Context of Luke 9:26
24for whosoever shall desire to save his life shall lose it, but whosoever shall lose his life for my sake, he shall save it. 25For what shall a man profit if he shall have gained the whole world, and have destroyed, or come under the penalty of the loss of himself? For whosoever shall have been ashamed of me and of my words, of him will the Son of man be ashamed when he shall come in his glory, and [in that] of the Father, and of the holy angels. 27But I say unto you of a truth, There are some of those standing here who shall not taste death until they shall have seen the kingdom of God. 28And it came to pass after these words, about eight days, that taking Peter and John and James he went up into a mountain to pray.

- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 18-27Verses 18-27 It is an unspeakable comfort that our Lord Jesus is God's Anointed; this signifies that he was both appointed to be the Messiah, and qualified for it. Jesus discourses concerning his own sufferings and death. And so far must his disciples be from thinking how to prevent his sufferings, that they must prepare for their own. We often meet with crosses in the way of duty; and though we must not pull them upon our own heads, yet, when they are…Read the comment

- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 2626. ashamed of me, and of my words--The sense of shame is one of the strongest in our nature, one of the social affections founded on our love of reputation, which causes instinctive aversion to what is fitted to lower it, and was given us as a preservative from all that is properly shameful. When one is, in this sense of it, lost to shame, he is nearly past hope (Zec 3:5; Jr 6:15; 3:3). But when Christ and "His words"--Christianity, especially in its…Read the comment
