Context of 1 Kings 13:32
30He put the body in the grave that he had prepared for himself. He and his sons were very upset, and they said, ‘Oh! My brother!’ 31When they had buried the man, the old prophet said to his sons, ‘When I die, bury me in the same grave where we buried the servant of God. Put my bones there, beside his bones. The Lord's message that he spoke will certainly become true. He spoke against the altar in Bethel and against all the altars on the hills of Samaria's towns.’ 33Even after this happened, Jeroboam did not stop doing evil things. He chose ordinary people to be priests for the altars on the hills. If somebody wanted to become a priest, Jeroboam agreed to make him a priest. 34This sin caused Jeroboam's family to disappear from the earth. He would no longer have descendants to rule the kingdom.

Commentaries on 1 Kings 13:32
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 32In the cities of Samaria - It is most certain that Samaria, or as it is called in Hebrew Shomeron, was not built at this time. We are expressly told that Omri, king of Israel, founded this city on the hill which he bought for two talents of silver, from a person of the name of Shemer, after whom he called the city Samaria or Shomeron; (see 1 Kings 16:24;); and this was fifty years after the death of Jeroboam. How then could the old prophet speak of…Read the comment

There were many lesser high places in the land, several of which would be likely to be in Israel 1 Kings 3:4. In the cities of Samaria - The word Samaria cannot have been employed by the old prophet, in whose days Samaria did not exist 1 Kings 16:24. The writer of Kings has substituted for the term used by him that whereby the country was known in his own…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 23-34Verses 23-34 God is displeased at the sins of his own people; and no man shall be protected in disobedience, by his office, his nearness to God, or any services he has done for him. God warns all whom he employs, strictly to observe their orders. We cannot judge of men by their sufferings, nor of sins by present punishments; with some, the flesh is destroyed, that the spirit may be saved; with others, the flesh is pampered, that the soul may ripen for…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 32the message … will surely come to pass: The Lord's quick judgment convinced the old prophet that the prediction made by the man of God against Jeroboam's altar would happen. The prophecy was fulfilled years later during Josiah's reforms (2 Kings 23:15–18). Samaria became the capital city of Israel during Omri's reign, the first king of Israel's third dynasty (1 Kings 16:24, 29–33). The name Samaria sometimes refers to the capital city and sometimes to the…Read the comment
