Context of Luke 6:5
3And Jesus answering them said, Have ye not read even this, what David did, when he was hungry, he, and they that were with him; 4how he entered into the house of God, and took and ate the showbread, and gave also to them that were with him; which it is not lawful to eat save for the priests alone? And he said unto them, The Son of man is lord of the sabbath. 6And it came to pass on another sabbath, that he entered into the synagogue and taught: and there was a man there, and his right hand was withered. 7And the scribes and the Pharisees watched him, whether he would heal on the sabbath; that they might find how to accuse him.

Commentaries on Luke 6:5
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 5Lord of the Sabbath: The saying is a play on words with a double meaning: Son of man often means "human being." So Jesus was affirming that the Sabbath day was made to serve human beings. Son of Man was also a title for the Christ (God's chosen king; see Daniel 7:13–14). Jesus is Lord of the Sabbath because he created it.Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 55. Lord also--rather "even" (as in Mt 12:8). of the sabbath--as naked a claim to all the authority of Him who gave the law at Mount Sinai as could possibly be made; that is, "I have said enough to vindicate the men ye carp at on My account: but in this place is the Lord of the law, and they have His sanction."
