“Be watchful, and strengthen the things which remain, that are ready to die.” [Revelation 3:2.] Here is a duty that we are to perform. When we see one doing wrong, we are to go to him and tell him of the mistakes that he is making. We are not to go to some one else with the report of his wrongdoing. “If thou bring thy gift to the altar,” said Christ, “and there rememberest that thy brother hath aught against thee; leave there thy gift before the altar, and go thy way; first be reconciled to thy brother, and then come and offer thy gift.” [Matthew 5:23, 24.] Shall we not heed these words? Shall we not make earnest efforts to help one another by making straight paths for our feet?19LtMs, Ms 50, 1904, par. 31
In all our dealings, wherever we may be, we are to be perfectly straight forward. We cannot afford to break one of the commandments of God for the sake of worldly gain. Who are we? Christ said to His disciples, “Ye are the salt of the earth; but if the salt have lost its savor, wherewith shall it be salted? It is henceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden underfoot of men.” [Matthew 5:13.]19LtMs, Ms 50, 1904, par. 33
“Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid.” [Verse 14.] We are to stand where the light of truth can shine upon us, and then we are to reflect this to those in darkness. My brethren and sisters, why do you not let your light shine. Why do you withhold from God your offerings of prayer and praise? Why do you not glorify Him? He expects His people to reach the very highest standard of righteousness. They have been given a message of saving truth, and this message they are to give to others. God wants His gospel medical missionaries to stand where He can work through them. He has chosen human beings as His representatives, to make known His power, His goodness, and His love.19LtMs, Ms 50, 1904, par. 34
What we need is the essence of religion in our hearts. “Let your light so shine before men that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.” [Verse 16.] These words show what we are to be in the world. We are not to shut ourselves away from the world, neither are we to mingle with worldlings for selfish pleasure, giving them no reason to think that in dress or deportment we are different from them.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 20 (1905)
Ms 128, 1905

Christ places before us the possibilities that are ours through the covenant of grace. He says, “Ye are the salt of the earth, but if the salt have lost its savor, wherewith shall it be salted. It is henceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden underfoot of men.” [Matthew 5:13.] Unless the grace of Christ is in the heart, unchristlike traits of character will be revealed. Words such as sinners speak will fall from the lips. Uncourteous actions will make the profession as salt that has lost its savor—good for nothing. We are none of us Christians unless we represent Christ. When we show a selfish spirit, we dishonor Christ before the world, and our profession of godliness is only a sham.20LtMs, Ms 128, 1905, par. 2
Christ continues, “Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid. Neither do men light a candle and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick, and it giveth light to all that are in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.” [Verses 14-16.] Christ had recently called fishermen from their boats, saying, “Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men.” [Matthew 4:19.] He was to be their teacher. From Him they were to receive instruction that would encourage and support them in all the trials they would have to bear. Their patient forbearance under provocation would make them a surprise and a wonder to the world. He purposed to give them an education that would make them a great blessing in the world. In ages past there had been men who had been as lights in the time in which they lived. These men were called of God, as Christ had called the fishermen; and they were to those with whom they associated as salt, keeping the world from destruction by revealing the goodness, wisdom, and virtue of true piety.20LtMs, Ms 128, 1905, par. 8
“Therefore if thou bring thy gift to the altar, and there rememberest that thy brother hath ought against thee; leave there thy gift before the altar, and go thy way; first be reconciled to thy brother, and then come and offer thy gift.” [Matthew 5:23, 24.] These words are spoken by the great Teacher, who has purchased us with His own blood. How particular each one should be to follow the directions laid down for the prevention of dissension and strife. When this is done, we shall reveal unbroken unity and a tender, Christlike love that respects and obeys the words of the One who knows the needs of the human soul and how to help us act as children of God.Matthew 5:13-45

Chapter 18—The Healing of the Waters
PK 231.1
The healing of the waters of Jericho was accomplished, not by any wisdom of man, but by the miraculous interposition of God. Those who had rebuilt the city were undeserving of the favor of Heaven; yet He who “maketh His sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sendeth rain on the just and on the unjust,” saw fit in this instance to reveal, through this token of compassion, His willingness to heal Israel of their spiritual maladies. Matthew 5:45.PK 231.4
In casting salt into the bitter spring, Elisha taught the same spiritual lesson imparted centuries later by the Saviour to His disciples when He declared, “Ye are the salt of the earth.” Matthew 5:13. The salt mingling with the polluted spring purified its waters and brought life and blessing where before had been blighting and death. When God compares His children to salt, He would teach them that His purpose in making them the subjects of His grace is that they may become agents in saving others. The object of God in choosing a people before all the world was not only that He might adopt them as His sons and daughters, but that through them the world might receive the grace that bringeth salvation. When the Lord chose Abraham, it was not simply to be the special friend of God, but to be a medium of the peculiar privileges the Lord desired to bestow upon the nations.Matthew 5:13-48

“Ye are the salt of the earth,” Christ declared; “but if the salt have lost its savor, wherewith shall it be salted? it is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden underfoot of men.” [Matthew 5:13.]20LtMs, Ms 14, 1905, par. 10
“Ye are the light of the world; a city that is set on an hill cannot be hid. Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick, and it giveth light unto all that are in the house.” [Verses 14, 15.] Fathers and mothers, let the light of Bible truth shine forth in clear, distinct rays from your home. Do not forget that your home is the school in which you and your children are to gain a preparation for the home above. Let your children have the help that comes from the saving qualities of Christian practice. Let your words be kind and helpful. Let your home be imbued with the influence of the Holy Spirit.20LtMs, Ms 14, 1905, par. 17
Your influence for good is to be far-reaching. “Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.” [Verse 16.] We may live lives that will be ever sending forth the fragrance of goodness and righteousness. We may speak words that strengthen and bless, or words that will stir up strife, arousing hatred and dissension.20LtMs, Ms 14, 1905, par. 18
“Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect.” [Verse 48.] Christ will give the grace if you will give the obedience. “Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you; for every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened. Or what man is there of you, whom is his son ask bread, will he give him a stone? Or if he ask a fish, will he give him a serpent? If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children, how much more shall your Father which is in heaven give good things to them that ask Him?” [Matthew 7:7-11.]Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 8 (1893)

“Looking diligently lest any man fail of the grace of God: lest any root of bitterness springing up trouble you, and thereby many be defiled.” [Verse 15.] The world’s Redeemer full of grace and truth stands saying, “I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life.” [John 14:6.] “Ye are the salt of the earth.” “Ye are the light of the world.” [Matthew 5:13, 14.] All the virtue in the salt is derived from Christ. All the light that shines forth from the human agent must first be received from the Source of all light. Ye are to let your light (not be hid under a bushel) but shine to the world. Thus man fallen is elevated, ennobled, and brought up to the high level of working in Christ’s lines. “Ye are laborers together with God. Ye are God’s husbandry, ye are God’s building.” [1 Corinthians 3:9.]8LtMs, Lt 82, 1893, par. 5
Self must be surrendered to Christ, and then He can mold and fashion the character after His own likeness. “Be ye therefore perfect even as your Father in heaven is perfect.” [Matthew 5:48.] We are to keep Christ as our Pattern ever in view, and by contemplating Christ who gave His life that if we believe in Him we should not perish. We become transformed in character. His own righteousness is imputed unto us. Therefore all virtue, all light, all that is of any value is derived from Christ, and how foolish it is for any man to cherish self-esteem and lift up his soul unto vanity. Christ is everything to us, and if we have His love abiding in our hearts, we shall cultivate love for one another.Matthew 5:14

This afternoon I spoke from “Ye are the light of the world.” [Matthew 5:14.] The congregation was composed mostly of outsiders. This was the best representation we have had of noble women. Not a few, but many, were present. They listened with deep interest, and God gave me freedom in speaking upon experimental godliness. Then Elder Corliss told them he would give a Bible reading, and many remained and asked questions. His subject was the coming of the Lord. The people seemed anxious to continue the service. He asked if they would be pleased to have another Bible reading the next day, and all hands were immediately raised.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 9 (1894)

What riches, what treasures, what love, are here revealed! It is impossible, yes, it is impossible to conceive of the love of God that is bestowed upon fallen humanity. Well, He tells you, “Lay up for yourselves treasure in heaven.” [Matthew 6:20.] Will you do it? “Ye are,” says Jesus, “the light of the world,” if you become rich in heavenly treasure, in the knowledge of the true God. The end is near, and every soul is now to walk carefully, humbly, meekly with Christ Jesus. We are to behold the Lamb of God which taketh away the sins of the world, and then we shall reveal Christ to the world. I feel my weakness every day. I feel my inefficiency. O how I long to do more! Brother Haskell, you need never feel that you are alone. Angels are your companions. The Comforter that Jesus Christ promised to send in His name abides with you. Christ said of His followers, “Ye are the light of the world.” [Matthew 5:14.] It is your part to let the light shine forth in clear steady rays. Let your good works represent Christ. How many there are who feel that it would be a great thing to tread the soil of old Jerusalem, and that their faith would be greatly strengthened by visiting the scenes of the Saviour’s life and death. But old Jerusalem will never be a sacred place until it is cleansed by the refining fire from heaven. When the converting power of God takes hold of the teachers in our schools, they will consider that a knowledge of God and of Jesus Christ covers a much broader field than the so-called scholastic education does. But unless they have a much broader view in regard to what constitutes education, they will experience great hindrance in preparing missionaries to go out and give their knowledge to others. In all our education, we should remember the words of Christ, “Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid.” (Matthew 5:14.) God has given precious light to His people with which to enlighten the world; and are not many treating it with indifference and acting as though the heavenly gift was of little consequence? Christ said, “Ye are the light of the world.” [Matthew 5:14.] Who did He mean were the light of the world? He meant those who are following in His footsteps. He says, “He that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.” [John 8:12.] It is those who are branches of the living vine who bear much fruit. They are sustained by the nourishment that flows from the parent stock. Those who abide in Christ will have the same spirit that He manifested, and be actuated by the same motives, and be pure, peaceable and undefiled, yet they will be as burning and shining lights amid the moral darkness of the world.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 10 (1895)

Upon the decisions reached in that day depends the future, eternal interest of every soul. We shall have unspeakable joy, or unutterable woe and misery, the horrors of despair. O, how Jesus will love to recompense every true worker! Every faithfully performed duty will receive His blessing. It is then that He pronounces the benediction, “Well done, thou good and faithful servant. Thou hast been faithful over a few things; I will make thee ruler over many things; enter thou into the joy of thy Lord.” [Matthew 25:21.] What is the joy of our Lord? “For the joy that was set before him” He “endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.” [Hebrews 12:2.] “We then, as workers together with him, beseech you also that you receive not the grace of God in vain. (For he saith, I have heard thee in a time accepted, and in a day of salvation have I succored thee: Behold, now is the accepted time; behold, now is the day of salvation.)” [2 Corinthians 6:1, 2.] Truth, precious truth, is not to be hidden in our hearts. “A city set on a hill cannot be hid.” [Matthew 5:14.]Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 10 (1895)

Oh, that men would honor and fear and love God always. We are God’s living epistles, known and read of all men. The Word of God, not only preached, but exemplified in the life, reveals the power of God in the molding and fashioning of the character after the Divine Model. “Ye are the light of the world.” [Matthew 5:14.] Religious light is to shine through good works, for these works are the fruit, and testify of the faith in Jesus Christ and His words of life, which make men wise unto salvation. This is one of God’s ways of making us channels through which He communicates, manifesting the excellency of the power of the gospel. Every soul who is indeed a child of the light and not of darkness is bound to let that light shine in clear, steady rays, to be not carnal, but spiritually minded, that he may contribute to the very best of his ability toward the illumination of the world. Christ’s commission is every to be kept before the church. Sinners must be saved by the light reflected from the church by the ministry of the Word. Through God’s obedient, loyal, commandment keeping people, sinners are to behold the Sun of Righteousness. Ministers and people are to catch the light of God’s purposes, hidden from the world because it cannot see the Sun of Righteousness. “Ye are the light of the world,” Christ said to His disciples. [Matthew 5:14.] As light-bearers, you are to reflect the rays of the Sun of Righteousness to the world. Ye are a spectacle to the world, to angels, and to men. God’s people should now receive the light, and diffuse it. They need not try to shine; but they will shine if their hearts and minds are enlightened by the Sun of Righteousness. Spoke in the tent one hour and a half to a good congregation who listened with intense interest. I dwelt upon the simple truth which must be received to constitute us individually the light of the world. “Ye are,” said Christ to His disciples, “the light of the world.” [Matthew 5:14.] He intended to teach them that they were chosen for a special work, and that in their spirit and in their words and influence they were to represent the character of the truth. They were to keep humble, not striving for the supremacy, and then they would rest in His love and be happy. The lamps that give light have no light in themselves. Abundant resources, both divine and human, have been opened before the church of God; but sadness comes to my soul as I see her make such little advancement, and send forth her light in such feeble rays. She does not fulfill her God-appointed mission. “Ye are the light of the world,” said Christ, “a city that is set on an hill cannot be hid.” [Matthew 5:14.] While surrounded by the moral darkness of this degenerate age, the light of the Christian should increase in power and dispel the darkness that Satan is crowding in upon the world. But this light has grown dim. There should be something more than a mere profession. It is genuine piety that distinguishes the children of obedience from the children of disobedience. But the Christian zeal, earnest self-denial and self-sacrifice, of God’s people have not been in proportion to their resources, opportunities, and privileges. Let diligent effort be made to become acquainted with those who know not the truth, and let seed be sown in every place. “Ye are the light of the world.” [Matthew 5:14.] The first work to be done is to close the door of the heart to jealousy and evil surmising. Close the door fast. Let there be shame and sorrow over the lack of Christian fellowship and sympathy that has been manifest. Let not those who are appointed to be shepherds of the look feel that they must devote their time so largely in preparing to preach the Word. Let them change the order of things. Let them put forth personal effort. Let them come into families, and become acquainted with the members of the church. Unselfish Motives

O, what a physician may be who is a servant of our Lord Jesus Christ! The light of the glory of God may shine upon the man who thus is a laborer together with God. Christianity in the life in business transactions, in professional practices, will be as a power in the earth. “Ye are the light of the world” (Matthew 5:14), said Christ. The leaven of sanctification and holiness must be brought into the life and character. In our publishing house, in our Sanitarium and College, we should watch with the utmost care that we do not act from selfish motives. Life at best is short, and this little period of probation should be pure, lived with an eye single to the glory of God. We should not be double minded, now serving the Lord and again serving selfish purposes in all our plans and actions. God says, “Ye are the light of the world.” [Matthew 5:14.] We are to exhibit in our borders all the improvements that our God-given tact and knowledge have enabled us to make. Everything which has a practical bearing on the improvement of the work is not to become the property of one man, for it comes from the heavenly Father, who gave manna from heaven to the whole camp of Israel. That which men achieve by means of the wisdom God has given them is not to be used merely to advance one line of the work, but is to be used to promote the cause of God as a whole.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 15 (1900)

Christ pointed out the position His people should occupy when He said, “Ye are the light of the world.” [Matthew 5:14.] From the members of the church is to go forth an influence which shall enlighten others. The Lightgiver arranges the lamps so that His house (the world) may be illuminated. He desires light to be given to all that are in the house. He has an inexhaustible supply of light, and He places those who truly believe in Him where they will shine brighter and brighter unto the perfect day. Constantly our lights are to shine more and more brightly, because we receive increased light from the Source of all light. Beholding Christ, we are to become changed into His image and reflect His light to the world.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 16 (1901)

Those who are willing to be faithful learners in the school of Christ, willing to put to the stretch every God-given power, that they may seek for truth as for hid treasure, will not only have light themselves, but will be able to impart light to those around them. Christ has said of His people, “Ye are the light of the world.” [Matthew 5:14.] It is our privilege to advance daily in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour. By studying the life of Christ, and by patterning after His character, we may be changed into the same image. ... All heaven is at our command. If we are obedient children of God, we may draw daily supplies of grace. Whatever temptations, trials, or persecutions may come upon us, we need not be discouraged. I wish I could see you and converse with you. I could do this much better than to write with my pen. I am very weary. I cannot write much, but will come right to the point. I would suggest that fewer stories be put in the Bible Echo and that we have more of that matter which is appropriate to the title, Bible Echo. We can find all these stories in any place where we may go; but what we need in this late day is not stories to amuse, but “present truth” to enlighten. “Ye are the light of the world, a city set on a hill cannot be hid.” [Matthew 5:14.] Would it not be more appropriate in this perilous time to show keen perception in selecting appropriate matter from the books which have been printed such as Desire of Ages, Patriarchs and Prophets, Great Controversy, and the many testimonies which are light to shine forth to the people. Let us have the things which are meat in due season. You can with keen judgment select matter that will be more spiritual, nourishing food to help the people. MR No. 55—The Spirit that Should Characterize the Work of Seventh-day Adventist Physicians
1MR 213.1
The selfishness, the carelessness of spirit that is manifested in regard to the words spoken, the habits indulged, the maxims uttered, are all sowing seed that will yield a baneful harvest.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 18 (1903)

Our large books should have a wider circulation. The words “Ye are the light of the world” [Matthew 5:14] must have a much clearer fulfilment in the lives of Seventh-day Adventists than they have yet had. It does not make a man a Christian to have his name on the church books. Christ says of His people, “Ye are the light of the world.” [Matthew 5:14.] But the light does not originate with themselves. Their light comes from heaven. “God, who commanded the light to shine out of darkness, hath shined in our hearts, to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.” [2 Corinthians 4:6.] This light is a heavenly principle, to be carried out in every phase of the religious experience. Love for God is definite and positive in its action and puts into the heart of men an unselfish love for his fellow beings. It leads him to set a noble, Christlike example. It is a heavenly gift, and is always at work, leading its possessor to pattern after Christ. This love is shown in discipleship. “If any man will come after Me,” said Jesus, “let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me.” [Matthew 16:24.] “So shall he be My disciple.” [See John 15:8.] Christ’s love was enduring. It came from God and enabled Him to endure sacrifice and privation that God might be glorified.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 19 (1904)

He brought life and immortality to light. He proclaimed over the rent sepulcher of Joseph, I am the Resurrection and the Life. Now, He was raised, that we shall be raised, if we follow after to know Him. We may be laid in the grave, but we shall be brought forth out of the grave when the last trump shall sound. Christ said, Let not your heart be troubled. [John 14:1.] Well, what is the greatest trouble? To think what a big schemer you can be? To think what great advantages you must show to the world? No. You are to guard your brother’s interest as you guard your own, and when you guard your brother’s interest as you guard your own, the heavenly angels guard your interest. Let the young men and young women that come to our schools, and those who have been set as guardians over them, remember that God calls them to move steadily forward, to advance step by step, because Christ is their Saviour. The youth are to be taught to consecrate themselves, body and soul, to the service of Christ. While in school they are to impart as well as to receive. They will find that by imparting truth, they will increase in a knowledge of Christ. They can be channels of light. Said Christ, “Ye are the light of the world.” [Matthew 5:14.] When you get a fresh thought from the Word of God, or from your other studies, do not keep it to yourself. The church is the object of God’s tenderest love and care. If the members will allow Him, He will reveal His character through them. He says to them, “Ye are the light of the world” (Matthew 5:14). Those who walk and talk with God practice the gentleness of Christ. In their lives, forbearance, meekness, and self-restraint are united with holy earnestness and diligence. As they advance heavenward, the sharp, rough edges of character are worn off, and godliness is seen. Let your light so shine before men that they by seeing your good works may glorify your Father which is in heaven. Will you do it? We are straining every nerve. I am up hours before any one else is stirring in the house, to trace upon paper that which will come out in books. My son and Professor Magan are at work in St. Helena. The Lord Jesus has made His church the depositary of sacred truth. He has left with her the work of carrying out His purposes and His plans to save the souls for whom He has manifested such interest, such unmeasured love. Like the sun in relation to our world, He rises amid the moral darkness—the Sun of Righteousness. He said of Himself, “I am the light of the world.” John 8:12. He said to his followers, “Ye are the light of the world.” Matthew 5:14.... By reflecting the image of Jesus Christ, by the beauty and holiness of their characters, by their continual self-denial and their separation from all idols, large or small, they reveal that they have learned in the school of Christ. They are continually catching the spirit of love and forbearance, meekness, and gentleness, and they stand as representatives of Christ, a spectacle to the world, to angels, and to men....Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 24 (1909)

I appeal to the teachers in our educational institutions not to let religious earnestness and zeal retrograde. Make no backward movements, but let your watchword be: “Advance.” Our schools must rise to a much higher plane of action; broader views must be held; stronger faith and deeper piety must exist; the word of God must be made the root and branch of all wisdom and intellectual attainments. When the converting power of God takes hold of them, they will see that a knowledge of God covers a much broader field than the so-called “advance methods” of education. In all the education given, they should remember the words of Christ: “Ye are the light of the world.” Matthew 5:14. Then they will not experience so great hindrance in preparing missionaries to go out and give their knowledge to others.Testimonies for the Church, vol. 6

God has called His church in this day, as He called ancient Israel, to stand as a light in the earth. By the mighty cleaver of truth, the messages of the first, second, and third angels, He has separated them from the churches and from the world to bring them into a sacred nearness to Himself. He has made them the depositaries of His law and has committed to them the great truths of prophecy for this time. 2TT 327.3
Our Lord designed that His church should reflect to the world the fullness and sufficiency that we find in Him. We are constantly receiving of God’s bounty, and by imparting of the same we are to represent to the world the love and beneficence of Christ. While all heaven is astir, dispatching messengers to every part of the earth to carry forward the work of redemption, the church of the living God are also to be colaborers with Christ. We are members of His mystical body. He is the head, controlling all the members of the body. Jesus Himself, in His infinite mercy, is working on human hearts, effecting spiritual transformations so amazing that angels look on with astonishment and joy. The same unselfish love that characterizes the Master is seen in the character and life of His true followers. Christ expects that men will become partakers of His divine nature while in this world, thus not only reflecting His glory to the praise of God, but illumining the darkness of the world with the radiance of heaven. Thus will be fulfilled the words of Christ: “Ye are the light of the world.” Matthew 5:14.Testimony Treasures, vol. 3

The light of the knowledge of the glory of God as seen in the face of Jesus Christ may shine upon us, and we may stand in the position where it can be said of us, “Ye are the light of the world.” [Matthew 5:14.] Were it not for the communication between heaven and earth, there would be no light in the world. Like Sodom and Gomorrah all would perish beneath the wrath of an offended God. But the world is not left in darkness. The long-suffering and mercy of God is still extended to the children of men. It is His design that the divine rays of light which emanate from the throne of God shall be received in our hearts and reflected by the children of light.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 3 (1876 - 1882)

My very dear children, I have no doubt but that you must go to Europe soon, and I want you should be learning of the heavenly Teacher and learn all that you can in the sciences. I am confident England will be the field at first for you to both labor in. This will be attended with far less difficulty than in Switzerland. The truth will find more ready access to the people in England than in Switzerland. There is in the truth, present truth, an inherent power and tendency to win its way into the minds of those who are honest, and such will embrace the truth. The man with truth on his side should never allow himself to doubt that he shall be able to obtain a reception for it among those who will hear it presented to them fairly and clearly. With proper evidence, they cannot in England withhold their belief. Falsehood and prejudice may exist, yet the truth will prevail amid the moral darkness. “Ye are,” says Christ, “the light of the world.” [Matthew 5:14.] Whoever considers the truth, if it be even to find arguments against it, the bright beams of truth will like sharp arrows penetrate their armor. And those who will open their eyes, the bright beams of truth will shine about them.Faith and Works

You can be just what Christ said His disciples should be—“the light of the world” (Matthew 5:14). You should diffuse that light, hope, and faith to others. You are not to go groaning your way onward in His service, as though He were a hard taskmaster, laying upon you burdens that you cannot carry. This is not the case. He wants you to be filled with joy, to be filled with the blessing of God, to know the length and breadth and height and depth of the love of God, which passeth knowledge. When His name is mentioned He wants it to strike the keynote, and there will be a response in your hearts. Then you can offer up thanksgiving and glory and honor and praise to Him that sitteth on the throne and to the Lamb.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 4 (1883 - 1886)

We are to heed the exhortation of the apostle, that we are to be holy in all manner of conversation. And as we separate those things from us which will be a hindrance to our advancement, the Holy Spirit will come in. We want to be filled with the Spirit of Jesus; and if you are not closely connected with Christ, then the thoughts of your mind will be upon unimportant things. But if you are connected with Jesus, you will just as surely be a channel of light as Jesus is light, for Jesus has said to His followers, “Ye are the light of the world.” [Matthew 5:14.]Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 4 (1883 - 1886)

But there is another point that I want to impress upon your mind. You should every one labor to reach the highest standard as representative men and women, because your example will tell upon those who have wrought in connection with this church and this office of publication. God expects you in your influence to show that the truth has sanctified the soul. As you seek in the strength of God to advance and grow up into the stature of Christ Jesus, you want to have seasons of meditation and prayer that you may be capable of being channels of light. Christ says, “Ye are the light of the world.” [Matthew 5:14.] You are called, while you are placed in connection with this office, to let the light be shining out into different parts of the world. And if, while you are engaged in this solemn work, you should be letting your prayers ascend to God that the truth you are handling may bring souls to Christ, angels will be round about you.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 4 (1883 - 1886)

“Ye are the light of the world,” said Christ to His disciples. [Matthew 5:14.] I feel deeply over the inactivity and lack of faith and piety of our workers in our missions. God has entrusted to us great light, and our works do not correspond to that light. Satan is intensely active in these last days, doing his work of destroying souls and making attractive the road that leads to death. He prepares his agents, wheels them into line, and sets them to work to deceive and destroy. Men who are not on the side of God are on the enemy’s side. They are bold and defiant. Many deny the existence of God. There are knots of infidels binding in bundles ready to burn. They strengthen the hands of one another in their wickedness. They take counsel of their own hearts that are impressed by the originator of all evil. They assemble in council to devote their God-given powers to devise means to uproot the knowledge and reverence of God out of the human heart. They are plotting the suppression of the truth and put all their plans to work to increase darkness, disobedience, and error.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 4 (1883 - 1886)

There has been with some a selfish ambition to keep from others the knowledge they could have imparted. Others have not cared to tax themselves by educating any other workers. That which you need, my brother and sister, is the converting grace of God upon your own hearts. You need the Spirit of Jesus. You both need to learn in the school of Christ meekness and lowliness of heart. You do not feel your need of deep inward piety, and here is where you are being self-deceived. I feel that you are delaying the decisions you ought to make for your own good and for the good of others. God shows no special favoritism to elevate one above another. He requires the whole heart, the entire affection. God expects and enjoins upon every man to do his duty, not to profess a knowledge of Jesus Christ and the truth and have no fruit appear. Small or great, learned or unlearned, rich or poor, it is just the same requirement. Every one is called to act just according to the ability God has given him. He must render his service, or there will be guilt on his conscience and peril to his soul. No one can afford to lose heaven. Remember the words of Christ to all of His disciples, “Ye are the light of the world.” [Matthew 5:14.] God depends on those who know the way to show it to others. God has entrusted to men the treasures of His truth. The inward grace will be revealed in the outward action. It is faith and trust and confidence we want in God. It is not the eloquent speech, the intellectual acquirements that make the influence far-reaching. We need that spirit that will show to others that we have been learning in the school of Christ and that we copy the Pattern given us. We want a heart not lifted up into vanity; and mind not centered on self, but drawn out to bless others. God notices these humble works, and they outweigh every other consideration.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 4 (1883 - 1886)

We thank the Lord that a few have had the moral courage in Nimes to cease to longer transgress the law of God, to accept the light and take their position firmly to keep the Sabbath that God has sanctified and blessed. Let the light shine forth from these few in bright, steady rays, reflecting light upon those who are in darkness. Said Christ to His disciples, “Ye are the light of the world.” [Matthew 5:14.] God has a church. It is not the great cathedral, neither is it the national establishment, neither is it the various denominations; it is the people who love God and keep His commandments. “Where two or three are gathered together in My name, there am I in the midst of them.” [Matthew 18:20.] Where Christ is even among the humble few, this is Christ’s church, for the presence of the high and holy One who inhabiteth eternity can alone constitute a church. Where two or three are present who love and obey the commandments of God, Jesus there presides; let it be in the desolate place of the earth, in the wilderness, in the city enclosed in prison walls. The glory of God has penetrated the prison walls, flooding with glorious beams of heavenly light the darkest dungeon. His saints may suffer, but their sufferings will, like the apostles of old, spread their faith and win souls to Christ and glorify His holy name. The bitterest opposition expressed by those who hate God’s great moral standard of righteousness should not and will not shake the steadfast soul who trusts fully in God. All things shall work together for good to those who love God. “This is the love of God, that ye keep His commandments.” [1 John 5:3.] They that will be doers of the Word are building securely, and the tempest and storm of persecution will not shake their foundation, because their souls are rooted to the eternal rock.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 4 (1883 - 1886)

You are to develop traits of character which need to be cultivated as I have mentioned. Being full of earnest love, meekness, and forbearance, you will not disgust people, but will win them to you. Our work is aggressive. It should be the study of every worker how they can find access to hearts. Faith, zeal, and holiness in your own life will have a telling influence upon those for whom you labor. Those who wrestle most earnestly with God in their closets will go forth to their converse with men, anointed with the heavenly unction for their mission. [Supplementary Item:] We returned from Tramelan to Basel February 7. We found that special efforts were being made with all connected with the mission building to draw nigh to God by confession and earnest prayer that the blessing of the Lord might be granted us in a special manner when our conference and council should convene. Meetings were held at half-past six o’clock commencing February 6. I commenced to give morning talks February 7 [8?]. We labored earnestly with our brethren and sisters for deeper spirituality and knowledge of the will of God. We felt the great need, as laborers together with God, of meeting a higher standard. The Lord has said of His people, You are the light of the world. [Matthew 5:14.] We are representatives of Bible truth. God has made us the repositories of His truth. As we approach the end of earth’s history we shall have increased power, proportionate to the trials to which we are subjected. We are not to keep ourselves in a state of worry and doubt, binding up our souls in the perplexities of unbelief and worldliness, in worrying and scolding and fretting, but wait on the Lord, in perfect obedience to His will, and we shall see the salvation of God from day to day. Christianity in the life, in business transactions, in professional practices, will be as a power in the earth. “Ye are the light of the world,” said Christ. [Matthew 5:14.] The leaven of sanctification and holiness must be brought into the life and character. In our publishing house, in our sanitarium and college, we should watch with the utmost care that we do not act from selfish motives. Life, at best, is short, and this little period of probation should be pure, lived with an eye single to the glory of God. We should not be double-minded, now serving the Lord, and again serving selfish purposes in all our plans and actions. The church members must be active and zealous workers to bring the souls for whom Christ has died to a saving knowledge of the truth. In working for the Master they will be a healthy church—in proportion to their activity. The light of every individual member of the church is to be a bright and shining light to guide sinners who have lost their way back to the paradise of God. Then bring all the paradise you can in your Christian life. The lights of the church must not grow dim, must not cease to burn and reflect light all along the pathway that leads to the celestial city, for terrible will be the consequences if the light does not shine. “Ye are the light of the world.” [Matthew 5:14.] Is this exclusively addressed to a few men who have been ordained to the ministry? No! but to every Christian, young or old, rich or poor. If Christ has forgiven them of their sins, if the truth hath made them free, have they not a work to do for the Master? If they are Christians they will present the truth to others. They will not consider that all that they have to do is to serve themselves—live to please themselves and to glorify themselves. They will have a sense that they are Christ’s, bought with a price, and will concentrate their energies to the work of building up a kingdom of God by raising souls that are ready to perish, seeking to save the lost.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 7 (1891-1892)

I know that the Lord will comfort and strengthen you in your affliction. I have not been well and have been much exhausted since I left Battle Creek. Since last September my labor has been continuous. Some matters have been very taxing. But I have found no time to rest. The promise to us is, “Be thou faithful unto death, and I will give thee a crown of life.” [Revelation 2:10.] The light of truth that has been graciously given us is now to go forth from us to others. “Ye are the light of the world,” said Christ. [Matthew 5:14.] He has made us stewards of His grace, stewards of sacred responsibilities. All the goods He has entrusted to us are to be faithfully used to His glory.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 7 (1891-1892)

“Ye are my witnesses, saith the Lord.” [Isaiah 43:10.] “Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid.” [Matthew 5:14.] God has given His people great light, and He expects them to walk in the light, to move under the direct influence of the light, and to repeat over and over, as did Paul, God’s miraculous leadings in the past. The prophets have prophesied of this time in which we live. They spoke of future events, and we have the benefit of their enlightenment. “Not unto themselves, but unto us did they minister the things which are now reported unto you by them that have preached the gospel unto you with the Holy Ghost sent down from heaven, which things the angels desire to look into.” [1 Peter 1:12.]Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 7 (1891-1892)

I trust you will keep this matter agitated. Those who wish to sacrifice for the truth’s sake, let them answer to the call, “Whom shall I send?” “Here am I, send me.” [Isaiah 6:8.] The truth is soon to triumph gloriously, and all who will triumph with the truth must be laborers together with God. The time is short, the night cometh in which no man can work. We must do what is possible for us to do now, in earnest, determined effort. “A city set on a hill cannot be hid.” [Matthew 5:14.] Believers, we not only have lessons to learn for our own benefit, but in our improvement of the grace of talent, trusted in privileges and opportunities, we are helping others to follow our example.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 7 (1891-1892)

I received printed letter last evening which I read with much interest. I have felt very sad. Every time I have taken the Signs in my hands I have laid it down with disappointment, for it contained so little, and it seemed to me going backward in the place of going forward. I have not the assurance that the voice that was heard in the arrangement for the belittling of the Signs was the voice of God. By far better be cramped in your buildings and save expense in that line, but never, never lower your light, or let it shine more dimly, or not emit one-half of its illumination in the messages which come from the press which shall go to all parts of the world. “Ye are the light of the world.” [Matthew 5:14.] May the Lord help you to cut down in something else, rather than the paper He has established on the Pacific Coast. Let those working in the office each make some little sacrifice in point of wages. If necessary, let the cutting be in other lines rather than Signs of the Times. Those who are connected with Christ will grow in grace and in the knowledge of Jesus Christ, to the full stature of men and women. It is the privilege of every soul to make advancement. The Lord had food whereby His servants might <become enlarged> and grow to the full stature of men and women in Christ Jesus. What is the chaff to the full kernels of wheat? How great was my burden in that tent, in my feebleness that night! I know that the Lord was graciously willing to forgive sins and pardon the sinner, and my heart was stirred with an intensity of desire that all upon the campground should see the salvation of the Lord. To this people God had committed sacred trusts. He had made them repositories of light in regard to His law, and should Christ say of these highly favored, “Ye are both ignorant of the Scriptures and of the power of God”? [Matthew 22:29.] Should those who made so high a profession, because of their want of pure and undefiled religion dishonor the world’s Redeemer by their unconsecrated lives? “Ye are my witnesses,” saith the Lord. [Isaiah 43:10.] Should the people of God remain in a backslidden state, unconsecrated, unholy in life and in character? How then could Christ say of them, “Ye are the light of the world” and represent them as a city that is set upon a hill or a light upon a candlestick, giving light to all that are in the house? Christ says of His people: “Ye are the light of the world” (Matthew 5:14). It is not a small matter that the counsels and plans of God have been so clearly opened to us. It is a wonderful privilege to be able to understand the will of God as revealed in the sure word of prophecy. This places on us a heavy responsibility. In Him alone are our hopes of eternal life to be centered. We will then talk faith, talk hope, talk courage and diffuse light on every side. “Ye are,” said Christ, “the light of the world. A city ... set on a hill. ... Let your light so shine before men, that they may ... glorify your Father which is in heaven.” [Matthew 5:14, 16.] Faith must pierce the darkest cloud. Their lives show that they are not doers of the Word of Christ, and therefore are growing away from the only true copy. The Lord has made us the depositaries of the rich truths of His Word, that they may be communicated to the world. There must be no careless spirit, no unsanctified temper, no lack of strict integrity and uprightness, for these things, if cherished, dim our light. We must keep the soul in the love of God. This will not make any man, woman, or youth novices, or paralyze their sense of duty. God is dealing with us through His grace and providence. From eternity He has chosen us to be His obedient children. He gave His Son to die for us, that we might be sanctified through obedience to the truth, cleansed from all the littleness and cheapness of self. As a people, we are far behind. The apostle Paul declares, “Ye are our epistle, known and read of all men.” [2 Corinthians 3:2.] Christ is our efficiency. The lives of His followers are to be an exposition of the sacred truths of His Word. This is an illustration which is much more effective than any illustration which an artist can conceive. As we hold forth the Word of life, we have the strongest motives to be spotless, holy, self-denying Christians. The piety of those who believe in Christ is the world’s measurement of the power of the gospel. God calls upon us to show before heaven and earth that we shine as lights amid the moral darkness of this earth. We are individually to be true and loyal to higher laws. Our Redeemer, who paid His life as a ransom for us, has said, “If ye love me, keep my commandments.” [John 14:15.] The world around us sets its standard of customs and fashions to suit the inclination of unsanctified hearts; but they are not the rules for those who love Jesus Christ. Christ has chosen us out of the world, and has given us His own life to be our standard and our pattern. Every one whom God loves will say, I must live in this world, and yet not be of it. I must be as Christ has appointed. He says, “Ye are the light of the world. ... Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.” [Matthew 5:14, 16.] Keep the windows of the soul open toward heaven, and let the pure, holy atmosphere of heaven flow into the chambers of your mind and into the soul temple. God says, “A new heart will I give you.” [Ezekiel 36:26.] Every learner may be renewed in knowledge and true holiness. The ransom of an enslaved race was Christ’s purpose in coming to this earth. What a pity it is that human beings cannot discern their own weakness. What a pity that they enslave their souls by lifting themselves up unto vanity. Christ alone can make us free. And when He makes us free, we are free indeed. His power breaks the yoke of bondage that binds man to the great deceiver, the originator of sin. But how many there are who are unwilling to allow Christ to break their shackles. How many there are who choose to cling to the thralldom of sin. The gospel of Christ is truly believed only when it is practiced. Faith is justified by works. Self must be hid; Christ must appear as the chiefest among ten thousand, the One altogether lovely. When an unreserved surrender of the powers of body, mind, and soul is made to the Saviour, self no longer strives for the mastery. What man needs today is the crucifixion of self and the revelation in his life of Christ, the hope of glory. Then will be fulfilled the words, “Ye are the light of the world.” [Matthew 5:14.] Then will be answered the prayer, “That they all may be one, as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us.” [John 17:21.] In thought, word, and action, Christ’s followers will be an exemplification of godliness. An atmosphere of peace will surround them. Step by step let us follow on to know the Lord, treading in His footprints, striving to live His life. He says to His followers, “Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid. ... Let your light so shine before men that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.” [Matthew 5:14, 16.] From the lives of God’s children, the bright light of purity, of honesty, of unselfishness, is to shine forth.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 17 (1902)

God’s people are to stand as lights in the world. They are to realize that upon them rests the solemn responsibility of reflecting rays of light upon the pathway of those who are not keeping the commandments of God. Christ Himself has declared, “Ye are the light of the world” (Matthew 5:14). We are to seek to be light bearers. And when the light of divine truth shines forth with distinctness from the words and works of God’s children, will there be seen any quarreling, any backbiting, among the light bearers? The world will see no dissension in the lives of those from whom the light of heaven is shed abroad. Brethren and sisters, as you let your light shine before men, they will “see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven” (Matthew 5:16). A precious influence will go forth as the result of these good works, that will bring salvation to those who behold it. God desires that we keep our light constantly shining.—Manuscript 95, 1906, 3. Christ declares to His disciples: “Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid. ... Let your light so shine before men that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.” [Matthew 5:14, 16.] Christians are to reveal to the world that they are wearing the yoke of the great Teacher and learning of Him His meekness and lowliness. As obedient sons and daughters of God, they are to fulfil their obligations to Him, giving to the world a proper representation of His character. Thus they become lights in the world.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 18 (1903)

Very often I think of the rich promises given us in the Word in regard to God’s keeping power. We are kept by His power. How reasonable then it is that we should be careful to walk in the footsteps of Jesus. He says, “I am the Light of the world: he that followeth Me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.” [John 8:12.] Of those who walk in this light He declares, “Ye are the light of the world. ... All that your brothers and sisters need, all that any of us need is to live a humble, Christian life, revealing in character the strength received from Jesus Christ through union with Him. We are to live up to all the light we receive. United with Christ, we shall be laborers together with God. The light of Christ’s righteousness will be imparted to us, if we will impart that light to those who know not God, exerting over unbelievers an influence for good. Christ has said, “Ye are the light of the world. ... Let your light so shine before men that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.” [Matthew 5:14, 16.] Only by letting our lights shine forth in good works can we gain true happiness. We cannot be happy unless we strive earnestly to do that which is right. When we obey God we not only gain happiness ourselves, but we become a source of happiness and strength to others.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 18 (1903)

Jesus says, “Ye are the light of the world. ... Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.” [Matthew 5:14, 16.] Let every professing Christian search his heart diligently and put away everything unlike Christ. Let him remember that he has been bought with a price, even the blood of the Son of God. So long as he remembers this, he will be the less liable to indulge in pride and foolishness. Constantly he will endeavor so to live that he can meet the Saviour in peace; and he will not fail to repel every suggestion of the enemy to engage in intemperate, wicked practices. Those who are faithful in this life will be ready to welcome the Saviour when He comes in the clouds of heaven, and to say, “Lo, this is our God; we have waited for Him, and He will save us.” [Isaiah 25:9.]Manuscript Releases, vol. 1 [Nos. 19-96]

Christ said to His disciples as He looked upon them, “Ye are the light of the world.” [Matthew 5:14.] What a message to Christians! What a message to those who have their Bibles. “What will a man give in exchange for his soul.” [Matthew 16:26.] If you gain the whole world, and lose your own soul, what do you gain by it?19LtMs, Ms 153, 1904, par. 45
Here it says in the [seventh] verse: “Little children, let no man deceive you.” We grow up like little children. Sometimes the grown-up children do not have patience with the smaller children. There should not be any speech that will dishonor God in the home, but let us have pleasantness. Carry a pleasant countenance. You can make sunshine or you can make clouds. It is best to have a sunshiny countenance. It will not blister your lips at all to have pleasant words. It will give life and brightness and joy and gladness all through the house. Let us see how much light we can manufacture. Christ said, “Ye are the light of the world. ... Whatever may be our work, the service we render to God, if offered in sincerity, is a part of the grand plan of redemption. In a world shrouded in darkness, we are to be bright and shining lights, witnesses to the power of truth. Then Christ came forth from the grave and proclaimed over the rent sepulcher of Joseph, “I am the resurrection and the life.” [John 11:25.] To us this means that if we die in Christ Jesus, having lived in obedience to His commandments—a life reflecting honor to the Creator—He will be faithful in raising us to immortality at the last day, when He shall come to call His own unto Himself. We are to honor the Lord upon the earth with every capability of the brain. We cannot be content with a low standard. We are to live in such a way that we can carry the gospel to those who are in darkness. Of us Christ says; “Ye are the light of the world.” And He adds: “Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.” [Matthew 5:14, 16.]Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 20 (1905)

Let no one take up the work of the Lord boastingly. Let every one keep before him the perfection of Christ’s work. He always worked to a purpose. If you would do His work, you must crucify self. Self-importance is a very poor element to be brought into the work of God. Let your words be full of meaning, full of love to Christ, and let your spirit be clad in the beauty of holiness. Show the fruit of daily consecration. Christ calls for fruit-bearing branches. Bring forth fruit to the glory of God. “Ye are the light of the world.” “Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.” [Matthew 5:14, 16.]Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 21 (1906)

Verses 18-21. Will you read that chapter through? It is the fifteenth chapter of John. I will not hold you but a few minutes longer, but I want to say this: every soul of us is required of God that we should help every other soul that we can. We are not to close our doors and let souls suffer and we not help them. We are to represent Christ. Christ loved the world; He gave His life for the world, and our precious Saviour placed Himself where—what did He do? He placed Himself in that position where He could be a blessing to the world. “Ye are,” He said to His disciples, “the light of the world.” “Let your light so shine ... in heaven.” [Matthew 5:14, 16.] Keep back that hasty suggestion to your mind. Love one another. There is so little of Christlike forbearance and love, and I want to tell you, the converting power of God must come through the churches wherever they are. And there must be an awakening to take hold. There are souls perishing in their sins, and we want to tell them.22LtMs, Ms 182, 1907, par. 31
We want to do missionary work as we have never done it before. We want to carry out the missionary efforts as far as possible. We want to send to different climes, to different places, to carry the missionary work forward. It is going as it never has gone before, and we have not one particle of means to waste. We want to invest it as God’s money. “The silver and gold,” He declares, “is Mine.” [Haggai 2:8.] And so it is. And we are to invest that silver, we are invest that gold, in the cause of God, to bring souls to the knowledge of the truth. Hunt for souls, hunt for them, and may every one of us practice the self-denial and the self-sacrifice that is essential. We must have means; we must have it to establish in various places schoolhouses, and meetinghouses. They will be humble. They will be made very plain and very simple. I am very glad you have this meetinghouse. It looks simple and plain, and yet nice and fully capable of doing honor to the meetings that shall be held in it. I thank the Lord in your behalf for this. Now let us do all we can to bring the light of truth right in where we are. “Ye are the light of the world,” Christ declares. “Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.” [Matthew 5:14, 16.] God’s work in the earth in these last days is to reflect the light that Christ brought into the world. This light is to dissipate the gross darkness of ages. Men and women in heathen darkness are to be reached by those who at one time were in a similar condition of ignorance, but who have received the knowledge of the truth of God’s Word. These heathen nations will accept eagerly the efforts made to instruct them in a knowledge of God.Christ’s Object Lessons
Chapter 29—“To Meet the Bridegroom”
COL 416.2
Christ, the outshining of the Father’s glory, came to the world as its light. He came to represent God to men, and of Him it is written that He was anointed “with the Holy Ghost and with power,” and “went about doing good.” Acts 10:38. In the synagogue at Nazareth He said, “The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me, because He hath anointed Me to preach the gospel to the poor; He hath sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised, to preach the acceptable year of the Lord.” Luke 4:18, 19. This was the work He commissioned His disciples to do. “Ye are the light of the world,” He said. “Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.” Matthew 5:14, 16.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 22 (1907)

Let us not give the impression that our religion consists principally in coming to the church on the Sabbath, and numbering one among a number who listen to a sermon and then go back to their homes to continue in sinful practices. Christ said to His disciples: “Ye are the light of the world.” And, He continued, “Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.” [Matthew 5:14, 16.] Christ has given us a pattern to work to, but unless we make diligent effort with the help of God, we shall miss the mark. We must be sanctified to God, soul, body, and spirit.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 22 (1907)

I have had some conversation with Elder Hibbard today. He tells of his work in San Francisco. About thirty have embraced the truth as the result of his labors there. We feel very thankful to God for this. O if our people would individually arouse to their responsibilities as light-bearers to the world, we would see wonderful results. “Ye are the light of the world,” Christ declares. “Let your light so shine before men that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.” [Matthew 5:14, 16.]Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 22 (1907)

The age demands that the servants of God be men of faith and prayer, who realize the responsibilities that rest upon them as bearers of the last message of mercy to a perishing world. “Ye are the light of the world,” Christ declared. “Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.” [Matthew 5:14, 16.] Many, many souls will be brought to a knowledge of the truth if intelligent labor is put forth in their behalf.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 22 (1907)

There is more that I might read, but I will leave it to be read to you. There are some things I wish to say. My dear brethren and sisters, what are we here for?—We are here like little children, to learn lessons from the great Teacher. We are here to teach others. “Ye are the light of the world,” said the Saviour. [Matthew 5:14.] We are to let our light shine before others. We should feel an interest for every soul that has not accepted the truth. We may take an interest in working for our neighbors. We need not secure a license before we can speak the truth to them in love, or pray with them. What can we say in the day of judgment, if this work has been neglected, and, though we have known the truth, we have allowed souls, without warning, to perish in their sins?22LtMs, Ms 71, 1907, par. 17
Christ has said, “Ye are the light of the world.” [Matthew 5:14.] Where shall His light be found if not among those who love God and keep His commandments? If you keep His commandments in truth, the light will shine forth through Oakland, through Berkeley, and through all these neighboring cities. “Ye are the light of the world;” and then He says further, “Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.” [Verse 16.] It is the good works that are needed. We need the power to lay hold of divinity, a power that will never fail us so long as we keep our hold upon it. That power makes us a “partaker of the divine nature,” and enables us to escape “the corruption that is in the world through lust.” [2 Peter 1:4.] Let us now come humbly before God, confessing our sins, and let us by faith take hold of the divine nature. Then the angels of God will come into our midst.EGW Writings — Ellen G. White. Ellen G. White Estate · all rights reserved

For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled. Whosoever therefore shall break one of these least commandments, and shall teach men so, he shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven: but whosoever shall do and teach them, the same shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven. For I say unto you, That except your righteousness shall exceed the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, ye shall in no case enter into the kingdom of heaven.” Matthew 5:13-20.
