But in the visions of the night this matter was presented to me as a matter that in no case should be repeated, because the Lord would not have any matter treated in this way among the church members of the Seventh-day Adventist denomination. His people are to carry on their business transactions in a way altogether different from the way in which business matters are carried on by worldlings. In every case we are to act according to a high, holy, sanctified rectitude. Not one vestige of oppression or selfishness is to come in to any of our churches. All business transactions are to be performed in accordance with the law given by the great Ruler of the universe. We are to show no unrighteousness in judgment; and before any man who is in a responsible position shall feel at liberty to carry out a business transaction, he should inquire: Is this transaction of such a character that I shall not be ashamed to have it appear in the day of judgment, when the law in the ark shall be brought forth and my deeds compared with the words the Lord gave to Moses while he was forty days in the mount? Is this transaction according to the ten holy precepts engraved by the finger of Omnipotence? It is best to make this inquiry now before the words of (Revelation 22:10-12) shall be spoken. This instruction has been given me on similar occasions when the law of Jehovah has been discarded because the man who moves unjustly is sustained by the lawyer’s interpretation of the law. There is a law that shall judge every man according to God’s standard. His holy precepts are without a flaw.Revelation 22:10-13

I. Shut-Door Views From 1844 to 1852
1EGWLM 42.2
The longstanding Millerite pre-1844-disappointment belief on the shut door originated with William Miller. He first published his view in the seventh lecture of his 1836 Evidence From Scripture. He referenced the parable of the ten virgins in Matthew 25 and the close of probation language in Revelation 22:11.2William Miller, Evidence From Scripture and History of the Second Coming of Christ About the Year 1843 (Troy, N.Y.: Kemble & Hooper, 1836), pp. 97, 98. Millerites generally believed that probation would close for the world just before the second coming of Jesus. In October, soon after Miller accepted the autumn 1844 date for the fulfillment of the 2300 days, he concluded that probation had already closed.3William Miller, “Brother Miller’s Letter, on the Seventh Month,” Midnight Cry, Oct. 12, 1844, p. 122; idem, “Letter From William Miller,” Advent Herald, Nov. 27, 1844, p. 127. Until early in 1845 he continued to believe that “God in His providence has shut the door; we can only stir one another up to be patient. … We are living in the time specified by Malachi 3:18, also Daniel 12:10, and Revelation 22:10-13.”4William Miller, “Letter From Bro. Miller,” Advent Herald, Dec. 11, 1844, p. 142; see also idem, “Letter From Mr. Miller,” Advent Herald, Feb. 12, 1845, pp. 2, 3. The last text, “He that is unjust, let him be unjust still: and he which is filthy, let him be filthy still: and he that is righteous, let him be righteous still: and he that is holy, let him be holy still” (verse 11), is a clear reference to the close of probation. Miller held to this view much longer than his closest associate and publicist, Joshua V. Himes. Miller’s position undoubtedly gave strength to the shut-door movement and contributed to the schism that developed among Millerites.Revelation 22:10-17

The great missionary spirit of the church is to be aroused. But the Lord Jesus comes forth yet once again to speak to John, and present the missionary work to be done in our world. He sees that the message, the last message of warning, is not thoroughly understood. The angel with the everlasting gospel did not awaken the people to move them to action. He came personally to John and announced to him the missionary work to be done. [Revelation 22:10-17, quoted.]—Manuscript 130, 1901.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 15 (1900)

Here is set forth the work of God’s ministers who give the last message of warning to the world. There is to be a power in the gospel ministry. The three angels’ messages are to be combined, giving their threefold light to the world. In the Revelation, John says, “I saw another angel come down from heaven, having great power; and the earth was lightened with his glory. And he cried mightily with a strong voice, saying, Babylon the great is fallen, is fallen, and is become the habitation of devils, and a cage of every unclean and hateful bird. ... And I heard another voice from heaven, saying, Come out of her, my people, that ye be not partakers of her sins, and that ye partake not of her plagues. For her sins have reached unto heaven, and God hath remembered her iniquities.” [Revelation 18:1, 2, 4, 5.] This represents the giving of the last and threefold message of warning to the world. He sees that the message, the last message of warning, is not thoroughly understood. The angel with the everlasting gospel did not awaken the people to move them to action to satisfy the yearning compassion of infinite love. He came personally to John and announced to him the missionary work to be done. “And he saith unto me, Seal not the sayings of the prophecy of this book: For the time is at hand. He that is unjust, let him be unjust still: and he which is filthy, let him be filthy still: and he that is righteous, let him be righteous still; and he that is holy, let him be holy still. And, behold, I come quickly; and my reward is with me, to give every man according as his work shall be. I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end, the first and the last. Blessed are they that do his commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city. For without are dogs, and sorcerers, and whoremongers, and murderers, and idolaters, and whosoever loveth and maketh a lie. I Jesus have sent mine angel to testify unto you these things in the churches. I am the root and offspring of David, and the bright and morning star. The Spirit and the bride say, Come. And let him that heareth say, Come. And let him that is athirst come. And whosoever will, let him take the water of life freely.” [Revelation 22:10-17.]Revelation 22:10-21

I spoke again to those assembled Thursday night. Quite a large number of those not of our faith were present. I had a very solemn testimony to bear them in regard to the third angel’s message—the proclamation we are now to make to the world. This message combines the first and second and binds it up with the third. This brings us into a large field where we are brought down to the closing scenes of this earth’s history. The great and last warfare is between the two classes—those who keep the commandments of God and those who make void the law of God. Revelation 2:8; 3:1-5, 9-12; 22:10-21.10LtMs, Ms 55, 1895, par. 16
Here is our work—to lift up the standard of truth before the people. While the teachers should be proclaiming the last message of mercy given to our world, they will be teaching fables to counteract the message of truth which all who love God and keep His commandments are to declare. When the third angel’s message closes, mercy no longer pleads for the guilty inhabitants of the earth. The people of God have accomplished their work. They have received “the latter rain,” “the refreshing from the presence of the Lord,” and they are prepared for the trying hour before them. Angels are hastening to and fro in heaven. An angel returning from the earth announces that his work is done; the final test has been brought upon the world, and all who have proved themselves loyal to the divine precepts have received “the seal of the living God.” Then Jesus ceases His intercession in the sanctuary above. He lifts His hands and with a loud voice says, “It is done;” and all the angelic host lay off their crowns as He makes the solemn announcement: “He that is unjust, let him be unjust still: and he which is filthy, let him be filthy still: and he that is righteous, let him be righteous still: and he that is holy, let him be holy still.” Revelation 22:11. With the light on the third message they also received light on the sanctuary and its cleansing, by which they understood thatthe antitypical work of the day of atonement, which was accomplished in the most holy place, was that which was pointed out by the message which they had given. They saw that there were two vails or doors in the temple of God; Hebrews 9:3; and that at that time one was shut and the other was opened. With earnest zeal and new hope they preached these truths, and urged their fellowmen to seek an entrance by faith into the most holy place within the second vail, where our great High Priest is gone to blot out the sins of all his faithful ones, from Abel to the present time. Their faith was in an open door which no man can shut until the work therein is fully done. In the work of inviting sinners to come to this open door, they continue until the present time; and this will be their work until Jesus himself shall proclaim, “He that is unjust, let him be unjust still;” Revelation 22:11; that is, until probation is closed and the ministry of the gospel is ended. The Story of Redemption

How different from this spirit is the feeling of indifference and contempt that has been manifested by some in ----- toward J and those who have been affected by his influence. If ever the transforming grace of God was needed, it is needed in this church. In judging and condemning a brother, they have undertaken to do a work that God never put into their hands. A hardness of heart, a censorious, condemnatory spirit that would destroy individuality and independence, has been woven into their Christian experience, and they have lost the love of Jesus out of their hearts. Could that transported, unready one, mingle with the heavenly throng, participate in their songs, and receive the high purity, the exalted spiritual, transporting, glory that emanates from God and the Lamb? Oh, no! Their probation was lengthened for years that they might learn the language of heaven, that they might be “partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.” [2 Peter 1:4.] But they have had a selfish business of their own to engage the powers of their mind and the energies of their being. They could not afford to serve God unreservedly and make this a business. Worldly enterprises must come first and take the best of their powers, and a transient thought is devoted to God. Are such to be transformed after the final decision: “He that is holy, let him be holy still,” “he which is filthy, let him remain so forever”? All earthly honor is perishable, all earthly treasures valueless when we are passing from this life. There will be nothing enduring but the heavenly treasure, and the favor of God will be more valuable than choice gold. There is time now to prepare for the future immortal life. It will not answer to neglect the preparation essential for our heavenly home. But many will be found wanting in that great day. The precious hours of probation will have passed by unimproved, and when it is too late the mournful cry will be heard, The harvest is passed, the summer is ended, and my soul is not saved. When the righteous Judge shall proclaim the destiny of all fixed—“He which is filthy, let him be filthy still: ... and he that is holy, let him be holy still” [Revelation 22:11]—it will be a time when the most careless, the most trifling, will come to their senses and discern that the truly wise were those who loved God and kept His commandments.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 4 (1883 - 1886)

I am alarmed for our ministers who are hardening their consciences by continuing a course of sin. I fear that they will continue to fall under temptation until the word shall go forth: “He that is holy let him be holy still, and he that is filthy let him be filthy still.” [Revelation 22:11.] I tell you that there must be a thorough revival among us. There must be a converted ministry. There must be confessions, repentance, and conversions. Many who are preaching the Word need the transforming grace of Christ in their hearts. They should let nothing stand in the way of their making thorough work before it shall be forever too late. Christ is coming. His judgments are abroad in the earth. And that God who is ever present, who was a silent witness to the godless, sacrilegious feast of Belshazzar, whose hand traced the characters upon the wall, is present where you think no eye seeth. Had you, Eld. Waggoner, an elder of the church, looked up, you would have seen yourself a spectacle to God and to the pure angels who veil their faces and turn away from your pollution of soul and body. My words seem tame as I pen them when I think of the wonderful truths we profess and the great light that shines upon us from the Word of God. The Judge of all the earth is standing before the door, and every case must pass in solemn review before Him. I inquire how can anyone with this light shining upon him dare in thought or word to deny the Lord God who hath bought him. Make haste, my brother, to cleanse your hands. Jesus is still pleading as your Intercessor. Commence the work of forsaking your sins without delay. Do not rest till you find pardon, for no soul can enter the paradise of God who has a single spot or stain in his character. Make thorough work for eternity.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 10 (1895)

How can we find language to express our deep interest and desire that every soul should awake and go to work in the Master’s vineyard! “Occupy,” says Christ, “till I come.” It may be but a few years until your life history shall close, but you must occupy till then. When the fiat goes forth, “He that is unjust, let him be unjust still: and he which is filthy, let him be filthy still: and he that is righteous, let him be righteous still: and he that is holy, let him be holy still” (Revelation 22:11), then there will be no more occasion to labor for souls.—Manuscript 13, 1895, 1-3. Satan is taking possession of the human family, and very soon in heaven it will be said, “It is done. He that is holy let him be holy still, and he that is filthy, let him be filthy still.” [See Revelation 16:17; 22:11.] That is just the testimony that will be borne. And we want that every soul should be in a position that they shall be where there is no guile found in their mouth. They will not lie to get the advantage of their neighbor, to get their property to undermine them.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 21 (1906)

I am entrusted with the message, Time is very short. Look at the world—its wickedness increasing as in the days of Noah. The hour to close the ark came at last; and then, after all the signs of the animals’ coming without a visible leader, two by two, into the ark, the note was given, Close the ark. And the inhabitants of the old world perished. Humble ourselves we must, under the mighty hand of God. No man can serve two masters, although men will be so blinded by Satan’s peace and safety theories that the last call of mercy will not be heard. “He that is holy, let him be holy still,” and “he which is filthy, let him be filthy still.” [Revelation 22:11.] Wake up, wake up. Get ready, lest it will be everlastingly too late.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 21 (1906)

Oh God, the word is about to be pronounced: “He that is unjust, let him be unjust still: and he which is filthy, let him be filthy still: and he that is righteous, let him be righteous still: and he that is holy, let him be holy still.” [Revelation 22:11.] Awful words to hear, to those that are unready!Jesus, Name Above All Names

When Christ shall cease His work as Mediator in humanity’s behalf, then this time of trouble will begin. Then the case of every soul will have been decided, and there will be no atoning blood to cleanse from sin. When Jesus leaves His position as humanity’s intercessor before God, the solemn announcement is made, “He that is unjust, let him be unjust still: and he which is filthy, let him be filthy still: and he that is righteous, let him be righteous still: and he that is holy, let him be holy still” (Revelation 22:11). Then the restraining Spirit of God is withdrawn from the earth. As Jacob was threatened with death by his angry brother, so the people of God will be in peril from the wicked who are seeking to destroy them. And as the patriarch wrestled all night for deliverance from the hand of Esau, so the righteous will cry to God day and night for deliverance from the enemies that surround them.Manuscript Releases, vol. 12 [Nos. 921-999]

We must have a greater nearness to God. Much less of self and much more of Jesus Christ and His grace must be brought into our everyday life. We are living in an important period of this world’s history. The end of all things is at hand; the sands of time are fast running out; soon in heaven it will be said: “It is done.” “He that is holy, let him be holy still,” “he which is filthy, let him be filthy still” [Revelation 21:6; 22:11].Maranatha

CCh 349.1
When the work of the investigative judgment closes, the destiny of all will have been decided for life or death. Probation is ended a short time before the appearing of the Lord in the clouds of heaven. Christ in the Revelation, looking forward to that time, declares: “He that is unjust, let him be unjust still: and he which is filthy, let him be filthy still: and he that is righteous let him be righteous still: and he that is holy, let him be holy still. And, behold, I come quickly; and My reward is with Me, to give every man according as his work shall be.” Revelation 22:11, 12.Ye Shall Receive Power

Those professed believers who come up to the time of trouble unprepared, will, in their despair, confess their sins before the world in words of burning anguish, while the wicked exult over their distress. The case of all such is hopeless. When Christ stands up, and leaves the most holy place, the time of trouble commences, the case of every soul is decided, and there will be no atoning blood to cleanse from sin and pollution. As Jesus leaves the most holy, He speaks in tones of decision and kingly authority: “He that is unjust, let him be unjust still: and he which is filthy, let him be filthy still: and he that is righteous, let him be righteous still: and he that is holy, let him be holy still. And, behold, I come quickly; and my reward is with me, to give every man according as his work shall be” (Revelation 22:11, 12).Spiritual Gifts, vol. 4b

The great original lie which he told to Eve in Eden, “Thou shalt not surely die,” was the first sermon ever preached on the immortality of the soul. This sermon was crowned with success, and terrible results followed. He has brought minds to receive that sermon as truth, and ministers preach it, sing it, and pray it. No literal Devil, and probation after the coming of Christ, are fast becoming popular fables. The Scriptures plainly declare every person’s destiny forever fixed at the coming of the Lord. The sweet voice of mercy will be heard no more. This is why Satan is making such mighty efforts to secure men and women in his snare. He has come down with great power, knowing that his time is short. His special work now is to secure professing Christians in his ranks, that he may through them allure and destroy souls. The enemy is playing the game of life for every soul. He is working to remove everything of a spiritual nature from us, and in the place of the precious graces of Christ to crowd our hearts with all the evil traits of the carnal nature,—hatred, evil surmising, jealousy, love of the world, love of self, love of pleasure, and pride of life. We need to be fortified against the incoming of the foe, who is working with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish; for if we are not watchful and prayerful, these evils will enter the heart, and crowd out all that is good.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 10 (1895)

Far better would it be for workers to take smaller work, and to go about it slowly and humbly, wearing the yoke of Christ, and bearing his burdens, than to devote years in preparation for a large work, and then fail to bring sons and daughters to God, fail to have any trophies to lay at the feet of Jesus. Men and women are hovering altogether too long in Battle Creek. God calls them, but they do not hear his voice. Fields are neglected, and that means that minds are unenlightened. Corrupt seed is being rapidly sown in the hearts of our youth, and great practical truths must be brought in contact with the children and youth, for truth is powerful.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 10 (1895)

To live the law of God means to reveal the holiness of God’s character in every action of the law. In the lives of many of our teachers and ministers, this holiness is sadly lacking. With many, the law has become a dead letter. To those who, instead of allowing their lives to be controlled by the law of righteousness and truth, are being swayed by hereditary and cultivated traits of character, I am given this message: There is no time to lose. The end of all things is at hand. Soon from heaven will go forth the decree, “He that is righteous, let him be righteous still: and he that is holy, let him be holy still. Those who do not beseech men to get ready without a moment’s delay will find that their candlestick will be removed out of its place. “I Jesus have sent mine angel to testify unto you these things in the churches.” We must speak forth the truth, we must let our light shine forth in clear, steady rays, lest some soul shall stumble and fall because our light is eclipsed. Jesus says, “I am the root and off-spring of David, and the bright and morning star. And the Spirit and the bride say Come. And let him that heareth say Come. And let him that is athirst come. And whosoever will, let him take the water of life freely.” [Revelation 22:16, 17.]Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 13 (1898)

God calls upon those who stand as soldiers under His bloodstained banner to go to work. He will give increased light to those who love the light, to those who seek for the truth with keen perception. In the Holy Spirit, celestial aid is given to every soul. Heavenly inspiration is still imparted to God’s people. God would have those who know the truth impart that which they have gained in Christian experience. The time is coming when it will be too late to use the light we may have. Then the decree will go forth: “Let him that is unjust, be unjust still, and let him that is filthy be filthy still: and he that is righteous, let him be righteous still, and he that is holy, let him be holy still. And, behold, I come quickly, and my reward is with me, to give every man according as his work shall be. I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end, the first and the last. Blessed are they that do his commandments, for they shall have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city.” [Revelation 22:11-14.]13LtMs, Ms 4, 1898, par. 8
God’s people must give to the world a representation of the character of Christ. A message has come from God which must be proclaimed: “I Jesus have sent mine angel to testify unto you these things in the churches. I am the root and the offspring of David, and the bright and morning star. The Spirit and the Bride say, Come. And let him that heareth say, Come. And let him that is athirst come. And whosoever will let him take of the water of life freely.” [Verses 16, 17.]13LtMs, Ms 4, 1898, par. 9
Those who are of a contrite heart will receive the message from heaven, and will repeat the words of invitation, “Whosoever will let him take of the water of life freely.” [Verse 17.] Christ called the attention of the woman of Samaria from the inferior gifts of life to those things that are eternal, saying, “If thou knewest the gift of God, and who it is that saith to thee, Give me to drink, thou wouldest have asked of him, and he would have given thee living water. ... Whosoever shall drink of this water shall thirst again; but whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst: but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water, springing up into everlasting life.” [John 4:10, 13, 14.]Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 21 (1906)

By the king’s examination of the guests at the feast is represented a work of judgment. The guests at the gospel feast are those who profess to serve God, those whose names are written in the book of life. But not all who profess to be Christians are true disciples. Before the final reward is given, it must be decided who are fitted to share the inheritance of the righteous. This decision must be made prior to the second coming of Christ in the clouds of heaven; for when He comes, His reward is with Him, “to give every man according as his work shall be.” Revelation 22:12. Before His coming, then, the character of every man’s work will have been determined, and to every one of Christ’s followers the reward will have been apportioned according to his deeds.Sons and Daughters of God

By His own humiliation and agony, by His life of toil and His death of shame, Christ has paid for the service of all who have taken His name and profess to be His servants. All are under deepest obligation to improve every capability for the work of winning souls to Him. “Ye are not your own,” He says; “for ye are bought with a price;” therefore glorify God by a life of service that will win men and women from sin to righteousness. 1 Corinthians 6:19, 20. In the typical system, which was a shadow of the sacrifice and priesthood of Christ, the cleansing of the sanctuary was the last service performed by the high priest in the yearly round of ministration. It was the closing work of the atonement—a removal or putting away of sin from Israel. It prefigured the closing work in the ministration of our High Priest in heaven, in the removal or blotting out of the sins of His people, which are registered in the heavenly records. This service involves a work of investigation, a work of judgment; and it immediately precedes the coming of Christ in the clouds of heaven with power and great glory; for when He comes, every case has been decided. Says Jesus: “My reward is with Me, to give every man according as his work shall be.” Revelation 22:12. The “Well done” will be pronounced upon those only who have done well. Every man is to be rewarded “according as his work shall be.” [Revelation 22:12.] We want an active ministry,—men of prayer, who will wrestle with God as did Jacob, saying, “I will not let thee go, except thou bless me.” [Genesis 32:26.] If we obtain the victor’s crown, we must stretch every nerve, and exercise every power. The Lord has graciously spared my life thus long and I am improving in health, but how long I shall be permitted to have a part in carrying forward the work I know not. I would be true and faithful as long as my life is spared. Time is passing so swiftly, and the great crisis is before us. We are really to have a part, if life is spared a little longer, in the closing scenes of this earth’s history. “Write, Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord from henceforth: yea, saith the Spirit, that they may rest from their labors; and their works do follow them.” [Revelation 14:13.] The time passes so rapidly. “And, Behold, I come quickly; and my reward is with me, to give every man according as his work shall be.” [Revelation 22:12.] Now is our sowing time. The reaping time will be ere long. Let us now, more than ever before, make the Lord God of Israel our trust. In proportion as the heart is more and more sanctified by grace and filled with the active love of God, the application of great truths will be brought and interwoven with little things, and there will be with the children of God a consistent course of obedience. We will find in our experience that the yoke of Christ is easy and His burden is light. The heart submissive to God’s will and to God’s way in even little things will bring a peace, a restfulness, a trustfulness in God [so] that we continually rejoice.Manual for Canvassers

Some flatter themselves that the Lord will give them another opportunity, that there will be a second probation. Fatal delusion! Just now, day by day, hour by hour, we are building for the last great day. We are trading on our Lord’s money, and at His coming He will reckon with us, and we shall have to give an account of what we have done with His goods. As responsible beings we are working for time and for eternity, making our records in the books of heaven, and preparing our reward or punishment. Our reward will be proportionate to our work. “My reward is with Me,” Christ declares, “to give every man according as his work shall be.” Revelation 22:12. Our whole life work is connected with the second appearing of Christ to our world. He says, “Behold, I come quickly; and my reward is with me, to give every man according as his work shall be.” Revelation 22:12. Solemn thought. The Lord Jesus loves us. He wants us to be partakers of His trials and sufferings, that we may be partakers with Him of His glory. They that suffer with Him shall reign with Him in His kingdom.12LtMs, Ms 179, 1897, par. 18
If there was ever a time for real earnestness and zeal it is now, and there should be no sleeping upon the enchanted ground from this time onward. There is no excuse for our stupor. The church should consider, every individual member, that the rewards in the future kingdom are proportioned according to every man’s work, of what sort it is—all that he has done heartily unto the Lord, or what he has not done because of his unbelief and worldliness and indolence. “My reward is with me, to give to every man according as his work shall be.” [Verse 12.]Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 12 (1897)

And bear in mind that the rewards of the future kingdom will be proportionate to the work done in the hours of probation. “Behold I come quickly, and my reward is with me, to give to every man according as his work shall be.” [Revelation 22:12.]Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 13 (1898)

The unused talent of the slothful servant was brought into account just as much as were those that had been used, and had increased by use. It was God’s money that was withheld. Our lifework is bound up with the second advent of our Lord. We are trading with our Lord’s money, and on His return He will reckon with His servants, to know how much every man has gained by trading. The reckoning is to be as individual as was the bestowment of the talents, and proportionate results will be expected from their use. “My reward is with me, to give every man according as his work shall be.” [Revelation 22:12.]Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 14 (1899)

We are trading now upon our Lord’s goods. When He returns He will reckon with [His] servants to see how much every man has improved his God-entrusted gifts by blessing humanity. Results proportionate to the talents given will be required, and to every faithful, self-denying Christian is given a reward proportionate to his work. “My reward is with me,” Christ declares, “to give every man according as his work shall be.” [Revelation 22:12.] It is positively essential that we individually abound in the work of the Lord, knowing that our labor is not in vain in the Lord. Everything is measured and accurately estimated by the Lord’s golden scales. Thank God it is not left for man to pass his judgment upon any man. All judgment is given into the hands of His Son, Jesus Christ, and He make no mistake.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 15 (1900)

My brother, we are not our own. We have been bought with a price. If we cooperate with God we can advance His kingdom. Neither you nor I nor any other soul should feel at liberty to underrate our talents, be they many or few. God demands a faithful return of His entrusted goods. He calls upon us to enter His school and learn day by day that we have a work to do. No soul is to be an idler. If we fail to use God’s gifts aright, how will we answer Him when He calls upon us for an account of our stewardship? “Behold, I come quickly,” unexpectedly, Christ says, “and my reward is with me, to give every man according as his works shall be.” [Revelation 22:12.] The books of heaven bear the record of every life. Men will be judged by the way in which they have treated their fellow men and the way in which they have treated God, whose they are by creation and by redemption. Unless man keeps his heart with all diligence, he will rob God of His rightful claims. He will keep the Lord’s portion, the tithe, upon which the Lord has laid His hand, saying, It is mine. The tithe is the Lord’s money, by which He designs to sustain His work in the world. Those who keep back the tithe are robbing God of that which He has declared to be His, to be used in advancing His work.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 16 (1901)

So then, because thou art lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spew thee out of my mouth. Because thou sayest, I am rich, and increased with goods, and have need of nothing; and knowest not that thou art wretched, and miserable, and poor, and blind, and naked. I counsel thee to buy of me gold tried in the fire, that thou mayest be rich, and white raiment, that thou mayest be clothed, and that the shame of thy nakedness do not appear, and anoint thine eyes with eyesalve that thou mayest see. By His own humiliation and agony, by His life of toil and His death of shame, Christ has paid for the service of all who take His name and profess to be His servants. All are under deepest obligation to improve every capability for the work of winning souls for Him. “Ye are not your own,” He says, “for ye are bought with a price;” therefore glorify God by a life of service that will win men and women from sin to righteousness. I have words to speak to our people in the southern field. Do not confine your work in any one place. The Lord will provide for the carrying forward of the work in many places. The work that Brethren Staines and Bralliar have begun is not to be in any way discouraged. The talents of many workers are to be used wisely and faithfully. “My reward is with Me, to give every man according as his work shall be,” the Saviour declares. [Revelation 22:12.] Let the workers remember that their final reward will be in proportion to their development of Christian character. The Lord expects interest on the talents He has entrusted to His servants—interest in proportion to the gifts He has bestowed. The Three Angels’ Messages

A correct view of the unconscious state of the dead was therefore seen to be closely connected to the biblical concept of a pre-Advent judgment, since eternal rewards are not bestowed at death but at the end of time. “And behold, I am coming quickly, and My reward is with Me, to give to every one according to his work” (Revelation 22:12, NKJV). “For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, that each one may receive the things done in the body, according to what he has done, whether good or bad” (2 Corinthians 5:10, NKJV).Manuscript Releases, vol. 20 [Nos. 1420-1500]

God is true. Christ says, “Behold, I come quickly; and My reward is with Me, to give every man according as his work shall be” [Revelation 22:12]. He “will render to every man according to his deeds: To them who by patient continuance in well doing seek for glory and honour and immortality.” He will render “eternal life: But unto them that are contentious, and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness,” He will render “indignation and wrath, tribulation and anguish, upon every soul of man that doeth evil, of the Jew first, and also of the Gentile; but glory, honor, and peace, to every man that worketh good, to the Jew first, and also to the Gentile: for there is no respect of persons with God” [Romans 2:6-11].—Manuscript 38, 1895, 1-22. Will the students of our schools study, and endeavor to copy the life and character of Him who came down from heaven to show them what they must be, if they would enter the kingdom of God? I have borne you a message of the near coming of the Son of God in the clouds of heaven with power and great glory. I have not presented before you any definite time, but have repeated to you the injunction of Christ himself, to watch unto prayer, “For in such an hour as ye think not, the Son of man cometh.” [Matthew 24:44.] The warning has come echoing down the ages to our time, “Behold, I come quickly; and my reward is with me to give every man according as his work shall be. It will not be a long period now before we shall have filled the years of our probationary time. If we do not rest in the grave, we shall see the Saviour coming in the clouds of heaven with power and great glory. If we are sleeping, and are found obedient children to the commandments of God, we shall have part in the first resurrection, with those upon whom the second death shall have no power. Christ says to His people at this time, “And, behold, I come quickly; and My reward is with Me, to give every man according as his work shall be. I linked these sayings of Jesus with the testimony of John on the Isle of Patmos, who says that he is our “brother and companion in tribulation, and in the kingdom and patience of Jesus Christ,” and “was in the isle called Patmos for the word of God and the testimony of Jesus Christ.” [Revelation 1:9.] John has voiced the words of Christ for our benefit. “And, behold, I come quickly; and my reward is with me, to give every man according as his work shall be. I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end, the first and the last. Blessed are they which do his commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city.” [Revelation 22:12-14.] The people seem to have received a solemn impression. After the meeting closed, a woman came up to the stand, and with a Bible open in her hand began to declare that we were not under the law but under grace. “Yes,” I said, “if we keep the commandments of God we are not under the bondage of the law, but we are free.”Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 13 (1898)

In which party do we wish to be found? “Behold, I come quickly,” Christ says, “and my reward is with me, to give every man according as his work shall be. But what is the future of those who have been disobedient to the commandments of God? They are left outside the Holy City. “For without are dogs, and sorcerers, and whoremongers, and murderers, and idolaters, and whosoever loveth and maketh a lie.” [Verse 15.] Who are living and making a lie so decidedly and persistently as all those who proclaim the law of God abolished? [This was] the lie of Satan, [when] he put his voice into the serpent and repeated his lies against God. Wonderful was the result, for the hitherto sinless pair became sinners because they believed the words of Satan in the place of the words of God.10LtMs, Ms 61b, 1895, par. 30
Those who, for the sake of money, will sell their loyalty to God for a world full of silver and gold will have betrayed Christ as did Judas, and will have to receive according to their works. God is not mocked. His holy law written in the heart, revealed in steadfast obedience, decides every character for life or for death. But the words of God and of His Son, Jesus Christ, are sure and steadfast. “Blessed are they that do His commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city. ... I Jesus have sent mine angel to testify unto you these things in the churches.” [Verses 14, 16.] Who hears the voice of the angel bearing the message of mercy and warnings to the world? Those who listen to the messengers who voice the words of the angel in a decided testimony, upholding and vindicating the law of God, showing who are the obedient, are blessed, while the transgressor will be found outside the city of God [with those who say] that it is an indifferent matter whether men keep the law of God or break it. They bind up their interest with them to obtain special advantages and make no difference between him that serveth God and him that serveth Him not. Unfaithful men’s souls will be lost because they did not do their duty.10LtMs, Ms 61b, 1895, par. 32

There were present the school teachers of Bismark, and there was a woman with a large family of boys in attendance—unbelieving, and we hope that the seed sown may spring up and bear fruit to the glory of God. I presented the keeping of the ten commandments of God as the sure evidence of our love to Jesus Christ as is plainly specified in John 14. Then I linked these sayings of Christ to John on the isle of Patmos, “who also am your brother and companion in tribulation, and in the kingdom and patience of Jesus Christ, was in the isle of Patmos for the word of God, and for the testimony of Jesus Christ.” [Revelation 1:9.] John has voiced the words of Christ for our benefit. Revelation [22]:12-17. A very solemn impression was upon the people. After the meeting closed a woman came up and began to declare, with the Bible in her hand, we were not under the law but under grace. “Yes,” I said, “If we keep the commandments of God, we are not under the bondage of the law, but we are free.”Revelation 22:12-18

The whole earth is to be lighted with the glory of that other angel who follows the third angel, and whose message unites with His. Here is the last call to mystic Babylon, the churches that have been corrupt. In these religious bodies is to be heard the last call, the warning, “Babylon the great is fallen, is fallen, and is become the habitation of devils, and the hold of every foul spirit, and a cage of every unclean and hateful bird. ... Come out of her, my people, that ye be not partakers of her sins, and that ye receive not of her plagues.” [Verses 1, 2, 4.] Read Revelation 22:12-18.Revelation 22:12-20

“Behold,” Christ declares, “I come quickly; and My reward is with Me, to give every man according as his work shall be.” God calls upon us to voice the words, “Even so, come, Lord Jesus.” [Revelation 22:12, 20.] God will do much more for His people if they will have faith in Him. Infidelity is stalking abroad through the land. Satan has laid his plans to undermine our faith in the history of the cause and work of God. I am deeply in earnest as I write this. Satan is working with men in prominent positions to sweep away the foundations of our faith. Shall we allow this to be done, brethren?Revelation 22:12-21

We must through faith accept the truth as it is in Jesus. The Bible election is plainly stated in the Word of God. “If ye keep my commandments, ye shall abide in my love; even as I have kept my Father’s commandments, and abide in his love.” [John 15:10.] “If ye love me, keep my commandments.” [John 14:15.] “He that saith, I know him, and keepeth not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him. But whoso keepeth his words, in him verily is the love of God perfected: hereby know we that we are in him.” “And he that keepeth his commandments dwelleth in him, and he in him. And hereby we know that he abideth in us, by the spirit which he hath given us.” [1 John 2:4, 5; 3:24.] (See Revelation 22:12-21.)Revelation 22:13

Man’s efforts <alone> are nothing but worthlessness, but co-operation with Christ means a victory. Of ourselves we have no power to repent of sin. Unless we accept divine aid, we cannot take the first steps toward the Saviour. He says, “I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end” in the salvation of every soul. Have you a tradition that has come down through the ages? Have you such a tradition? Will the baptism sanctify it and make it whole, that by observing it you may save your soul from death? Will it do it? No, decidedly not. Christ says, “I am the true witness.” “I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end, the first and the last.” “Blessed are they that do his commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city.” [Revelation 3:14; 22:13, 14.] I want to be there. Can we afford to say, My father did not keep the commandments, and I think he was right? Well, if your father lived today, and he was a Christian living according to every ray of light, when the light came that the law of God was being transgressed, he would on his knees inquire, Is this so? And then he would have said, “Children, we have made a decided mistake. We have been keeping an institution that has not a single syllable for its sanctity in the Word of God. I am sorry that I have not been a man of the Bible before. I am sorry that I have not seen the precious light of truth. Now it has come to me and I am responsible for it; I do not want to be found a lawbreaker but a subject of the King. God’s law is hated in this age of the world’s history because it condemns sin in the flesh. But the love of God dwells in the heart of the obedient. Adam lost beautiful Eden through disobedience. He was cut off from access to the tree of life. Angels guarded it with flaming swords, which turned every way, that in their disobedience men should not eat of it, and thus become immortal sinners. Men are now on test and trial. “I am Alpha and Omega,” Christ declares, “the beginning and the end, the first and the last.” “Blessed are they that do his commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city.” [Revelation 22:13, 14.] The disobedient have no place in this city. Rebellion can never enter there. Only the loyal and the true, who keep the commandments of God, shall have a right to the tree of life, and enter the heavenly city.Revelation 22:13-17

The voice of the Son of God called forth the sleeping saints, clothed with glorious immortality. The living saints were changed in a moment, and were caught up with them into the cloudy chariot. It looked all over glorious as it rolled upward. On either side of the chariot were wings, and beneath it wheels. And as the chariot rolled upward, the wheels cried, “Holy,” and the wings, as they moved, cried, “Holy,” and the retinue of holy angels around the cloud cried, “Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty” And the saints in the cloud cried, “Glory! Alleluia!” And the chariot rolled upward to the holy city. Jesus threw open the gates of the golden city, and led us in. Here we were made welcome, for we had kept “the commandments of God,” and had a “right to the tree of life.” Revelation 14:12; 22:14.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 17 (1902)

God wants you to receive the wisdom that He has for you. He wants you to be Bible students and Bible believers, living in obedience to the words, “Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy strength, and with all thy mind; and thy neighbor as thyself.” [Luke 10:27.] Then He can bestow on you the power of His truth. Then He can mold and fashion you after the divine similitude. Living in conformity to Christ’s will, you will be changed into His likeness. You will grow up into Him, and at last the pearly gates of the holy city will for you swing back on their glittering hinges, and you will enter to hear the words, “Blessed are they that do His commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city.” [Revelation 22:14.] In your hands will be placed a golden harp, and touching its strings, you will join with the redeemed host in filling all heaven with songs of praise to God and His Son.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 17 (1902)

There was no arbitrary choice on the part of God by which Esau was shut out from the blessings of salvation. The gifts of His grace through Christ are free to all. There is no election but one’s own by which any may perish. God has set forth in His word the conditions upon which every soul will be elected to eternal life—obedience to His commandments, through faith in Christ. God has elected a character in harmony with His law, and anyone who shall reach the standard of His requirement will have an entrance into the kingdom of glory. Christ Himself said, “He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life.” John 3:36. “Not everyone that saith unto Me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of My Father which is in heaven.” Matthew 7:21. And in the Revelation He declares, “Blessed are they that do His commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city.” Revelation 22:14. As regards man’s final salvation, this is the only election brought to view in the word of God.Reflecting Christ

But not so did prophets and apostles regard the holy law of God. Said David: “I will walk at liberty: for I seek thy precepts” (Psalm 119:45). The apostle James, who wrote after the death of Christ, refers to the Decalogue as “the royal law” and “the perfect law of liberty” (James 2:8; 1:25). And the revelator, half a century after the crucifixion, pronounces a blessing upon them “that do His commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city” (Revelation 22:14).Sons and Daughters of God

Christ is the author and finisher of our faith, and when we yield to His hand we shall steadily grow in grace and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour. We shall make progress until we reach the full stature of men and women in Christ. Faith works by love, and purifies the soul, expelling the love of sin that leads to rebellion against, and transgression of, the law of God.... Through the agency of the Holy Spirit the character is transformed and the mind and will of the human agent are brought into perfect conformity to the divine will, and this is conformity to the divine standard of righteousness. To those who are thus transformed Christ will say, “Blessed are they that do his commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city” (Revelation 22:14).6The Youth’s Instructor, February 17, 1898.That I May Know Him

How precious to those who are losing their loved of this world are their faith and hope in the promises of God which open before them the future immortal life! Their hopes may fasten upon unseen realities of the future world. Christ has risen from the dead the first fruits. Hope and faith strengthen the soul to pass through the dark shadows of the tomb, in full faith of coming forth to immortal life in the morning of the resurrection. The Paradise of God, the home of the blessed! There all tears shall be wiped from off all faces! When Christ shall come the second time, to be “admired in all them that believe” (2 Thessalonians 1:10), death shall be swallowed up in victory, and there shall be no more sickness, no more sorrow, no more death! A rich promise is given to us: “Blessed are they that do his commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city” (Revelation 22:14). Is not this promise rich and comforting to those who love God? 25The Review and Herald, October 11, 1887.EGW Writings — Ellen G. White. Ellen G. White Estate · all rights reserved

“For I testify unto every man that heareth the words of the prophecy of this book, if any man shall add unto these things, God shall add unto him the plagues that are written in this book: And if any man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part out of the book of life, and out of the Holy City, and from the things which are written in this book.” Revelation 22:18, 19.EW 143.2
The remnant of the gospel church will have the gifts. War will be waged against them because they keep the commandments of God and have the testimony of Jesus Christ. (Revelation 12:17.) In Revelation 19:10, the testimony of Jesus is defined to be the spirit of prophecy. Said the angel, “I am thy fellow servant, and of thy brethren that have the testimony of Jesus.” In Revelation 22:9, he repeats the same in substance, as follows: “I am thy fellow servant, and of thy brethren the prophets.” From the comparison we see the force of the expression, “The testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy.” But the testimony of Jesus includes all the gifts of that one Spirit. Says Paul: “I thank my God always on your behalf, for the grace of God which is given you by Jesus Christ; that in everything ye are enriched by Him, in all utterance, and in all knowledge; even as the testimony of Christ was confirmed in you: So that ye come behind in no gift; waiting for the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.” 1 Corinthians 1:4-7. The testimony of Christ was confirmed in the Corinthian church; and what was the result? They came behind in no gift. Are we not justified, then, in the conclusion that when the remnant are fully confirmed in the testimony of Jesus, they will come behind in no gift, waiting for the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ?Spiritual Gifts, vol. 1
