Context of Isaiah 32:13
11Shudder, you complacent ones; tremble, you overconfident ones! Strip yourselves bare and put sackcloth around your waists. 12Beat your breasts in mourning for the delightful fields and the fruitful vines, for the ground of my people growing thorns and briers, indeed, for every joyous house in the jubilant city. 14For the palace will be deserted, the busy city abandoned. The hill and the watchtower will become barren places forever, the joy of wild donkeys, and a pasture for flocks, 15until the Spirit from on high is poured out on us. Then the desert will become an orchard, and the orchard will seem like a forest.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 13Shall come up thorns and briers "The thorn and the brier shall come up" - All the ancient Versions read ושמיר veshamir, with the conjunction. And an ancient MS. has בו תעלה taaleh bo, "shall come up in it, "which seems to be right; or rather בה bah : and there is a rasure in the place of בו bo in another ancient MS. Yea, upon all the houses of joy - For כי ki, the ancient Versions, except the Vulgate, seem to have read ו ve . כי ki may perhaps be a…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 13Upon the land of my people - A description similar to this, in regard to the consequences of the invasion of Sennacherib, is given in Isaiah 7:20-25 (see the notes at that passage). Yea, upon all the houses of joy - Margin, Burning upon.‘ The marginal readling has originated from the supposition that the word כי kı̂y is derived from כיה kâvâh “to be burned.” This conjecture has been adopted by Junius and Tremellius, and by some others. But it is…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 9-20Verses 9-20 When there was so much provocation given to the holy God, bad times might be expected. Alas! how many careless ones there are, who support self-indulgence by shameful niggardliness! We deserve to be deprived of the supports of life, when we make them the food of lusts. Let such tremble and be troubled. Blessed times shall be brought in by the pouring out of the Spirit from on high; then, and not till then, there will be good times. The present…Read the comment

- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 9-209-20. Address to the women of Jerusalem who troubled themselves little about the political signs of the times, but lived a life of self-indulgence (Is 3:16-23); the failure of food through the devastations of the enemy is here foretold, being what was most likely to affect them as mothers of families, heretofore accustomed to every luxury. Vitringa understands "women--daughters" as the cities and villages of Judea (Eze 16:1-63). See Am 6:1.Read the comment
