Context of Matthew 8:31

29And behold, they cried out, saying, What have we to do with thee, thou Son of God? art thou come hither to torment us before the time? 30Now there was afar off from them a herd of many swine feeding. And the demons besought him, saying, If thou cast us out, send us away into the herd of swine. 32And he said unto them, Go. And they came out, and went into the swine: and behold, the whole herd rushed down the steep into the sea, and perished in the waters. 33And they that fed them fled, and went away into the city, and told everything, and what was befallen to them that were possessed with demons.

Commentaries on Matthew 8:31

• Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 31Suffer us to go away - : this is the common reading; but , send us away, appears more likely to be genuine. This latter reading Griesbach has adopted, on the authority of three ancient MSS., the Coptic, Sahidic, Ethiopic, Syriac, all the Arabic, Saxon, most of the Itala, and the Vulgate. Send us away seems to express more fully the absolute power Jesus Christ had over them - permission alone was not sufficient; the very power by which they were to go…Read the comment
• Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 28-34Verses 28-34 The same account of the demoniacs substantially is found in Luke 8:26-38. Matthew 8:28 The other side - The other side of the Sea of Tiberias. Country of the Gergesenes - Mark Mark 5:1 says that he came into the country of the “Gadarenes.” This difference is only apparent. “Gadara” was a city not far from the Lake Gennesareth, one of the ten cities that were called “Decapolis.” See the notes at Matthew 4:25. “Gergesa” was a city about 12…Read the comment
• Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 28-34Verses 28-34 The devils have nothing to do with Christ as a Saviour; they neither have, nor hope for any benefit from him. Oh the depth of this mystery of Divine love; that fallen man has so much to do with Christ, when fallen angels have nothing to do with him! He 2:16. Surely here was torment, to be forced to own the excellence that is in Christ, and yet they had no part in him. The devils desire not to have any thing to do with Christ as a Ruler.
