Context of Acts 18:1
After this, Paul left Athens and went to Corinth. 2There he found a Jew named Aquila, a native of Pontus, who had recently come from Italy with his wife Priscilla because Claudius had ordered all the Jews to leave Rome. Paul went to visit them, 3and he stayed and worked with them because they were tentmakers by trade, just as he was.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 1Paul departed from Athens - How long he stayed here, we cannot tell; it is probable it could not be less than three months; but, finding that the Gospel made little progress among the Athenians, he resolved to go to Corinth. Corinth was situated on the isthmus that connects Peloponnesus to Attica; and was the capital of all Achaia, or Peloponnesus. It was most advantageously situated for trade; for, by its two ports, the Lecheum and Cenchreae, it…Read the comment

The city itself stood on a little island; it had two ports, Lecheeum on the west, and Cenchrea on the east. It was one of the most populous and wealthy cities of Greece, and at the same time one of the most luxurious…Read the comment

- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 1In Roman times, political power in Achaia was centered in Corinth, an important city-state and a major center for trade. Corinth became known for widespread prostitution, sexual immorality (wrong sexual behavior), and drunkenness (see 1 Corinthians Book Introduction, “Setting”). Paul spent a great deal of time and effort building a Christian community there (see study note on Acts 16:8).Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 1-221-4. came to Corinth--rebuilt by Julius Cæsar on the isthmus between the Ægean and Ionian Seas; the capital of the Roman province of Achaia, and the residence of the proconsul; a large and populous mercantile city, and the center of commerce alike for East and West; having a considerable Jewish population, larger, probably, at this time than usual, owing to the banishment of the Jews from Rome by Claudius Cæsar (Ac 18:2).
