Context of 1 Kings 13:33
31When they had buried the man, the old prophet said to his sons, ‘When I die, bury me in the same grave where we buried the servant of God. Put my bones there, beside his bones. 32The Lord's message that he spoke will certainly become true. He spoke against the altar in Bethel and against all the altars on the hills of Samaria's towns.’ Even after this happened, Jeroboam did not stop doing evil things. He chose ordinary people to be priests for the altars on the hills. If somebody wanted to become a priest, Jeroboam agreed to make him a priest. 34This sin caused Jeroboam's family to disappear from the earth. He would no longer have descendants to rule the kingdom.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 33Jeroboam returned not from his evil way - There is something exceedingly obstinate and perverse, as well as blinding and infatuating, in idolatry. The prediction lately delivered at Beth-el, and the miracles wrought in confirmation of it, were surely sufficient to have affected and alarmed any heart, not wholly and incorrigibly hardened; and yet they had no effect on Jeroboam! Made - the lowest of the people priests - So hardy was this bad man in his…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 33Whosoever would, he consecrated him - i. e., he exercised no discretion, but allowed anyone to become a priest, without regard to birth, character, or social position. We may suspect from this that the office was not greatly sought, since no civil governor who cared to set up a priesthood would wish to degrade it in public estimation. Jeroboam did impose one limitation, which would have excluded the very poorest class. The candidate for consecration was…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 23-34Verses 23-34 God is displeased at the sins of his own people; and no man shall be protected in disobedience, by his office, his nearness to God, or any services he has done for him. God warns all whom he employs, strictly to observe their orders. We cannot judge of men by their sufferings, nor of sins by present punishments; with some, the flesh is destroyed, that the spirit may be saved; with others, the flesh is pampered, that the soul may ripen for…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 33-34Jeroboam knew what happened to the man of God, but it did not change his beliefs. His continued false religion, despite God's warnings, led to the downfall of his family line (1 Kings 14:7–11, 15–16; 15:27–30). Later Israelite kings followed his sinful ways, which eventually caused the northern kingdom to collapse (2 Kings 17:20–23).Read the comment
