Context of John 13:19
17If ye know these things, blessed are ye if ye do them. 18I speak not of you all. I know those whom I have chosen; but that the scripture might be fulfilled, He that eats bread with me has lifted up his heel against me. I tell you [it] now before it happens, that when it happens, ye may believe that I am [he]. 20Verily, verily, I say to you, He who receives whomsoever I shall send receives me; and he that receives me receives him who has sent me. 21Having said these things, Jesus was troubled in spirit, and testified and said, Verily, verily, I say to you, that one of you shall deliver me up.

Commentaries on John 13:19
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 19That - ye may believe - These frequent predictions of his death, so circumstantial in themselves, had the most direct tendency to confirm the disciples, not only in the belief of his being the Messiah, but also in that of his omniscience.Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 19Now I tell you before it come - They would see by that that he had a knowledge of the heart and the power of foretelling future events, and must therefore have been sent by God. This does not imply that they had no faith before this, but that their faith would be increased and strengthened by it.Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 18-30Verses 18-30 Our Lord had often spoken of his own sufferings and death, without such trouble of spirit as he now discovered when he spake of Judas. The sins of Christians are the grief of Christ. We are not to confine our attention to Judas. The prophecy of his treachery may apply to all who partake of God's mercies, and meet them with ingratitude. See the infidel, who only looks at the Scriptures with a desire to do away their authority and destroy their…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 19Judas’s betrayal did not surprise Jesus. It should also not surprise his disciples when it happens. that I am He: By using the phrase I am, Jesus clearly identified himself with the God of the Old Testament. See Exodus 3:14.Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 18-1918-19. I speak not of you all--the "happy are ye," of Joh 13:17, being on no supposition applicable to Judas. I know whom I have chosen--in the higher sense. But that the scripture may be fulfilled--that is, one has been added to your number, by no accident or mistake, who is none of Mine, but just that he might fulfil his predicted destiny. He that eateth bread with me--"did eat of my bread" (Psa 41:9), as one of My family; admitted to the nearest…Read the comment
