who lived near the special altars. His father Asa had removed many of them when he ruled as king. Jehoshaphat removed those who were still there. 47At this time there was no king who ruled Edom. Their ruler was an officer that King Jehoshaphat had chosen. 48Jehoshaphat built some big ships to bring back gold from Ophir. But they never left Ezion-Geber because a storm destroyed them. So they never travelled anywhere.

They liked to have sex in other ways that are not right. God destroyed their cities. He has punished them with fire that never stops burning. That is an example of what will happen to wicked people like them.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 46The remnant of the sodomites - הקדש of the consecrated persons; or it may rather apply here to the system of pollution, effeminacy, and debauch. He destroyed the thing itself; the abominations of Priapus, and the rites of Venus, Baal, and Ashtaroth. No more of that impure worship was to be found in Judea.Read the comment

- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 46Jehoshaphat deserves credit for getting rid of religious prostitutes. His father, Asa, had banned them (1 Kings 15:12), but they still existed. These prostitutes were likely based at pagan shrines that Asa did not remove (1 Kings 15:14).Read the comment
