Context of Acts 20:5
3And having spent three months [there], a treacherous plot against him having been set on foot by the Jews, as he was going to sail to Syria, [the] resolution was adopted of returning through Macedonia. 4And there accompanied him as far as Asia, Sopater [son] of Pyrrhus, a Berean; and of Thessalonians, Aristarchus and Secundus, and Gaius and Timotheus of Derbe, and of Asia, Tychicus and Trophimus. These going before waited for us in Troas; 6but we sailed away from Philippi after the days of unleavened bread, and we came to them to Troas in five days, where we spent seven days. 7And the first day of the week, we being assembled to break bread, Paul discoursed to them, about to depart on the morrow. And he prolonged the discourse till midnight.

- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 5These going before - Going before Paul and Luke. Dr. Doddridge supposes that only Tychicus and Trophimus went before the others. Perhaps the Greek most naturally demands this interpretation. Tarried for us - The word “us,” here, shows that Luke had again joined Paul as his companion. In Acts 16:12 it appears that Luke was in Philippi, in the house of Lydia. Why he remained there, or why he did not attend Paul in his journey to Athens, Corinth, Ephesus…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 5-15This is another of the “we” passages in Acts (sections where Luke includes himself in the story; see study note on 16:10). Luke likely joined Paul again at Philippi, where he had stayed some years earlier. He then traveled with Paul to Jerusalem (21:1–18).Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 4-54-5. there accompanied him into Asia--the province of Asia. Sopater of Berea--The true reading, beyond doubt, is, "Sopater [the son] of Pyrrhus of Berea." Some think this mention of his father was to distinguish him from Sosipater (the same name in fuller form), mentioned in Ro 16:21. But that they were the same person seems more probable. of the Thessalonians, Aristarchus--(See on Ac 19:29). and Secundus--of whom nothing else is known. Gaius of…Read the comment
