Context of 2 Chronicles 28:19
17For the Edomites had come again and attacked Judah and led away captives. 18The Philistines had also invaded the cities of the low country and of the Negev (the South country) of Judah, and had taken Beth-shemesh, Aijalon, Gederoth, and Soco with their villages, and also Timnah with its villages, and Gimzo with its villages, and they settled there. For the Lord humbled Judah because of Ahaz king of Israel, for Ahaz had allowed unrestrained and undisciplined behavior in Judah and had been very unfaithful to the Lord. 20So Tilgath-pilneser king of Assyria came against him and harassed him instead of strengthening and supporting him. 21Although Ahaz took a portion [of treasure] from the house of the Lord and from the house (palace) of the king and from the leaders, and gave it [as tribute] to the king of Assyria, it did not help Ahaz.

Commentaries on 2 Chronicles 28:19
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 19Ahaz king of Israel - An instance of the lax use of the word “Israel” 2 Chronicles 12:6; 2 Chronicles 21:2. It is simply equivalent to “king of Judah.” He made Judah naked - literally, “he had caused licentiousness in Judah” - i. e. he had allowed Judah to break loose from all restraints of true religion, and to turn to any idolatry that they preferred 2 Chronicles 28:2-4. In this and in the following expression there is implied an apostasy resembling the…Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 1-212Ch 28:1-21. Ahaz, Reigning Wickedly, Is Afflicted by the Syrians. 1-4. Ahaz was twenty years old--(See on 2Ki 16:1-4). This prince, discarding the principles and example of his excellent father, early betrayed a strong bias to idolatry. He ruled with an arbitrary and absolute authority, and not as a theocratic sovereign: he not only forsook the temple of God, but embraced first the symbolic worship established in the sister kingdom, and afterwards the…Read the comment
