Context of Mark 11:21
19When evening came, Jesus and His disciples would leave the city. 20In the morning, as they were passing by, the disciples saw that the fig tree had withered away from the roots up. And remembering, Peter said to Him, “Rabbi (Master), look! The fig tree which You cursed has withered!” 22Jesus replied, “Have faith in God [constantly]. 23I assure you and most solemnly say to you, whoever says to this mountain, ‘Be lifted up and thrown into the sea!’ and does not doubt in his heart [in God’s unlimited power], but believes that what he says is going to take place, it will be done for him [in accordance with God’s will].

- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 11-26Verses 11-26 See this passage explained in the notes at Matthew 21:18-22. Mark 11:11 Into the temple - Not into the edifice properly called “the temple,” but into the “courts” which surrounded the principal edifice. Our Saviour, not being of the tribe of Levi, was not permitted to enter into the holy or most holy place; and when, therefore, it is said that he went into the “temple,” it is always to be understood of the “courts” surrounding the temple. - Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 19-26Verses 19-26 The disciples could not think why that fig-tree should so soon wither away; but all wither who reject Christ; it represented the state of the Jewish church. We should rest in no religion that does not make us fruitful in good works. Christ taught them from hence to pray in faith. It may be applied to that mighty faith with which all true Christians are endued, and which does wonders in spiritual things. It justifies us, and so removes…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 20-21The power of Jesus to judge the fig tree showed his authority to bring the judgment on Jerusalem that he had already foretold. If the first people hearing Mark’s Gospel received it in the late AD 60s, they would have known that Roman armies were already carrying out this prophetic judgment against Jerusalem.Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 2121. And Peter calling to remembrance saith unto him--satisfied that a miracle so very peculiar--a miracle, not of blessing, as all His other miracles, but of cursing--could not have been wrought but with some higher reference, and fully expecting to hear something weighty on the subject. Master, behold, the fig tree which thou cursedst is withered away--so connecting the two things as to show that he traced the death of the tree entirely to the curse of…Read the comment
