Context of Titus 3:13

11well aware that such a person is twisted and is sinning; he is convicted and self-condemned [and is gratified by causing confusion among believers]. 12When I send Artemas or [perhaps] Tychicus to you, make every effort to come to me at Nicopolis, for I have decided to spend the winter there. Do your best to help Zenas the lawyer and Apollos on their way; see that they are supplied and lack nothing. 14Our people must learn to do good deeds to meet necessary demands [whatever the occasion may require], so that they will not be unproductive. 15All who are with me greet you. Greet those who love us in the faith. Grace be with all of you.

Commentaries on Titus 3:13

• Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 13Bring Zenas the lawyer - This person is only mentioned in this place; whether he was a Jewish, Roman, or Greek lawyer, we cannot tell. And Apollos - Of this person we have some valuable particulars in Acts 18:24; 1 Corinthians 1:12; 1 Corinthians 3:5, 1 Corinthians 3:6; 1 Corinthians 4:6. Either St. Paul had left these at Crete when he visited that island, or he had heard that, in their evangelical itinerancy, they were about to pass through it. On their…Read the comment
• Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 13Bring Zenas the lawyer - - This person is not elsewhere mentioned in the New Testament, and nothing more is known of him. He belonged doubtless to that class of persons so often mentioned in the New Testament as lawyers; that is, who were regarded as qualified to expound the Jewish laws; see the notes at Matthew 22:35. It does not mean that he practiced law, in the modern sense of that phrase. He had doubtless been converted to the Christian faith, and it…Read the comment
• Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 12-15Verses 12-15 Christianity is not a fruitless profession; and its professors must be filled with the fruits of righteousness, which are by Jesus Christ, to the glory and praise of God. They must be doing good, as well as keeping away from evil. Let "ours" follow some honest labour and employment, to provide for themselves and their families. Christianity obliges all to seek some honest work and calling, and therein to abide with God. The apostle concludes…Read the comment
• Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 13Zenas and Apollos were involved in spreading the good news about Jesus, and they might have been the ones who delivered this letter to Titus. Zenas was probably an expert in Roman law or a Roman jurist (the same word for lawyer is in Luke 7:30; 10:25). His Greek name (which means “gift of Zeus”) makes it unlikely that he was an expert in Jewish law. Apollos is presumably the same man as in Acts 18:24; 19:1; 1 Corinthians 1:12; 3:4–6, 22; 4:6; 16:12…Read the comment
• Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 1313. Bring ... on their journey--Enable them to proceed forward by supplying necessaries for their journey. Zenas--the contracted form of Zenodorus. lawyer--a Jewish "scribe," who, when converted, still retained the title from his former occupation. A civil lawyer. Apollos--with Zenas, probably the bearers of this Epistle. In 1Co 16:12, Apollos is mentioned as purposing to visit Corinth; his now being at Corinth (on the theory of Paul being at Corinth when…Read the comment
