Now is the time to work, just now. There is not a moment to lose. All national, denominational, and sectarian distinctions between rank and rank, between caste and caste, are lost. The message is to be proclaimed in the highways and byways and hedges. Every human agent is merging his character under one of two heads—the Prince of Life and the prince of darkness. To those who receive Christ He gives power to become loyal sons of God. They keep His commandments. The benediction rests upon them, “Blessed are they that do His commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city” (Revelation 22:14). The commandment breakers are left outside with the false shepherds whom they believed, and with “whosoever loveth and maketh a lie” (Revelation 22:15).The Great Controversy

Adam lost Eden, and was cut off from access to the tree of life, because of his disobedience. This every intelligent human being can know if he will. Lest sin, the transgression of the law of God, should become immortalized, man was separated from the tree of life for Adam’s supposed small transgression, and the flood-gates of woe were opened upon our world. Read these words of Christ; for they plainly show the whole human family what they must do to regain access to the life-giving tree: “Blessed are they that do His commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city.” “I Jesus have sent Mine angel to testify unto you these things in the churches. I am the root and the offspring of David, and the bright and morning star. And the Spirit and the bride say, Come. And let him that heareth say, Come. And let him that is athirst come. There is no sin in heaven. Through its portals those who disregard the light sent them by God can never enter. What must we do to inherit eternal life? The answer is, Keep the commandments. To the question, Who are the blessed? Christ answers, “Blessed are they that hear the Word of God, and keep it.” [Luke 11:28.] “Blessed are they that do His commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city.” “Without are dogs, and sorcerers,” “and murderers, and idolaters, and whosoever loveth and maketh a lie.” [Revelation 22:14, 15.]21LtMs, Lt 214, 1906, par. 12
Regarding the messages he had written out, John the Revelator declared: “I testify unto every man that heareth the words of the prophecy of this book, If any man shall add unto these things”—to lessen the force of their meaning—“God shall add unto him the plagues that are written in this book.” [Revelation 22:18.] Many will make the words of the Revelation a spiritualistic mystery, robbing them of their solemn import. God declares that His judgments shall fall with increased dreadfulness upon any one who shall try to change the solemn words written in this book—the Revelation of Jesus Christ. “Blessed is he that readeth, and they that hear the words of this prophecy, and keep those things which are written therein; for the time is at hand.” [Revelation 1:3.] “If any man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part out of the book of life, and out of the holy city, and from the things which are written in this book. He which testifieth these things saith, Surely I come quickly. Amen. Even so, come, Lord Jesus.” [Revelation 22:19, 20.]Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 20 (1905)

Nothing can take the place of obedience to a “Thus saith the Lord.” Knowledge that does not lead to a practice of self-denial and self-sacrifice of Christ, but to self-exaltation and self-sufficiency, is opposed to practical godliness. God calls for obedience. Self-sufficiency in a family or an institution means great injury to the work of God and to those who cherish it. True faith leads away from the selfish plans and self-pleasing that is contrary to God. Obedience, in order to be acceptable to God, must be the obedience that Christ ever offered to the Father. In response to the question, Who shall enter the kingdom of heaven? Christ says, “Not every one that saith unto Me, Lord, Lord, shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he that doeth the will of My Father which is in heaven.” [Matthew 7:21.] What must we do to inherit eternal life? The answer is, Keep the commandments. To the question, Who are the blessed? Christ answers, “Blessed are they who hear the word and do it.” [Luke 11:28.] “Blessed are they that do His commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city.” “Without are dogs and sorcerers ... and murderers, and idolaters, and whosoever loveth and maketh a lie.” [Revelation 22:14, 15.]20LtMs, Ms 166, 1905, par. 6

“Yes, just the same. The light that I have is that God’s servants should go quietly to work, preaching the grand, precious truths of the Bible—showing that the reason why Christ died is because the law of God is immutable, unchangeable, eternal. The Spirit of the Lord will awaken the conscience and the understanding of those with whom you work, bringing the commandments of God to their remembrance. I can hardly describe to you the way in which this has been presented to me. The Lord says in Revelation 22:16: “I Jesus have sent mine angel to testify unto you these things in the churches.” Have any of you seen this angel? The messengers from heaven are close beside those who stand before the people, holding forth the word of life. In preaching the truth, it is not always best to present those strong points of truth that will arouse prejudice, especially where such strong feelings exist as are felt in the Southern States. Our work is a necessary one. Your work is appointed you of heaven. “I Jesus have sent mine angel to testify of these things in the church.” [Revelation 22:16.] Then if heavenly messengers have a testimony to bear to the churches, well may every minister voice the words of Christ, “He that hath ears to hear let them hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches.” [Revelation 3:22.] Some will not listen to the message, and some who do hear, pay no heed. When the voice from heaven is heard, it becomes every human agent to place himself in the attitude of a solemn listener.7LtMs, Lt 97, 1892, par. 10
“I am the root and offspring of David, and the bright and morning star.” [Revelation 22:16.] There is life and vitality and brightness in the message. Angels see the inhabitants of the world, and they know that Jesus died for the salvation of the world, and they know the value of the human soul. They know that all who have genuine faith in Jesus constitute a portion of the Lord’s family; that every individual soul formed after the image of God is capable of being transformed through grace and becoming one with Christ, that the glorified image of Christ shall be represented by them; that the Father will love man even as He loves His Son. Then while the living human agent stands in holy surrender to God, saying, “Here am I; send me” [Isaiah 6:8], will that willing human messenger be left unaided to do the grand and solemn work for this time? No! no! He works in holy companionship with heavenly angels. My brother, do not feel that you have the work to do your own self, alone. While it seems almost impossible to go forward, while so many are idlers in the marketplace while so many carry no real burden, be not discouraged. You are not alone, and do not feel that you are alone.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 10 (1895)

Here is the messenger of heaven right beside those who stand in the desk, God’s chosen messengers. It is not the best way to present those things that will arouse prejudice <as you commence your labor. You need to be guarded at every point. There are honest, sincere people in the South who are hungering for the truth, and there are those who are now deeply prejudiced against white people coming in to the South. When these men shall be converted, or else removed from the work, then there will be disclosures that will reveal a state of things in the General Conference financial standing that will be an astonishment to many. This is as far as I have the liberty to go. There are two parties, one imbued with the Spirit of the Lord, receiving from the Lord and communicating to others. The Lord will, as is stated in Revelation, work for the enlightenment of his people. “I Jesus have sent my angel to testify these things unto you in the churches. I am the root and offspring of David, the bright and morning star.” [Revelation 22:16.] Thus is the work. The visible angel is not seen, but the messenger of God through whom that angel is communicating is seen, and he voices the message of the angel who stands by his side. Let the testimony of the world’s Redeemer be dwelt upon. “I, Jesus, have sent mine angel to testify of these things unto the churches.” [Revelation 22:16.] There is need of strictly guarding the word that the pen traces upon paper. The Lord has given to the world a message of wonderful mercy. God has sent to men the light of heaven, but they have rejected the truth and followed in the path of the Pharisees of Christ’s day. In the world today the rejection of the mercies, the warnings, and invitations of Christ has been repeated. The great salvation offered to humanity in these last days in the “bright and morning Star,” has not been received. [Revelation 22:16.] His counsels have been despised. His temple courts have been converted into desecrated shrines, places of unholy traffic. Unrighteousness, selfishness, the love of gain, envy, pride, passion, and malice have been entertained. Men have blinded their eyes and stumbled along in darkness, living on in guilty unconsciousness of their aggravating sins, and turning God’s agents from their rights. They have despised reproof and warnings; they have treated the ambassadors of God with scorn and His messages as idle tales. In their stubbornness they have refused to humble their hearts and repent. Our Father Cares

God has given his messengers the truth to proclaim. Then the churches are to voice the truth from the lips of the messengers, and use their talents in every way possible to make the ministry a power to communicate truth by their catching the first rays of light, and diffusing the same. Here is our great sin. We are years behind. The ministers have been seeking the hidden treasures, and have been opening up the casket, and letting the jewels of truth shine forth; but there is not one hundredth part being done by the members of the church that God requires of them. They will in that great day be self-convicted and self-condemned for their slothfulness. May the Lord lead them to self-penitence, and to see themselves now, and to exclaim, “Lord, I am that fruitless fig tree!” May the Lord forgive his people who are not doing the work in his vineyard that he has given them to do! “I Jesus have sent mine angel to testify unto you these things in the churches. Christ says, “I Jesus have sent Mine angel to testify unto you these things in the churches. I am the root and offspring of David (speaking of His humanity), and the bright and morning Star (speaking of His divinity).” [Verse 16.] In Christ humanity and divinity are united. I address the church in Battle Creek. Let the sweetness and fragrance of the Spirit of God find a place in your hearts. Then it will be entertained in your homes. A home where Christ presides is a home where peace and love and joy are the ruling elements. Then the Spirit of God will not be repulsed by your perverse, untamable spirit. You will bear about with you the sweet fragrance of peace, and love, and unity. Your work is not to repulse, but to draw, saying, “The Spirit and the Bride say, Come. And let him that heareth say, Come. And let him that is athirst come and take of the water of life freely.” [Revelation 22:17.]13LtMs, Lt 29, 1898, par. 10
Hear the words of the Saviour, “I Jesus have sent mine angel to testify unto you these things in the church, I am the root and the offspring of David, and the bright and morning star.” [Verse 16.] What a wonderful declaration is this. Christ Himself united the wide extremes of divinity and humanity. “All power is vested in me, both in heaven and earth,” He declares. “I have made in it my plan that angels as well as men should act a part in My service. Therefore I have sent mine angel to communicate these things to all the world; and lo, I am with you to the end of the world. The Holy Spirit and the church, angels and men, are to combine in the great, grand work of pointing to the living fountain of life, opened to the whole world if they believe on Me. Through John the Revelator, Christ declares: “I am the root and the offspring of David, and the bright and morning star.” [Revelation 22:16.] In the message that we are to bear, the character of God, as revealed in Christ, is to be manifested to the world. The call is to be sounded by human lips and is to be exemplified in the daily life of both the young and the elderly disciples.22LtMs, Lt 384, 1907, par. 7

We want everybody to hear the message of warning. We are to communicate the light that God has richly bestowed upon us. The blessing of the Lord, received, must be passed on to others. Some will say, “I am not fit to serve God. How can I do this work of communicating truth. The opposition to the commandments of God is so strong, what can I, a poor weak creature do?” It is well for you to realize your weakness, but you are to lean wholly upon God for strength. See Matthew 28. “Then the eleven disciples went away into Galilee, into a mountain where Jesus had appointed them. And when they saw him, they worshipped him: but some doubted.” [Verses 16, 17.] There will always be men who will not [accept] evidence that is given them. We find this in every age of the world. Truth is smothered, and error is exalted and circulated as truth. “And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world.” [Verses 18-20.] Here is the great work to be done. There is God’s plan. Every fitting, holy agency is to bear a message in the Bible words: “And the Spirit and the bride say, Come.” [Revelation 22:17.] Every consecrated plan is to [be] put into action to do this great and grand work. Christ, angels, and consecrated, converted workers are combined in the work of giving this last message of mercy to the world.21LtMs, Ms 151, 1906, par. 3
“And the Spirit and the bride say, Come. And let him that heareth say, Come. And let him that is athirst come. And whosoever will, let him take the water of life freely.” [Verse 17.] Amen. Here is the plan in which every holy agency is combined and united for the recovery of man from Satan’s snare. Every new force that receives the message is to join their powers of voice and pen to give the warning: “I Jesus have sent mine angel to testify unto you these things in the churches. I am the root and the offspring of David, and the bright and morning star.” [Verse 16.] The Lord Jesus unites the wide extremes of divinity and humanity. This work is being done now to instruct the churches everywhere in the clear words of the gospel message. No mysteries are to be brought in. The simple gospel message is to go forth to instruct the churches in the light of the truth. God’s people must give to the world a representation of the character of God in Jesus Christ. The Christian churches are fast losing their knowledge of God. His character has been misunderstood and misinterpreted. But a message has come from God which must be proclaimed. The trumpet must give a certain sound. “I Jesus have sent mine angel to proclaim these things to the churches.” [Revelation 22:16.] The truth, the revelation, which Jesus gave to John must be sounded forth everywhere. “Lift up thy voice with strength; lift it up, be not afraid; say unto the cities of Judah, Behold your God!” “Behold, the Lord God will come with a strong hand, and his arm shall rule for him: behold, his reward his with him, and his work before him. COL 235.1
The command given in the parable, to “compel them to come in,” has often been misinterpreted. It has been regarded as teaching that we should force men to receive the gospel. But it denotes rather the urgency of the invitation, and the effectiveness of the inducements presented. The gospel never employs force in bringing men to Christ. Its message is “Ho, every one that thirsteth, come ye to the waters.” Isaiah 55:1. “The Spirit and the bride say, Come.... And whosoever will, let him take the water of life freely.” Revelation 22:17. The power of God’s love and grace constrains us to come.Manual for Canvassers

Let him remember, as he sells the books which give a knowledge of the truth, that he is doing the work of God, and that every talent is to be used to the glory of His name. God will be with every one who seeks to understand the truth that he may set it before others in clear lines. God has spoken plainly and clearly: “The Spirit and the bride say, Come; and let him that heareth say, Come.” Revelation 22:17. And let him that heareth say, Come. And let him that is athirst come. And whosoever will, let him take the water of life freely.” [Revelation 22:17.] He has opened a fountain for Judah and Jerusalem, and every member of His church is to show his loyalty by inviting the thirsty to drink of the water of life. The delegated servants of Christ are to bear their testimony in the power of the Spirit. The yearning desire of the Saviour for the salvation of sinners is to mark all their efforts. The gracious invitation, first given by Christ, is to be taken up by human voices and sounded throughout the world: “The Spirit and the bride say, Come. And let him that heareth say, Come. And let him that is athirst come. And whosoever will, let him take the water of life freely.” [Revelation 22:17.] The church is to say, Come. Every power in the church is to be actively engaged on the side of Christ. The followers of Christ are to combine in a strong effort to call the attention of the world to the fast-fulfilling prophecies of the Word of God. Infidelity is gaining a strong hold in the churches. Shall those to whom great light has been given now be cold and faithless? A power from beneath is leading men to war against the truth. But just as soon as I rose upon my feet, I felt the everlasting arms were around me. I went there meeting after meeting, I bore my testimony; I worked in the revival efforts, and I was refreshed every time. When I came there, I felt as though I was invigorated and refreshed. And I have kept it ever since. The Spirit and power of God have been with me since that time, and many know how I have suffered with the influenza. Turn not to human agencies, but to Christ; He is the hope of His people. The Son of God came to declare that although the agencies of evil had created rebellion in heaven, and sin had entered the universe of God, yet Christ and the Father would redeem the fallen race. Laying aside His kingly crown and royal robe, He gave Himself to the human family, to pass through test and trial, and to demonstrate to every son and daughter of Adam that it is possible through faith in Him to resist the devices of Satan. Tempted in all points as man is tempted, Christ overcame through the power of divinity. He seeks to teach men and women that they may overcome through the same power.Manuscript Releases, vol. 8 [Nos. 526-663]

Extending the gracious invitation—The third angel of Revelation 14 is represented as flying swiftly through the midst of heaven crying: “Here are they that keep the commandments of God, and the faith of Jesus.” Here is shown the nature of the work of the people of God. They have a message of so great importance that they are represented as flying in the presentation of it to the world. They are holding in their hands the bread of life for a famishing world. The love of Christ constraineth them. This is the last message. There are no more to follow, no more invitations of mercy to be given after this message shall have done its work. What a trust! The testimonies of God’s word are plain and clear in regard to the snares of the devil. Yet there are not only church members on the devil’s ground, but those who are opening the Scriptures to others practice evil and defile the soul and body. They are guilty before God because they are unholy. Were the church living by faith, had the oil of faith been in their vessels with their lamps, their guilty repose would end. They who believe the sacred, elevating truths for this time cannot sleep over them. A burden is upon them to reiterate the words of Christ, “And the Spirit and the bride say, Come. Isaiah describes Him as the “rock of ages,” and “the shadow of a great rock in a weary land.” Isaiah 26:4 (margin); 32:2. And he records the precious promise, bringing vividly to mind the living stream that flowed for Israel: “When the poor and needy seek water, and there is none, and their tongue faileth for thirst, I the Lord will hear them, I the God of Israel will not forsake them.” “I will pour water upon him that is thirsty, and floods upon the dry ground;” “in the wilderness shall waters break out, and streams in the desert.” The invitation is given, “Ho, every one that thirsteth, come ye to the waters.” Isaiah 41:17; 44:3; 35:6; 55:1. And in the closing pages of the Sacred Word this invitation is echoed. The river of the water of life, “clear as crystal,” proceeds from the throne of God and the Lamb; and the gracious call is ringing down through the ages, “Whosoever will, let him take the water of life freely.” Revelation 22:17.Reflecting Christ

Let no one take the limited, narrow position that any of the works of man can help in the least possible way to liquidate the debt of his transgression. This is a fatal deception. If you would understand it, you must cease haggling over your pet ideas, and with humble hearts survey the atonement. This matter is so dimly comprehended that thousands upon thousands claiming to be sons of God are children of the wicked one, because they will depend on their own works. God always demanded good works, the law demands it, but because man placed himself in sin where his good works were valueless, Jesus’ righteousness alone can avail. Christ is able to save to the uttermost because He ever liveth to make intercession for us. All that man can possibly do toward his own salvation is to accept the invitation, “Whosoever will, let him take the water of life freely” (Revelation 22:17). No sin can be committed by man for which satisfaction has not been met on Calvary. Thus the cross, in earnest appeals, continually proffers to the sinner a thorough expiation.Steps to Christ
Chapter 3—Repentance
SC 28.1
The same divine mind that is working upon the things of nature is speaking to the hearts of men and creating an inexpressible craving for something they have not. The things of the world cannot satisfy their longing. The Spirit of God is pleading with them to seek for those things that alone can give peace and rest—the grace of Christ, the joy of holiness. Through influences seen and unseen, our Saviour is constantly at work to attract the minds of men from the unsatisfying pleasures of sin to the infinite blessings that may be theirs in Him. To all these souls, who are vainly seeking to drink from the broken cisterns of this world, the divine message is addressed, “Let him that is athirst come. And whosoever will, let him take the water of life freely.” Revelation 22:17.Testimonies for the Church, vol. 9
Chapter 4—The Need of Earnest Effort
9T 43.1
In the power of the Spirit the delegated servants of Christ are to bear witness for their Leader. The yearning desire of the Saviour for the salvation of sinners is to mark all their efforts. The gracious invitation, first given by Christ, is to be taken up by human voices and sounded throughout the world: “Whosoever will, let him take the water of life freely.” Revelation 22:17. The church is to say: “Come.” Every power in the church is to be actively engaged on the side of Christ. The followers of Christ are to combine in a strong effort to call the attention of the world to the fast-fulfilling prophecies of the word of God. Infidelity and spiritualism are gaining a strong hold in the world. Shall those to whom great light has been given be cold and faithless now?Christ’s Object Lessons
Chapter 29—“To Meet the Bridegroom”
COL 411.2
This is the class that in time of peril are found crying, Peace and safety. They lull their hearts into security, and dream not of danger. When startled from their lethargy, they discern their destitution, and entreat others to supply their lack; but in spiritual things no man can make up another’s deficiency. The grace of God has been freely offered to every soul. The message of the gospel has been heralded, “Let him that is athirst come. And whosoever will, let him take the water of life freely.” Revelation 22:17. But character is not transferable. No man can believe for another. No man can receive the Spirit for another. No man can impart to another the character which is the fruit of the Spirit’s working. “Though Noah, Daniel, and Job were in it [the land], as I live, saith the Lord God, they shall deliver neither son nor daughter; they shall but deliver their own souls by their righteousness.” Ezekiel 14:20.Testimonies for the Church, vol. 6
Chapter 2—The Work for This Time
6T 20.2
Now, with John the Baptist, we are to point men to Jesus, saying: “Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.” John 1:29. Now as never before is to be sounded the invitation: “If any man thirst, let him come unto Me, and drink.” “The Spirit and the bride say, Come. And let him that heareth say, Come. And let him that is athirst come. And whosoever will, let him take the water of life freely.” John 7:37; Revelation 22:17.Testimonies for the Church, vol. 6

6T 314.3
Let the canvasser remember that he has an opportunity to sow beside all waters. Let him remember, as he sells the books which give a knowledge of the truth, that he is doing the work of God and that every talent is to be used to the glory of His name. The cry of Christ to the thirsty soul is still going forth, and it appeals to us with even greater power than to those who heard it in the temple on that last day of the feast. The fountain is open for all. The weary and exhausted ones are offered the refreshing draught of eternal life. Jesus is still crying, “If any man thirst, let him come unto Me, and drink.” “Let him that is athirst come. And whosoever will, let him take the water of life freely.” “Whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life.” Revelation 22:17; John 4:14.The Desire of Ages

DA 822.3
“The Spirit and the bride say, Come. And let him that heareth say, Come.” Revelation 22:17. Everyone who hears is to repeat the invitation. Whatever one’s calling in life, his first interest should be to win souls for Christ. He may not be able to speak to congregations, but he can work for individuals. To them he can communicate the instruction received from his Lord. Ministry does not consist alone in preaching. Those minister who relieve the sick and suffering, helping the needy, speaking words of comfort to the desponding and those of little faith. Nigh and afar off are souls weighed down by a sense of guilt. It is not hardship, toil, or poverty that degrades humanity. It is guilt, wrongdoing. This brings unrest and dissatisfaction. Christ would have His servants minister to sin-sick souls. The Faith I Live By

We may reach up to Jesus Christ who is our Advocate in the heavenly courts. We need a friend at court. We have been sinning, been disobedient, been transgressors, and it is of the highest consequence to us that we have a Friend at court to plead our cases to the Father. He says, “If I be lifted up I will draw all men unto Me.” Well, will all be drawn? Christ draws but will they respond to the drawing? Will they come? The invitation here in Revelation is this: “And the Spirit and the bride say, Come. And let him that heareth say, Come. And let him that is athirst come. They will learn of the great Teacher, and while they are presenting Bible subjects to those they are trying to help, the grace of Christ will fill their hearts, and the Word of God will unfold before them. Brother Crouch is not a sinner above all others. No, no. God pities him. Said the angel, “Whosoever will, let him come and partake of the waters of life freely.” [Revelation 22:17.] He has been pushed back, discouraged, because he was uncouth and rough. Yet God can polish and refine him and fit him for the heavenly casket. He must strive hard to be an overcomer and lay aside every idol [so] that he may be accepted of God. His words have not been choice. He has lacked wisdom and has done wrong. But I saw that those who had experience and knowledge have the greater sin in the sight of Heaven. They have come far short of the mark. Their course of conduct has not been circumspect and faultless. They are worthy of blame. They gave Brother Crouch occasion. They have laid stumbling blocks in his way. They have not tried to help him who most needed help, as did our blessed Pattern, but they crowded and despised him whom God has pitied, loved, and wished to save.Radiant Religion

There are the impressions that are going forth all the time. There is an atmosphere that surrounds the human soul, and that atmosphere is a heavenly atmosphere or a hellish atmosphere. There are but two distinct lines. Either we are on Christ’s side of the question or on the enemy’s side. And if we are continually drawing rays of divine light from glory, angels of God are around about us and there is an atmosphere that surrounds the human soul. The Lord Jesus, the Alpha and Omega, gave a message to John in regard to the work of the churches, for He understood how great would be the danger of neglecting their God-given work, and thus make a failure of diffusing light to others. The invitation of the gospel was to extend from Christ to the church and from the church to the world. “And the Spirit and the Bride say, Come. And let him that heareth say, Come. And let him that is athirst say, Come; and whosoever will, let him take of the water of life freely.” [Revelation 22:17.] The work of diffusing the gospel is neglected by those who are specified as hearing. Again and again the True Witness says, “He that hath ears to hear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches.” [Revelation 2:7, 17.] But it is evident that some who have ears will not hear, will not receive, and will not become wise in regard to sacred truth. Some, who have been making crooked paths for their feet, will depart from the faith. The Lord Jesus, the Alpha and Omega, gave the message to John in regard to the church. He understood the danger of their neglecting their God-given work. “The Spirit and the bride say, Come. And let him that heareth say, Come. He was shown that city and saw the streets of transparent gold clear as crystal. Every one that goes into that city is changed and sanctified in character here in this life. The nations that have kept the truth enter in to the city of God, and a voice is heard, clear and distinct, “Blessed are they that do His commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city” [Revelation 22:14].Sermons and Talks, vol. 1

Will it do it? No, decidedly not. Christ says, “I am the true witness. I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end, the first and the last.” (See Revelation 1:8.) “Blessed are they that do his commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city” (Revelation 22:14). I want to be there. I want to see the King in His beauty. The King that died a victim on Calvary’s cross for me, that I should not be found, when he comes in power and great glory to be admired of all them that believe, under the bondage of sin.1SAT 235.1
Can we afford to say, My father did not keep the commandments, and I think he was right? Well, if your father lived today, and he was a Christian living according to every ray of light, when the light came that the law of God was being transgressed, he would on his knees inquire, is this so? and then he would have said, “Children, we have made a decided mistake. We have been keeping an institution that has not a single syllable for its sanctity in the Word of God. I am sorry that I have not been a man of the Bible before. I am sorry that I have not seen the precious light of truth. Now it has come to me and I am responsible for it, I do not want to be found a lawbreaker but a subject of the King. I want to hear Him say to me, ‘Sit ye on my right hand.’ ‘Blessed are they that do his commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life, and enter in through the gates into the city.’” (See Revelation 22:14.)Sermons and Talks, vol. 1

God wants you to receive the wisdom that He has for you. He wants you to be Bible students and Bible believers, living in obedience to the words, “Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy strength, and with all thy mind: and thy neighbor as thyself” [Luke 10:27]. Then He can bestow on you the power of His truth. Then He can mold and fashion you after the divine similitude. Living in conformity to Christ’s will, you will be changed into His likeness. You will grow up into Him, and at last the pearly gates of the holy city will for you swing back on their glittering hinges, and you will enter to hear the words, “Blessed are they that do His commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city” [Revelation 22:14]. God has elected a character in harmony with His law, and anyone who shall reach the standard of His requirement will have an entrance into the kingdom of glory. Christ Himself said, “He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not on the Son shall not see life” (John 3:36). “Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven” (Matthew 7:21). And in the Revelation He declares, “Blessed are they that do his commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city” (Revelation 22:14). As regards man’s final salvation, this is the only election brought to view in the Word of God.Sermons and Talks, vol. 1

[Luke 21:27.] At first we did not see Jesus on the cloud, but as it drew near the earth, we could behold his lovely person. This cloud when it first appeared was the Sign of the Son of Man in heaven. The apostle James, who wrote after the death of Christ, refers to the Decalogue as “the royal law” and “the perfect law of liberty” (James 2:8; 1:25). And the revelator, half a century after the crucifixion, pronounces a blessing upon them “that do His commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city” (Revelation 22:14). Then commenced the jubilee, when the land should rest. I saw the pious slave rise in triumph and victory, and shake off the chains that bound him, while his wicked master was in confusion, and knew not what to do;13
Millerites and early Adventists often drew parallels of different kinds between the year of jubilee as the climax of the ancient Jewish calendar (Lev. 25) and the climax of earth’s history at the coming of Christ and the millennium. Thus, the instruction given that all Hebrew slaves were to be freed in the jubilee year (Lev. 25:10) was seen by William Miller as “typical of the redemption of the people of God from all captivity, bondage, or death into the glorious liberty of the sons of God; Rom. viii.21; and is also typical of the times of the restitution of all things. Acts iii. 21.” Likewise J. H. Waggoner, writing in 1859, saw “the fiftieth year, or jubilee … [when] bondmen went free … [as] typifying the final redemption of God’s people … now groaning under the curse.” It is possible that the passage about “the pious slave” in this vision should be given a similar typological interpretation rather than a literal one. Most readers, however, have assumed that the slave statement should be understood literally. Dudley Canright, archcritic of Seventh-day Adventism, classifies it with “other mistakes” that Ellen White made: “In 1849 she foretold what would happen when Jesus came, and said: ‘I saw the pious slave rise.’ But now there are no slaves. She had not then dreamed of the abolition of slavery.” Considerable discussion of this charge has ensued over the years.

I saw that we sensed and realized but little of the importance of the Sabbath, to what we yet should realize and know of its importance and glory. I saw we knew not what it was yet to ride upon the high places of the earth and to be fed with the heritage of Jacob. But when the refreshing and latter rain shall come from the presence of the Lord, and the glory of His power, we shall know what it is to be fed with the heritage of Jacob and ride upon the high places of the earth. Then shall we see the Sabbath more in its importance and glory. But [we] shall not see it in all its glory and importance until the covenant of peace is made with us at the voice of God, and the pearly gates of the New Jerusalem are thrown open and swing back on their glittering hinges, and the glad and joyful voice of the lovely Jesus is heard, richer than any music that ever fell on mortal ear, bidding us to enter, that we had a perfect right in the city, for we had kept the commandments of God, and heaven, sweet heaven is our home, for we have kept the commandments of God.5
For a complementary perspective, compare this statement with the following parallel passage found in Ellen White’s first vision, “Jesus … laid hold of the pearly gate, swung it back on its glittering hinges, and said to us, ‘You have washed your robes in My blood, stood stiffly for My truth, enter in.’ We all marched in and felt we had a perfect right in the city” (Early Writings, p. 17).

We did hope to save Brother Mallon. We heard he was writing a tract against us. We attended meeting in his hall, hired and used for meetings by our people. I spoke in regard to the Sabbath distinguishing us from the world, and that it was a sign, a test, and then spoke of the martyrs who suffered for the truth’s sake. Meanwhile Mallon came into the meeting; and as I was near the close of my discourse, interpreted by Brother Bourdeau, Mr. Mallon arose and interrupted me and expressed in strong terms great anxiety for his soul and wanted to know whether he would be lost if he did not keep the Sabbath. He said, “Answer me yes or no. Say yes, or no.” I told him that was a question not for me to answer. I could say that if light came we would be judged according to the light the Lord had permitted to reflect upon our pathway. This answer made him very impatient. Yes or no he was determined should be my answer. I told him very much depended upon yes, or no, and I would have to lay out general principles and then leave the matter where the Bible left it. “Blessed are they that do His commandments, for they shall have right to the tree of life, and enter in through the gates into the city.” [Revelation 22:14.]Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 4 (1883 - 1886)

They would say that we have something that they have not, and they would begin to inquire, “What can I do to be as happy as that man?” My brethren and sisters, God is your strength, and He does not want you to go crippling along in this life. And when you enter the gate of the New Jerusalem, you will read over the gate, “Blessed are they that do His commandments.” [Revelation 22:14.] He will welcome you and with His own hand place the crown upon the brow of all those who enter there. The conditions of obtaining eternal life are specified so plainly in the Word of God that the real sincere seeker for truth who chooses Christ as his portion need not make a mistake and walk in the course of error and disobedience and think he is in the holy path cast up for the ransomed of the Lord to walk in. His commandments are not grievous, not a yoke of bondage, as Satan tried to make Eve believe they were. The deceptive story which Satan started in Eden—that God’s law restricts their liberty and is a yoke of bondage—is repeated again and again by the self-deceived, by the transgressors of God’s law. You want heaven, eternal life. Then what will you do in order to obtain it? You must be obedient to all of God’s commandments. It is the only moral standard and rule that God has given for the use of His subjects. He has rules and statutes, and it is for man to obey them. It was because Adam and Eve did not obey that they lost the paradise of God. Now He says, “Blessed are they that do His commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city.” [Revelation 22:14.] Then there is something to gain; it is a right to the tree of life; a right to the tree that Adam and Eve were forbidden to partake of after their transgression. In the judgment, when brought face to face with souls with whom you have come in contact, what can be your feelings when you realize that you have not warned those who were perishing in their sins? How will it appear to you in that great day—the little effort you have made in self-denial, in self-sacrifice, for the salvation of others? What is the matter? Haven’t we reason given us of God? Have we not hearts to feel, minds to consider and to use to His glory? Who enters through the gates into the city of God? Those who keep His commandments. “Blessed are they that do His commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city.” Revelation 22:14. What constitutes the commandments of God? The first four are to love God supremely, the last six, to love our neighbor as ourselves. And can you do this and not show them the way of salvation in and through Christ Jesus?Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 7 (1891-1892)

After the meeting opened I arose to speak. The unbelief and prejudice were so strong that a thick granite wall seemed to bar our way. Oh, how I longed for warmth and power. And it came! The Lord gave me His Holy Spirit and I was perfectly free. I spoke of the love of Jesus and His great sacrifice made in our behalf that we might have happiness in this life by being obedient to all of God’s commandments, and the blessing of the future life. “Blessed are they that do his commandments, that they may ... enter in through the gates into the city” and “have right to the tree of life.” [Revelation 22:14.]Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 8 (1893)

Faith works by love, and purifies the soul, expelling that love <of sin> which leads to disloyalty and transgression of the law of God. The love of God in the heart which has accepted the truth of heavenly origin always leads to willing obedience to the commandments of God. The transformation of character wrought by the Holy Spirit brings the mind and will of the human agent into perfect harmony with the divine, and <in> perfect harmony with the moral standard of righteousness. Who can be made to understand that the inner life must be hid with Christ in God? Such are in the habit of praying, for Christ prayed. Such are in the habit of searching the Scriptures for themselves, and more earnestly as they see the day approaching. Such ones, who love God supremely and their neighbors as themselves, will give themselves to God as a free will offering, and that gift will include all they have. None can give themselves without reserve unless their possessions also are included and they are dispensing their God-given trust of means as the Lord’s goods. They produce fruit in good works. “Blessed are they that do his commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city.” [Revelation 22:14.]Manuscript Releases, vol. 14 [Nos. 1081-1135]

When Christ was crucified and lay in Joseph’s new tomb the grave could not hold Him. He broke the fetters of the tomb and came forth from His prison house, and above the rent sepulcher He proclaimed, “I am the resurrection and the life.” [John 11:25.] That life is free for us to take. Who receives it? Those that continue to transgress? “Blessed are they that do his commandments that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city.” [Revelation 22:14.] God has given us this probation any time to see who will obey His commandments. [1 Peter 2:9.] The obedient are called the just; they are drawn to the holy Magnet, Jesus Christ! The holy attracts the holy. He that is unjust will be unjust still. Character cannot then be made or transformed. The oil of grace cannot be lent by one to another, neither have the foolish virgins time to buy oil for themselves. The human agent who bears the test and trial and proving of God receives his reward. “Blessed are they that do his commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city.” [Revelation 22:14.] Here the line is placed in our hands, enabling us to measure the love of God. Yet there are greater depths for the line to reach. The cross is invested with a power that language cannot express. Christ’s sacrifice in behalf of the human race puts to shame our meager efforts and methods to meet and uplift humanity, to help sinful men and women to find Jesus.12LtMs, Lt 10, 1897, par. 24
It has pleased the Lord to have select, representative men connected with the work as missionaries—men who have been tested and proved and tried. Often they have been in trying situations, and by earnest, frequent and laborious examination of their own spirit, habits, temper, appetites, and practice, they have carefully and thoroughly investigated themselves. Just as a carpenter, who in erecting a building inspects every piece of timber he puts in to see if any are weak or rotten, and as he discards all defective ones, so the human character should be carefully examined, to see if it is becoming more and more like Christ Jesus, pure, peaceable, kind, full of goodness, love, and truth. Those who enter through the gates into the city must and will have a right to the tree of life. All the Christian world is represented in this parable. The bride constitutes the church who is waiting for the second appearing of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. Some who have a nominal faith are not prepared for His coming. The oil of grace is not feeding their lamp, and they are not prepared to enter in to the marriage supper of the Lamb. The representation is such as to call forth our earnest study, that we may know what preparation we who are living in the last days are to make, that we may enter in and partake of the marriage supper of the Lamb. Those whom God has made His stewards are to search the Scriptures earnestly, that they may communicate its truths to others, leading them to the path which has been cast up for the ransomed of the Lord. By precept and example we are to teach others that through the grace of Christ they may be obedient to all God’s commandments, and be clothed with the righteousness of Christ. This is the work God requires His servants to do. We are not to follow our own perverse nature, but are to be like little children. I know not how to trace these words. I would try to make sin appear as the terrible thing that it is, that students and teachers may not feel it a small thing to sin. It was sin that caused all this suffering to the Son of God. These things should be considered. Let not teachers refrain from exercising all their God-given power to restrain sin in the students. Let ministers and all who claim to be children of God work as never before to counterwork iniquity. We must respect and reverence Christ and all who are laboring with God to eradicate evil.
