Context of Hosea 5:8
6They will go with their flocks and with their herds To seek the Lord [diligently searching for Him], but they will not find Him; He has withdrawn from them [refusing to hear the prayers of the unrepentant]. 7They have dealt treacherously against the Lord, For they have borne illegitimate (pagan) children. Now the New Moon will devour them along with their land [bringing judgment and captivity]. Blow the horn in Gibeah, The trumpet in Ramah [the lofty hills on Benjamin’s northern border]. Sound the alarm at Beth-aven: “Behind you and coming after you [is the enemy], O Benjamin [be on guard]!” 9Ephraim will become a desolation in the day of rebuke; Among the tribes of Israel I declare what is certain. 10The princes of Judah are like those who move a boundary marker; I will pour out My wrath on them like [an unrestrained flood of] water.

- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 8Blow ye the cornet in Gibeah - The evil day and destruction, denounced, is now vividly pictured, as actually come. All is in confusion, hurry, alarm, because the enemy was in the midst of them. The “cornet,” an instrument made of horn, was to be blown as the alarm, when the enemy was at hand. The “trumpet” was especially used for the worship of God. “Gibeah and Ramah” were cities of Benjamin, on the borders of Ephraim, where the enemy, who had possessed…Read the comment

The judgments of God are sometimes to a sinful people as a moth, and as rottenness, or as a worm; as these consume the clothes…Read the comment
