Context of Titus 1:2
1Paul, a bond-servant of God and an apostle (special messenger, personally chosen representative) of Jesus Christ, for the faith of God’s chosen ones and [to lead and encourage them to recognize and pursue] the knowledge of the truth which leads to godliness, based on the hope and divine guarantee of eternal life, [the life] which God, who is ever truthful and without deceit, promised before the ages of time began, 3and at the appointed time has made known His word and revealed it as His message, through preaching, which was entrusted to me according to the command of God our Savior— 4To Titus, my true child in a common faith: Grace and peace [inner calm and spiritual well-being] from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Savior.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 2In hope of eternal life - In expectation of a state of being and well being which should last through eternity, when time should be no more. This includes, not only the salvation of the soul and its eternal beatification, but also the resurrection of the body. This was a point but ill understood, and not very clearly revealed, under the Mosaic law; but it was fully revealed under the Gospel, and the doctrine illustrated by the resurrection and ascension…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 2In hope of eternal life - Margin, for. Greek, ̓ ̓ ̓́ ep' elpidiThis does not mean that Paul cherished the hope of eternal life, but that the “faith of the elect,” which he aimed to secure, was in order that people might have the hope of eternal life. The whole system which he was appointed to preach was designed to secure to man a well-founded hope of salvation; compare the notes, 2 Timothy 1:10. Which God, that cannot lie - On the phrase” cannot lie,”…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 2Believing that they have eternal life enables God’s people to live well now (see 2:11–14; 3:7–8). God, who cannot lie: The true God contrasts with popular Cretan ideas (see study note on 1:12). This statement also emphasizes God’s plan of salvation as unchanging (1:1): God can be trusted to fulfill his promises (see Numbers 23:19; 1 Samuel 15:29; Romans 3:3–4).Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 22. In hope of eternal life--connected with the whole preceding sentence. That whereon rests my aim as an apostle to promote the elect's faith and full knowledge of the truth, is, "the hope of eternal life" (Tit 2:13; 3:7; Ac 23:6; 24:15; 28:20). that cannot lie--(Ro 3:4; 11:29; He 6:18). promised before the world began--a contracted expression for "purposed before the world began (literally, 'before the ages of time'), and promised actually in time," the…Read the comment
