Context of 1 Peter 4:11
9using hospitality one to another without murmuring: 10according as each hath received a gift, ministering it among yourselves, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God; if any man speaketh, speaking as it were oracles of God; if any man ministereth, ministering as of the strength which God supplieth: that in all things God may be glorified through Jesus Christ, whose is the glory and the dominion for ever and ever. Amen. 12Beloved, think it not strange concerning the fiery trial among you, which cometh upon you to prove you, as though a strange thing happened unto you: 13but insomuch as ye are partakers of Christ’s sufferings, rejoice; that at the revelation of his glory also ye may rejoice with exceeding joy.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 11If any man speak - In order to explain or enforce God's word, and edify his neighbor, let him do it as those did to whom the living oracles were committed: they spoke as they were inspired by the Holy Ghost. Those, therefore, at Pontus, etc., who undertook to teach others, should speak by the same influence; or, if not under this immediate influence, should speak as or according to the oracles already delivered, grounding all their exhortations and…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 11If any man speak - As a preacher, referring here particularly to the office of the ministry. Let him speak as the oracles of God - As the oracles of God speak; to wit, in accordance with the truth which God has revealed, and with an impressive sense of the responsibility of delivering a message from him. The word rendered “oracles” ( ́ logia) means, properly, something “spoken” or “uttered”; then anything uttered by God - a divine communication - a…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 7-11Verses 7-11 The destruction of the Jewish church and nation, foretold by our Saviour, was very near. And the speedy approach of death and judgment concerns all, to which these words naturally lead our minds. Our approaching end, is a powerful argument to make us sober in all worldly matters, and earnest in religion. There are so many things amiss in all, that unless love covers, excuses, and forgives in others, the mistakes and faults for which every one…Read the comment

Amen: This doxology (a short hymn of praise) has led some people to think that one original letter of Peter ended here and that another letter was later added to it. Doxologies in the New Testament do appear at the end of letters (Romans 16:25–27; Philippians 4:20; Hebrews 13:21; 2 Peter 3:18; Jude 1:24–25). Doxologies also appear at the…Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 1111. If any ... speak--namely, as a prophet, or divinely taught teacher in the Church assembly. as the, &c.--The Greek has no article: "as oracles of God." This may be due to Greek: "God," having no article, it being a principle when a governed noun omits the Greek article that the governing noun should omit it, too. In Ac 7:38 also, the Greek article is wanting; thus English Version, "as the oracles of God," namely, the Old Testament, would be "right,"…Read the comment
