Revelation 22:17

Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 6 (1889-1890)

Again and again the true Witness says, “He that hath ears to hear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches.” [Revelation 2:7, 17.] But it is evident that some who have ears will not hear, will not receive, and will not become wise in regard to sacred truth. The Lord Jesus, the Alpha and Omega, gave the message to John in regard to the church. He understood the danger of their neglecting their God-given work. “The Spirit and the bride say, Come. And let him that heareth say, Come. And let him that is athirst come, and whosoever will, let him take the water of life freely.” [Revelation 22:17.] When God’s people hear to a purpose the things that are revealed to the churches, when they get the burden of the message, and say to others, “Come,” they are laborers together with God.

God calls for consecrated men, who are willing to deny self. The work of the heavenly intelligences is constant and earnest; for they are intent upon drawing men to Jesus. This is the manner in which ministers should labor. Their message should be, “Whosoever will, let him come and take of the water of life freely.” [Revelation 22:17.] In the ministration of angels, they do not labor so as to shut any soul out, but rather to gather them all in; but if the message of the gospel is to go to all men, human agents must cooperate with the angel workers.

The testimonies of God’s Word are plain and clear in regard to the snares of the devil. Yet there are not only church members on the devil’s ground, but those who are opening the Scriptures to others practice evil and defile soul and body. They are guilty before God because they are unholy. Were the church living by faith, had the oil of faith been in their vessels with their lamps, their guilty repose would end. They who believe the sacred, elevating truths for this time cannot sleep over them. A burden is upon them to reiterate the words of Christ, “And the Spirit and the bride say come, and let him that heareth say come, and let him that is athirst come, and whosoever will, let him take of the water of life freely.” [Revelation 22:17.]

The Gracious Invitation, January 18

AG 26.6

Everyone who has received Christ is called to work for the salvation of his fellow men. “The Spirit and the bride say, Come. And let him that heareth say, Come” (Revelation 22:17). The charge to give this invitation includes the entire church. Every one who has heard the invitation is to echo the message from hill and valley, saying, “Come.” ...

Day by day I am given an assurance of the love of God. “He that heareth my word,” Christ says, “and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life.” [John 5:24.] “These are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing ye might have life through His name.” [John 20:31.] I long to proclaim the gospel of good news, the glad tidings of great joy. I am anxious to present to our people the message that the Lord has given me, that Christ has made us His own, that He has bought us with a price beyond computation. The Saviour declared, “I am come a light into the world, that whosoever believeth on me should not abide in darkness.” [John 12:46.] He would have all heed his invitation, “Whosoever will, let him take of the water of life freely.” [Revelation 22:17.] God presents salvation to all; He gives it to those who believe.

We may reach up to Jesus Christ, who is our advocate in the heavenly courts. We need a friend at court. We have been sinning, been disobedient, been transgressors, and it is of the highest consequence to us that we have a friend at court to plead our cases to the Father. He says, If I be lifted up I will draw all men unto Me. Well, will all be drawn? Christ draws, but will they respond to the drawing? Will they come? The invitation here in Revelation is this: “And the Spirit and the bride say, Come, and let him that heareth say, Come, and let him that is athirst come. And whosoever will, let him take of the water of life freely.” [Revelation 22:17.]

May the Lord arouse His people to action is my prayer. There is need for every individual member of the church to arouse to work for Jesus. The calls are coming in from every clime, “Come over and help us.” [Acts 16:9.] “The Spirit and the Bride say Come, and let him that is athirst come, and whosoever will, let him come and take of the waters of life freely.” [Revelation 22:17.] There is our work laid out in a comprehensive manner for the diffusion of the truth.

Sabbath was a remarkable day. I spoke to those assembled in the tent at half past six o’clock, and read important matters as to how we should labor, not only to be blessed ourselves by seeking the Lord most earnestly, but to be a blessing to others, as we surely will be if we ourselves are drinking of the water of life. We will voice the words of Christ, the Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end. “And the Spirit and the bride say, Come; and let him that heareth say Come, and let him that is athirst come; and whosoever will, let him take of the water of life freely.” [Revelation 22:17.] It is essential that everyone should have a knowledge of the truth.

10LtMs, Lt 25, 1895, par. 3

The Lord has come very near to us, and strengthened and blessed us. We have had the truth presented in clear lines. Brother Prescott has never had such power in preaching the truth as he has had since coming to this meeting. The unbelievers sit with their eyes riveted on him in amazement, as the truth comes forth from his lips, vitalized by the Spirit of God. When I consider the responsibility resting upon all who hear this heaven-sent message, I tremble at the Word of the Lord. Who will receive the message sent to them? Now is the time when the kingdom of heaven is proclaimed to all, “Whosoever will, let him come, and take of the water of life freely.” [Verse 17.]

The Gracious Invitation, November 17

HP 328.2

Those who become children of God are under obligation to Him to do all in their power to seek and to save the lost.... The gracious invitation first given by Christ is to be taken up by human voices and sounded throughout the world: “The Spirit and the bride say, Come. And let him that heareth say, Come. And let him that is athirst come. And whosoever will, let him take the water of life freely” (Revelation 22:17). The church is to say, Come. Every power in the church is to be actively engaged on the side of truth. The followers of Christ are to combine in a strong effort to call the attention of the world to the fast-fulfilling prophecies of the Word of God.

Those who tented upon the ground were certainly comfortable in their tents, but visitors were not forgotten. Provision was also made for the entertainment of those who came upon the ground, and many expressed their appreciation of the reception tent and the dining tent, at which they could be served with palatable meals. The culinary arrangements were under the supervision of Brother and Sister Semmons, who have lately arrived here from the Sanitarium. The tables were very neat, covered with white oilcloth, and set with china, crockery, and glassware. The cleanliness, order, and taste of the arrangements added relish to the good meals served. The book tent displayed the usual assortment of our publications and attracted much attention. The large meeting pavilion was rarely commodious enough to accommodate the people who thronged the services. They were assured of welcome by a large sign over the gate, on which was printed, “Whosoever will, let him come.” [See Revelation 22:17.] On Saturday and Sunday, and during the evenings of the week, the grounds were thronged with interested spectators. The people listened in rapt attention to discourses on the coming of Christ, spiritualism, theosophy, the third angel’s message, the love of God, temperance, practical Godliness, and themes especially related to our time. The principal speakers were Pastors Corliss, Daniells, Cole, Colcord, Hare, Baker, and Mrs. E. G. White.

We feel in great need of the Holy Spirit of God in these meetings. The field is the world. The Lord Jesus came to sow the world with truth, and He has committed to His representatives the privilege of being colaborers with God. We need in these gatherings to ask of God for that living water that has been provided at infinite cost, that all may be called. “And the Spirit and the bride say, Come. And let him that heareth say, Come. And let him that is athirst come. And whosoever will, let him take the water of life freely.” Revelation 22:17.

The world is watching to see what manner of spirit is revealed by the men and women who claim to believe such strange doctrines. This message of truth must be so proclaimed by human lips, so represented by human character, that many by seeing our good works will glorify our Father in heaven. Your harsh speeches will not convince any soul. Christ has called us to sound the invitation, “Whosoever will, let him come.” [See Revelation 22:17.] It depends very much upon how you give the invitation whether you are successful.

Again and again the heavenly messenger has been sent to the school. When His presence has been acknowledged the darkness has fled away and the light has shone forth, and hearts have been drawn to God. The last words spoken by Christ to John were, “And the Spirit and the bride say, Come. And let him that heareth say, Come. And let him that is athirst come. And whosoever will, let him take the water of life freely.” [Revelation 22:17.] When we respond to God, and say, “Lord, we come,” then with joy will we draw water out of the wells of salvation. Shall we not keep holy festivals unto God? Shall we not show that we have some enthusiasm in His service? With the grand ennobling theme of salvation before us, shall we be as cold as statues of marble? If men can become so excited over a cricket match, or a horse race, or over foolish things that bring no good to anyone, shall we be unmoved when the plan of salvation is unfolded before us? Let the school and the church henceforth have festivals of rejoicing unto the Lord.

The invitations of the gospel are not to be narrowed down and presented only to a select few who, we suppose, will do us honor if they accept the truth. The message is to be given to all. “Ho, everyone that thirsteth,” is the cry, “come ye the waters, and he that hath no money; come ye, buy and eat; yea, come, buy wine and milk without money and without price.” [Isaiah 55:1.] “The Spirit and the bride say, Come. And let him that heareth say, Come. And let him that is athirst come. And whosoever will, let him take of the water of life freely.” [Revelation 22:17.]

It is a most fatal mistake to suppose that the work of saving souls depends <alone> on ordained ministers. All who are ordained unto the life of Christ are ordained to work for the salvation of the souls of their fellow men. “The Spirit and the bride say, Come. And let him that heareth say, Come. And let him that is athirst come. And whosoever will, let him take the water of life freely.” [Revelation 22:17.] It is by the Spirit’s power that souls that are dead in trespasses and sins are quickened to hear the words of life.

There need not be a cloud between the soul and Jesus. Why do so large a number who profess to believe in Christ have so limited a view of the life-giving power of Christ? We are not one of us to act as if the Word, the life and light, was to be given to us grudgingly. His great heart of love is longing to flood the soul with the bright beams of His righteousness. “Whoso is athirst let him come and take of the water of life freely.” [Revelation 22:17.] We are acting as if we must only taste, when our faith should say, “Let me drink of thy fulness.” Faith, living genuine faith, is required. We are privileged to receive of the abundant supply. Then our duty is, “Freely ye have received, freely give.” [Matthew 10:8.]

It was not to the apostles alone that the command was given, “Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.” [Mark 16:15.] The command has a broader meaning. “Let him that heareth say come.” [Revelation 22:17.] When the people of God in Battle Creek shall obey the Word of the Lord, the Holy Spirit will be their guide and counselor.

David’s sin has been the sin of selfish men in every age. They have made efforts to number Israel, to count the people; but Christ lifted up His voice to proclaim that the gift of eternal life was free to all who would receive Him as a personal Saviour. “For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth on him shall not perish but have everlasting life.” [John 3:16.] There is no nationality, tribe, or clans with God. He is the Maker of all mankind. It would be as just to put a price upon the air and light, the showers of rain, and every other blessing that God gives to our world, as to exclude from any sect, rank, or class of people the light shining from the throne of God. Christ declared that whosoever will may take of the water of life freely. [Revelation 22:17.]

All along the line faithful workers are called for. Christ has opened a fountain for the sinful, suffering world, and the voice of divine mercy is heard, “Come, all ye thirsting souls; come and drink. You may take of the water of life freely. Ye weary, fainting, parched souls, come, and let him that heareth say, Come, and whosoever will, let him come.” [See Revelation 22:17.] Let every soul, women as well as men, sound this message. Then the work will be carried to the waste places of the earth.

Let no one take the limited narrow position that any of the works of man can help in the least possible way to liquidate the debt of his transgression. This is a fatal deception. If you would understand it, you must cease haggling over your pet ideas, and with humble hearts survey the atonement. This matter is so dimly comprehended that thousands upon thousands claiming to be sons of God are children of the wicked one, because they will depend on their own works. God always demanded good works, the law demands it, but because man placed himself in sin where his good works were valueless, Jesus’ righteousness alone can avail. Christ is able to save to the uttermost because He ever liveth to make intercession for us. All that man can possibly do toward his own salvation is to accept the invitation, “Whosoever will, let him take the water of life freely.” [Revelation 22:17.] No sin can be committed by man for which satisfaction has not been met on Calvary. Thus the cross, in earnest appeals, continually proffers to the sinner a thorough expiation.

Our churches need a deeper sense of the power of the Saviour. As individuals and churches we have been relying on men. But before they can help us, they must receive wisdom from Christ. And the way to Him is open to us as well as to them. Christ has invited us to come to Him. “The Spirit and the bride say, Come. And let him that heareth say, Come. And let him that is athirst come. And whosoever will, let him take the water of life freely.” [Revelation 22:17.] Shall we comply with this invitation? We have accustomed ourselves to think that we must receive our wisdom from human sources. This is why we are so weak and strengthless. We have not been drinking of the Fountain of eternal life. Our spirituality is drying up because we are drinking from broken cisterns.

Your only hope is to unite with God. The Angel of the covenant is empowering His servants to be His witnesses, to carry the truth to all parts of the world. He has sent forth His angels with their messages. But as though these angels did not speed on their way fast enough to satisfy His heart of yearning love, He gives John personally the message to be given to all: “The Spirit and the bride say, Come. And let him that heareth say, Come. And let him that is athirst come. And whosoever will, let him take the water of life freely.” [Revelation 22:17.] He has opened a fountain for Judah and Jerusalem, and every member of His church is to show his loyalty by inviting the thirsty to drink of the water of life. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.” [Matthew 11:28-30.] Restless, craving, exhausted heart, think of the Saviour’s words, “Whosoever drinketh of this water that I shall give him shall never thirst.” Drink from the wells of worldly pleasure, and you will thirst again. Drink of the water of life, and you will be satisfied and refreshed. It will be in you “a well of water, springing up into everlasting life.” [John 4:14.] Love and light and truth and life are found in the everlasting gospel. Come, ye who labor and are heavy laden, come to the living water. “Let him that is athirst come. And whosoever will, let him take the water of life freely.” [Revelation 22:17.]

When you study the precious truths of the Bible, you will drink from the fountain of living water to which Jesus invited every thirsty soul with the same unchanging words of welcome, “If any man thirst, let him come unto me, and drink.” [John 7:37.] “The Spirit and the bride say, Come. And let him that heareth say, Come. And let him that is athirst come. And whosoever will, let him take of the water of life freely.” [Revelation 22:17.] Will you listen to the voice of Christ? Will you break away from self and respond, “We come, Lord, we come. With joy shall we draw water out of the wells of salvation”? Some will see the truth, and yet refuse to obey it. Solemn thought, that many are opposing that which has in itself carried to them the evidence of the truth. They are trying to muffle the sword of the Spirit which is the Word of God. They wrap the two-edged truth about with supposititious assertions, fanciful interpretations, to break its power upon their own minds. They seek to blunt its edge by their own carnal reasoning and invention of fables. Do they read the last chapter of Revelation, verses 18 and 19? Very forcible discourses have been given here in relation to the law and the gospel. Precious truth is presented, and many are strengthened and blessed. The inquiry is being made, “If I keep the Sabbath, what shall I do in regard to my business? I shall have to give it up. How shall I find work to sustain my family?” As the impossibilities present themselves, we present the precious promises.

Fundamentals of Christian Education

Chapter 47—Books and Authors in Our Schools

FE 386.2

The doctrines of grace and truth are not really understood by the larger number of our students and church members. Blindness of mind has happened to Israel. For human agents to misconstrue and put a forced, half truthful, and mystical construction upon the oracles of God, is an act which endangers their own souls, and the souls of others. “For I testify unto every man that heareth the words of the prophecy of this book. If any man shall add unto these things, God shall add unto him the plagues that are written in this book: and if any man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part out of the book of life, and out of the holy city, and from the things which are written in this book.” Revelation 22:18, 19. Those who, by their human construction, shall make the Scripture to utter that which Christ has never placed upon it, weaken its force, making the voice of God in instruction and warnings to testify falsehood, to avoid the inconvenience incurred by obedience to God’s requirements, have become signboards, pointing in the wrong direction, into false paths, which lead to transgression and death.

“And if any man will hurt them, fire proceedeth out of their mouth, and devoureth their enemies: and if any man will hurt them, he must in this manner be killed.” Revelation 11:5. Men cannot with impunity trample upon the word of God. The meaning of this fearful denunciation is set forth in the closing chapter of the Revelation: “I testify unto every man that heareth the words of the prophecy of this book, If any man shall add unto these things, God shall add unto him the plagues that are written in this book: and if any man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part out of the book of life, and out of the holy city, and from the things which are written in this book.” Revelation 22:18, 19.

But men cannot with impunity trample upon the word of God. The Lord had declared concerning his two witnesses, “If any man will hurt them, fire proceedeth out of their mouth, and devoureth their enemies; and if any man will hurt them, he must in this manner be killed.” [Revelation 11:5.] The meaning of this fearful denunciation is set forth in the closing chapter of the book of Revelation: “I testify unto every man that heareth the words of the prophecy of this book, If any man shall add unto these things, God shall add unto him the plagues that are written in this book. Regarding the messages he had written out, John the Revelator declared: “I testify unto every man that heareth the words of the prophecy of this book, If any man shall add unto these things,” - to lessen the force of their meaning - “God shall add unto him the plagues that are written in this book.” Many will make the words of the Revelation a spiritualistic mystery, robbing them of their solemn import. God declares that His judgments shall fall with increased dreadfulness upon any one who shall try to change the solemn words written in this book - the Revelation of Jesus Christ. “Blessed is he that readeth, and they that hear the words of this prophecy, and keep those things which are written therein; for the time is at hand.” “If any man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part out of the book of life, and out of the holy city, and from the things which are written in this book. He which testifieth these things saith, Surely I come quickly. Amen. Even so, come, Lord Jesus.” (Revelation 22:19, 20)

I wonder sometimes if I have left my home to no more return to it. I can truly say all the comforts and conveniences of home do not weigh anything with me to turn my face that way, unless I see my work is done and I am free to leave Europe. I am anxious to obtain that building, that house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens. I long to be there! “Come, Lord Jesus,” and come quickly! [Revelation 22:20.]

I am now waiting to have a set of teeth made for my set is spoiled. I see troubles in the church everywhere and laborers are needed everywhere, but everyone seems to want to carry out their own plans and to take their own course and have their own way. May the Lord work for His people. The end is near and my prayer is, “Come, Lord Jesus, and come quickly.” [Revelation 22:20.]

Sincere Students Can Understand Revelation

TT 305.3

Religious teachers have declared that Revelation is a sealed book and its secrets cannot be explained. But God does not wish His people to regard the book thus. It is “the revelation of Jesus Christ, which God gave unto Him, to show unto His servants things which must shortly come to pass.” “Blessed is he that readeth, and they that hear the words of this prophecy, and keep those things which are written therein: for the time is at hand.” Verses 1, 3. “He which testifieth these things saith, Surely I come quickly.” Revelation 22:20.
