Context of 1 Kings 13:34
32The Lord's message that he spoke will certainly become true. He spoke against the altar in Bethel and against all the altars on the hills of Samaria's towns.’ 33Even after this happened, Jeroboam did not stop doing evil things. He chose ordinary people to be priests for the altars on the hills. If somebody wanted to become a priest, Jeroboam agreed to make him a priest. This sin caused Jeroboam's family to disappear from the earth. He would no longer have descendants to rule the kingdom.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 34And this thing became sin - These abominations were too glaring, and too insulting to the Divine Majesty, to be permitted to last; therefore his house was cut off, and destroyed from the face of the earth. A Holy priesthood, a righteous ministry, is a blessing to any state, because it has a most powerful effect on the morals of the community; inducing order, sobriety, and habits of industry, among the people: on the contrary, the profligacy of the clergy…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 34This persistence in wrong, after the warning given him, brought a judgment, not only on Jeroboam himself, but on his family. Jeroboam‘s departure from the path of right forfeited the crown 1 Kings 11:38; and in that forfeiture was involved naturally the destruction of his family, for in the East, as already observed, when one dynasty supplants another, the ordinary practice is for the new king to destroy all the males belonging to the house of his…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 23-34Verses 23-34 God is displeased at the sins of his own people; and no man shall be protected in disobedience, by his office, his nearness to God, or any services he has done for him. God warns all whom he employs, strictly to observe their orders. We cannot judge of men by their sufferings, nor of sins by present punishments; with some, the flesh is destroyed, that the spirit may be saved; with others, the flesh is pampered, that the soul may ripen for…Read the comment

His continued false religion, despite God's warnings, led to the downfall of his family line (1 Kings 14:7–11, 15–16; 15:27–30). Later Israelite kings followed his sinful ways, which eventually caused the northern kingdom to collapse (2 Kings 17:20–23).Read the comment
