My sister, you have had opportunity to know the truth. But you have not gained that which you might have gained by studying the life of Christ. You enter into the falsities of the world because the peace and joy of Christ are not abiding in your heart. You should lose no opportunity to obtain soul culture, that you may be an example of good to others. Christ said to His disciples, “Ye are the light of the world. ... Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.” [Matthew 5:14, 16.] Truthfulness of character in Christian service is immortalized.16LtMs, Lt 118, 1901, par. 5
There is no excuse for religious defection or religious despondency, because all the promises of heavenly grace are for those who hunger and thirst after righteousness. Christ declares, “Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness; for they shall be filled.” [Verse 6.] “Look unto me, and be ye saved, all the ends of the earth; for I am God, and there is none else. I have sworn by myself, the word is gone out of my mouth in righteousness, and shall not return, That unto me every knee shall bow, and every tongue shall swear. Surely, shall one say, in the Lord have I righteousness and strength; even to him shall men come; and all that are incensed against him shall be ashamed. In the Lord shall all the seed of Israel be justified, and shall glory.” [Isaiah 45:22-25.]Matthew 5:7

“Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God” (Matthew 5:8). How would they see God?—in the way that Enoch saw Him. They had the privilege of walking and talking with God. By faith Enoch lived in the presence of God three hundred years. By faith he saw the faith of Jesus. He was taken into special favor with Him. The priests and rulers needed just such an experience as Enoch had. They needed a continual sense of the presence of God. O what riches of grace the Lord longed to bestow upon the favored people of God. “Blessed are the pure in heart; for they shall see God.” [Matthew 5:8.] Man has fallen, and the work of his life-time, be it longer or shorter, must be to recover through Christ what he has lost by sin,—the likeness to the divine. This work requires a thorough transformation of soul, body, and spirit. God mercifully sends rays of light to show man his true condition; but if he will not walk in the light, it is manifest that he takes pleasure in darkness. He avoids the light, lest his deeds should be reproved.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 4 (1883 - 1886)

Your children, you are to guide in the path of righteousness. You are to correct them if they are wrong and help them with unselfish interest to overcome, yourselves appreciating the words of Jesus, “Blessed are the pure in heart for they shall see God.” [Matthew 5:8.] Sin hath no dominion over the pure in heart. They have laid aside every weight and the sin which doth so easily beset them. They love God with all the heart. I will not write further to you now, but I entreat of you to make yourselves a necessity to each other. If you would be happy, bind your hearts together by the silken cords of love, and the Lord will bless you.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 7 (1891-1892)

Jesus says, “Blessed are the pure in heart; for they shall see God.” [Matthew 5:8.] O, what a statement is this! May the Lord impress our hearts with an intelligent understanding of what it is to be pure in heart. How many hours we walk apart from God, because we let the shadows that Satan has cast across our pathway attract our attention, and we look upon the darkness rather than the light. What is Satan’s object in thus keeping our minds upon the darkness? It is that by beholding we may become changed to the same image. By beholding the clouds, we become dark ourselves. But when Jesus is with us we can cheerfully bear His yoke and identify ourselves with Christ, for our life is hid with Christ in God.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 9 (1894)

But “he that saith, I know him, and keepeth not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him. But whoso keepeth his word, in him verily is the love of God perfected; hereby know we that we are in him. “Blessed are the pure in heart; for they shall see God!” [Matthew 5:8.] In the estimation of God, a pure heart is more precious than the gold of Ophir. A pure heart is the temple where God dwells, the sanctuary where Christ takes up His abode. A pure heart is above everything that is cheap and low; it is a shining light, a treasure house from which come uplifting, sanctified worlds. It is a place where the imagery of God is recognized, and where the highest delight is to behold His image. It is a heart that finds its whole and only pleasure and satisfaction in God, and whose thoughts and intents and purposes are alive with godliness. Such a heart is a sacred place; it is a treasury of all virtue. He who possesses such a heart is an example for old and young. This perfect temple wants no guest, relishes no company that does not perfectly harmonize with God.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 12 (1897)

It is waiting for you. “The pure in heart shall see God.” [Matthew 5:8.] As a present help in every time of need His presence is revealed. As you ask Him and call upon His name for help, He says, “Here I am close beside you, ready to help you if you are ready to be helped.” Communion with God is for each one, personal and direct. What position must we occupy as repentant sinners? Christ gave His precious life for us, that we might have life in Him. He came to take away our sins, that there should be nothing in our hearts antagonistic to God. Therefore the sanctification of the whole man is essential. If the carnal mind is allowed to work, it will overcome the man; therefore thorough, daily conversion is essential. “The pure in heart shall see God.” [Matthew 5:8.] A faithful sentinel must guard the actions of heart, mind, and soul. Without faith it is impossible to please God. Without faith, the selfish propensities of human nature will absorb the powers of the whole man. The Lord permitted them to be broken up until they should find in Him their center of attraction. If they would humble their proud hearts, and confess their sins, He would compensate them for the loss sustained, and in their obedience would magnify His name and glorify Himself as their Helper and their God.13LtMs, Lt 60, 1898, par. 30

To the captives in Babylon, especially to Daniel, God made known His mind and His will. Light was given for future ages, for the very time in which we are now living. By the River Hiddekel, Daniel saw that which would transpire in the latter days. Shut up the words, and seal the book, even to the time of the end; many shall run to and fro, and knowledge shall be increased. ... We are to behold Him, to look in faith and hope to our uplifted Saviour, and as we look to Him as the healer of all our woes we live through Christ. The loving heart of Christ is full of sympathy and love. He links His heart with the heart of humanity. He will not heal its bruises slightly and leave its pestilent matter to break forth again incurable. He will pass into it and through it the purifying, divine current of His own life and will cleanse and refine it and imbue the heart with His joy, that it may remain and abide with them, that their joy may be full. True faith purifies the heart from all envy. Christ gave Himself for us to redeem us from all iniquity and purify unto Himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works. “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.” [Matthew 5:8.] No one can have a clear view of God and a convincing knowledge of His character and yet be full of envy, pettishness, jealousy and evil surmisings. Jesus Christ was a perfect Pattern of moral excellency. He is our Example in all things. Earthly wisdom may exclude from the eye the wisdom of God. It is given unto the chosen and faithful to know the glory of the mystery of Christ formed within, the hope of glory.8LtMs, Ms 76, 1893, par. 61
I spoke again in the Theater Royal Sunday evening. The Lord gave me much freedom, but it seemed to me that many that heard were not in a condition of mind to receive the message of truth but rather to inquire if these things were true. The truths presented in regard to the world’s Redeemer being a personal Saviour and the law of God being binding upon the human family were strange things. They had listened to the messages from the pulpit that the law of God was abolished, that Christ came to abolish the law. I presented the Word of God, the very words spoken by Christ in His sermon on the mount, “Think not that I am come to destroy the law or the prophets; I am not come to destroy, but to fulfill,” etc. [Matthew 5:17.]Matthew 5:8-48

And “blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God” (Matthew 5:9). The spirit of peace is evidence of their connection with heaven. The sweet savor of Christ surrounds them. The fragrance of the life, the loveliness of the character, reveal to the world the fact that they are children of God. Men take knowledge of them that they have been with Jesus.42The Review and Herald, October 15, 1908.From Eternity Past

Be true to God and to yourself, that you may reveal the precious Saviour and thus help your fellow men. Be peaceable and unselfish. “Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God.” [Matthew 5:9.] Can you claim the blessing in your home life? Do you obey the injunction of God, “Walk in love, as Christ also hath loved us, and hath given himself for us an offering [and a] sacrifice to God for a sweet-smelling savor?” [Ephesians 5:2.] No Christian lives for himself. He is to be as a branch of the living Vine, deriving his nourishment and life-giving properties from the Vine. The Great Teacher says, “Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine; no more can ye, except ye abide in me.” [John 15:4.]9LtMs, Lt 34, 1894, par. 21
Those who abide in Christ are peacemakers. “Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God.” [Matthew 5:9.] Their names are registered in the Lamb’s Book of Life as sons and daughters of God. The church appreciates them and calls them the children of God. “Ye have heard that it hath been said, Thou shalt love thy neighbor, and hate thine enemy. But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you; that ye may be the children of your Father which is in heaven: for he maketh his sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sendeth his rain on the just and on the unjust. For if ye love them which love you, what reward have ye? Do not even the publicans the same? And if ye salute your brethren only, what do ye more than others? Do not even the publicans so? Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect.” [Verses 43-48.]9LtMs, Lt 34, 1894, par. 34
“Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God.” [Matthew 5:9.] It is by the manifestation of the Spirit of Christ in our words and actions that the world takes knowledge of us that we have been with Jesus, that we are the children of God. The true nature of our religion is not found in the position we occupy, but in the gentle spirit, the kindness, the peace which we manifest. Our religion is made manifest in the home circle by the atmosphere surrounding the soul that brings happiness to the family. We stated that we wished to find those who had not denied their past experience, and were directed to Elders Bennet and Bellings whom they said believed as we did. They had so much to say against these two men that we concluded that they were “persecuted for righteousness’ sake.” [Matthew 5:10.] We called on them, and were received and treated kindly; yet a depression came upon me, and I felt that all was not right.Matthew 5:10-12

Additions have been made to the number of believers. Some of the very firstclass in the community have taken their position firmly. They will have trials, for trial is the portion of all who keep the commandments of God and the faith of Jesus. If we follow Jesus, we need not expect a better portion in this world than had our Master. He our Redeemer was reproached and hated by the world, and He has told us that all who follow Him will suffer persecution for His sake. “Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness sake; for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are ye when men shall revile you and persecute you, and say all manner of evil against you falsely for my sake. Rejoice and be exceeding glad; for great is your reward in heaven; for so persecuted they the prophets which were before you.” [Matthew 5:10-12.]11LtMs, Lt 75, 1896, par. 5
How does God estimate His true followers? He says, “Ye are the salt of the earth; but and if the salt have lost his savor, where with shall it be salted? It is thenceforth good for nothing but to be cast out, and trodden under foot of men.” [Verse 13.] Here we see [that] the value of the profession of any Christian is seen in his character and life. A good man draws all his virtue from the life of Christ. If Christ is abiding in him, he has life in Christ, and will be of value in saving the souls of others from corruption.11LtMs, Lt 75, 1896, par. 7
“Ye are the light of the world. A city set on an hill cannot be hid. Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick, and it giveth light to all that are in the house.” [Matthew 5:14, 15.] An indwelling Saviour will be manifest to all with whom the human agent is brought in contact. There is the necessity of planting the truth in the heart of man; then it will control his life. For this purpose the Spirit of God is to take the things of God, the truth from the sacred Word, and stamp it on the soul. Then it will be revealed in words, in actions, in every business transaction.11LtMs, Lt 75, 1896, par. 9
“Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.” [Verse 16.] This is our work, but Satan does not want that heaven’s light shall appear and shine amid the moral darkness. He will seek to intercept every ray of light from heaven, that it shall not irradiate the soul, and reflect back glory to God. We must walk by faith, and have an increasing, growing faith, that shall resist the powers of darkness. Both the understanding and the heart need daily to maintain the most intimate and conscious connection with the pure sacred springs, the Fountain of Life, from which they derive their inspiration. There is far more blessing for the human agent, even for every one who will yield to the guidance of the Holy Spirit.Matthew 5:10-20

After Jesus had explained what constitutes true happiness, He more definitely pointed out the duty of His disciples, as teachers chosen by God, to lead others into the paths of happiness and eternal life. He knew that His disciples would frequently be disappointed and discouraged because they would meet with opposition and their testimony would be rejected by many. He showed them that at the very time, when they were passing through great suffering for His name’s sake, they would have reason for the greatest joy. He said: “Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness’ sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are ye, when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for My sake. Rejoice, and be exceeding glad: for great is your reward in heaven: for so persecuted they the prophets which were before you.” Matthew 5:10-12.25LtMs, Ms 63, 1912, par. 16
Jesus wanted His disciples not to cast away their confidence when persecuted by men. They were not to be bowed down with depression, or to mourn over their hard lot; but rather to “rejoice, and be exceeding glad;” for great would be their reward in heaven. He showed them that their trials would not be of a more severe character than others had passed through before; “for so persecuted they the prophets which were before you,” He said. [Verse 12.]25LtMs, Ms 63, 1912, par. 17
The divine Teacher impressed upon the disciples their responsibility in connection with their influence in the world. He said, “Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost his savor, wherewith shall it be salted?” Vs. 13. He showed that salt which has lost its savor is utterly useless. If they, while claiming to be His disciples, would not work the works of righteousness, they would be similar to salt which had not retained its virtue. If they desired to retain their influence for saving souls, they must possess the true characteristics of a Christian, the graces of the Spirit; their words and works must be in accordance with the teachings and the life of Christ.25LtMs, Ms 63, 1912, par. 18
“Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hid. Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick, and it giveth light unto all that are in the house. Let your light so shine before me, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.” Vs. 14-16.25LtMs, Ms 63, 1912, par. 21
“Ye are the light of the world,” said Christ. [Verse 14.] In His time moral pollution, disease, and death abounded everywhere. Darkness covered the earth, and gross darkness the people. But Christ’s disciples were represented as a light shining amid the general gloom of iniquity, its cheering, guiding rays making plain the dangers in the pathway of sinners and revealing to their darkened understanding the pathway of truth and holiness.25LtMs, Ms 63, 1912, par. 28
“Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil. For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled. Whosoever therefore shall break one of these least commandments, and shall teach men so, he shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven: but whosoever shall do and teach them, the same shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven. For I say unto you, That except your righteousness shall exceed the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, ye shall in no case enter into the kingdom of heaven.” Matthew 5:17-20.25LtMs, Ms 63, 1912, par. 32
Christ said, “One jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled. Whosoever therefore shall break one of these least commandments, and shall teach men so, he shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven.” [Verses 18, 19.] The least disobedience to any of God’s commandments is highly offensive to God. Whoever himself disobeys God, and by his example and doctrine teaches others to disobey the law, dishonors God, the great Lawgiver. God does not acknowledge such a one as a minister of righteousness, but regards him as a transgressor, a rebel against the divine government.25LtMs, Ms 63, 1912, par. 34
After Christ had explicitly declared His respect and reverence for His Father’s law, and had enjoined its exalted claims upon all, He further fearlessly declared to His followers, “Except your righteousness shall exceed the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, ye shall in no case enter into the kingdom of heaven.” [Verse 20.] In their observance of the law and in outward forms of religion, the Pharisees were very strict, while in their hearts they were corrupt, proud, and hypocritical. They were filled with bitter hatred and opposition to the will and character of Christ.Matthew 5:11

This prophecy of enmity between Satan and Christ is far-reaching. It is a delineation of an unwearied conflict between Christ and His followers and Satan and his angels and fallen men united in a desperate companionship to reproach, bruise, wound, and exterminate the followers of Christ to the close of time. This controversy between Satan and Christ was carried on here in this world. Satan was constantly afflicting the Son of God and creating prejudice in the minds of men. Not only were Christ’s doctrines and teachings perverted, misinterpreted, and wrested from their true meaning, but falsehoods followed Him everywhere. His pure character was assailed, and He was compelled to flee from one city to another because of the spies upon His track. The falsehoods and misrepresentations that the chief priests and Pharisees and Sadducees poured into the ears of the people appealed to the worst passions of adulterers, fornicators, and dishonest men, exciting a burning prejudice that made it almost impossible for Him to live upon the earth for even three years and a half after His public ministry began. Why, then, should those who bear the truth of God to the world be discouraged and fainthearted? Christ has said, “If the world hate you, ye know that it hated Me before it hated you.” John 15:18. Ye “are not of the world, even as I am not of the world.” John 17:14. The followers of Christ were forced to seek concealment in solitary places. Beneath the hills outside the city of Rome, long galleries had been tunneled through earth and rock for miles beyond the city walls. In these underground retreats the followers of Christ buried their dead; here also, when proscribed, they found a home. Many called to mind the words of their Master, that when persecuted for Christ’s sake, they were to be exceeding glad. Christ discarded kings and priests and rulers. From the men whom the world had favored, the men who had found their own enjoyment in fulsome flattery, He turned with gladness to a peculiar people, and showed which class was “blessed.” That was a representation of what will be enacted at the judgment. He assigned appropriate rewards to those who were faithful and true. Having brought into the world the accumulated treasures of heaven, He bestowed it upon them. He adopted them as His heirs according to the attributes of His character. To those who suffered for His name’s sake He declared, “Blessed are ye when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and say all manner of evil against you falsely for my sake. If in the heavenly courts no stain, no blot rests upon my Christian character, if my name stands pure and clear in the sight of angels, my heavenly Father, and my precious Redeemer, my Friend and Advocate, [so] what if poor deceived, blinded mortals circulate their lies and seek to tarnish my Christian character? Shall I be troubled? Jesus says, “Rejoice and be exceeding glad for great is your reward in heaven, for so persecuted they the prophets which were before you.” [Matthew 5:12.]Matthew 5:13

Chapter 48—Who Is the Greatest?
DA 439.2
In the ritual service, salt was added to every sacrifice. This, like the offering of incense, signified that only the righteousness of Christ could make the service acceptable to God. Referring to this practice, Jesus said, “Every sacrifice shall be salted with salt.” “Have salt in yourselves, and have peace one with another.” All who would present themselves “a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God” (Romans 12:1), must receive the saving salt, the righteousness of our Saviour. Then they become “the salt of the earth,” restraining evil among men, as salt preserves from corruption. Matthew 5:13. But if the salt has lost its savor; if there is only a profession of godliness, without the love of Christ, there is no power for good. The life can exert no saving influence upon the world. Your energy and efficiency in the upbuilding of My kingdom, Jesus says, depend upon your receiving of My Spirit. You must be partakers of My grace, in order to be a savor of life unto life. Then there will be no rivalry, no self-seeking, no desire for the highest place. You will have that love which seeks not her own, but another’s wealth. This Day With God

In casting salt into the bitter spring, Elisha taught the same spiritual lesson imparted centuries later by the Saviour when He declared, “Ye are the salt of the earth.” Matthew 5:13. Salt mingling with the polluted spring purified its waters. When God compares His children to salt, He would teach them that His purpose is that they may become agents in saving others, that through them the world might receive the grace that brings salvation. In Heavenly Places

He who receives Christ by living faith has a living connection with God and is a vessel unto honor. He carries with him the atmosphere of heaven, which is the grace of God, a treasure that the world cannot buy. He who is in living connection with God may be in humble station, yet his moral worth is as precious as was that of Joseph and Daniel, who were recognized by heathen kings as men with whom was the Spirit of God. They were representative men, and were entrusted with the most important responsibilities. Because of their living connection with God they had power with God and with men, and of them it could truly be said, “Ye are the salt of the earth.” [Matthew 5:13.] They represented the character of Christ and were as salt possessing saving qualities essential for the transformation of the character of those with whom they associated.9LtMs, Ms 54, 1894, par. 5
Daniel was beloved of God. He who brought in everlasting righteousness, the Anointed, the Holy One of God, gladly accepted the consecrated agency of His servants through whom He worked by imbuing him with His Holy Spirit and imparting to him grace for grace. Of Daniel and his companions in Babylon, the heavenly record states, “God gave them knowledge and skill in all learning and wisdom: and Daniel had understanding in all visions and dreams.” [Daniel 1:17.] Thus was the Lord God of heaven represented in the courts of Babylon. He was also represented in the kingdom of Egypt by His servant Joseph. These men were representatives of what it means to be “the salt of the earth.” [Matthew 5:13.] Through these agents God could and did work to make known His majesty to the heathen kingdoms of the world.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 9 (1894)

There are many families who could be a great blessing if they would take their belongings and settle in some of our town or country locations. Many should move into regions beyond, and become just what Christ has said that those who believe in Him should be. “Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost his savor, wherewith shall it be salted? It is henceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden underfoot of men.” [Matthew 5:13.]9LtMs, Lt 80, 1894, par. 25
Jesus Christ is one with the Father, and the whole heavenly universe is bound up with God and Christ. Heavenly intelligences manifest respect and love one for another, while giving their adoration to God. The family of heaven represents what the family on earth should be, and what it will be when every follower of Christ is fully identified with Him, when each one identifies his interest with that of his brethren. Then the prayer of Christ will be answered, when He said, “Neither pray I for these alone, but for them also which shall believe on me through their word; that they all may be one; as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us: that the world may believe that thou hast sent me.” [John 17:20, 21.] The church will then be “the salt of the earth.” [Matthew 5:13.]9LtMs, Lt 80, 1894, par. 26
The world needs the influence of every believer, as salt which has not lost its savor. Believers need the work of sanctification wrought in the soul by the operation of the Holy Spirit; they need a daily transformation of character, a renewing of the divine image, a growth in righteousness and true holiness. This must be experienced in order that the attributes of Christ may be revealed in His followers. Of His church the Lord Jesus says, “Ye are the salt of the earth.” [Verse 13.] Then why is it that the church does not realize that <through the grace given> she is to be a saving power in the world? When the church understands its position in the world, the missionary power of Christianity will be multiplied according to her light and knowledge.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 10 (1895)

It is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of men.” [Matthew 5:13.] It is the dragon that is wroth; it is the spirit of Satan that is revealed in anger and accusing. Much importance is attached to hearing and practicing the sayings of Christ. When the divine Teacher gave His sermon on the mount, He was surrounded by a large congregation. After specifying the characters that should be blessed, He said, “Ye are the salt of the earth; but if the salt have lost his savor, wherewith shall it be salted? It is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of men.” [Matthew 5:13.] All must possess Christlike attributes of character if they have any saving influence on the world. Profession of faith is nothing.13LtMs, Lt 96, 1898, par. 27
There must be a living connection with God in prayer, a living connection with God in song and praise and thanksgiving. The church may be converted, and demonstrate the truth of Christ’s words, “Ye are the salt of the earth.” [Verse 13.] May the Lord help us every one, through Christ, to obtain an experience that will enable us to place a proper value on our individual selves. We cannot avoid, while we live, being in the company of ourselves. If we do not expect much from ourselves, if we sink into cheap habits and common talk, we meet with continual disappointment in the Christian life. We are unable to rid ourselves of the idea that we are spurious coin. We have not the right ring. Self may pretend a great many things, and yet be untrue to the position it should occupy. But self may be lost in Christ, and Christ’s character appear.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 14 (1899)

Our knowledge of God and of Christ is altogether too meager. True knowledge of God is genuine and practical. Those who have this knowledge will not keep silent. They will communicate to others what they have received. They will make an entire surrender of the will to God, realizing that they are to reach higher and still higher, that they may give others the benefit of their experience as those who have been tried and proved through prayer and patience. We have been given to Christ by the Father, and no man can pluck us out of His hand. Our knowledge of the living God is to steadily increase. Christ says, “Ye are the salt of the earth.” [Matthew 5:13.] The leaven of righteousness in the life of believers is revealed by the words, the spirit, the deportment. True virtue is manifested in the daily life. Through Christ we are to be purified, made white, and tried.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 14 (1899)

“Ye,” says Christ, “are the salt of the earth.” To whom does He refer? It is to those who know the truth, to those who are handling the Word of God. “But if the salt have lost its savor,” He continues, “wherewith shall it be salted?” [Matthew 5:13.] It cannot and will not have any saving property in it. How then shall the world have a representation of the truth as it is in Jesus? That religion which has not power to propagate itself, to enlighten and save perishing souls, is thenceforth good for nothing but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of men. We cannot trust aught but pure and undefiled religion for our own salvation. The sooner we cast away every system of religion that is powerless to convict and convert souls, the better it will be for us, for such religion is spurious. What means this deadness? What means this spirit of being self-centered? Time is passing! The end is near! Whom are you trying to save from the pit of destruction? O that God would breathe in these worldly-minded souls, O that they might feel to the very depths of their being that they must watch unto prayer, that they have entrusted talents to be used now, just now, whenever God calls for their gifts to advance his work in our world. Do they hear the voice of God saying, “Ye are the light of the world”? [Matthew 5:14.] Imaginations and dreams and a knowledge of the truth are not enough. Every believer is to kindle his taper from the divine altar. The church is the object of God’s tenderest love and care. If the members will allow Him, He will reveal His character through them. He says to them, “Ye are the light of the world.” [Matthew 5:14.] Those who walk and talk with God practice the gentleness of Christ. In their lives forbearance, meekness, and self-restraint are united with holy earnestness and diligence. As they advance heavenward, the sharp, rough edges of character are worn off, and godliness is seen. The Holy Spirit, full of grace and power, works upon mind and heart.16LtMs, Ms 63, 1901, par. 29
This much we can do for God. We can put these picture-idols out of sight. They have no power for good, but interpose between God and the soul. They can do nothing to help in sowing the seeds of truth. Christ calls upon those who claim to be converted to put on the whole armor of God. Our educational institutions need to feel the reforming power of the Spirit of God. “If the salt have lost his savor, wherewith shall it be salted? it is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of men.” [Matthew 5:13.] Those who are engaged as teachers in our schools and sanitariums need to reach a higher standard of consecration. God will work with the church, but not without their cooperation. May every one of you who have tasted the good Word of God “let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven” (Matthew 5:16). Jesus says, “Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be salted? It is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of men.” The saving salt, the savor of the Christian, is the love of Jesus in the heart, the righteousness of Christ pervading the soul. If the professor of religion would keep the saving efficacy of his faith, he must ever keep the righteousness of Christ before him, and have the glory of God for his rearward. Then the power of Christ will be revealed in life and character.True Revival

They need to pray much more and consider that the convictions which flow out from a well-ordered life and a godly conversation, from a living, decided Christianity, are the preparation of the garden of the heart for the seeds of truth to be planted for a fruitful harvest, and for the Sun of Righteousness when He comes with healing in His beams. Let your righteousness so shine before men, “that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven” (Matthew 5:16). Of His people the Lord said, “Ye are the salt of the earth.” That is, you are the element that will preserve the earth from utter corruption of principle. The Saviour continued, “But if the salt have lost its savor wherewith shall it be salted? It is thenceforth good for nothing but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of men.” [Matthew 5:13.] In the illustration of the savorless salt, Christ gives a picture of those who profess to know the truth, yet in their words deny the truth. While they have a form of godliness, they know not its <saving> power. Salt that has not the elements by which to preserve from corruption, retains its form, and has the appearance of salt; but it is valueless. So it is with those who preserve the form of godliness, but do not manifest the living principles of truth in their life practices.10LtMs, Ms 11, 1895, par. 9

The Saviour said, “By their fruits ye shall know them.” [Matthew 7:20.] Christ says, “Ye are the light of the world.” [Matthew 5:14.] Christians are not to merge their ways into the ways of the world <so that the line between righteousness and wrong-doing is not discernible.> They are to sow the seed of heavenly principles in their spirit and practices. They are to stand as distinct from the world as Christ has said they should be. He has represented them thus: “A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid. Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick that it giveth light to all that are in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.” [Verses 14-16.]Manuscript Releases, vol. 19 [Nos. 1360-1419]

The inhumanity of man toward man is our greatest sin. God is yet present in our world to work through the children of men, and He would not have His people imitate the practices of the Jewish nation. They would not then be a wholesome, saving element in the world. Jesus says, “Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost his savor, wherewith shall it be salted?” [Matthew 5:13] “Without Me ye can do nothing. If a man abide not in Me, he is cast forth as a branch, and is withered; and men gather them, and cast them into the fire, and they are burned. If ye abide in Me, and My words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you. Herein is My Father glorified, that ye bear much fruit; so shall ye be My disciples. As the Father hath loved Me, so have I loved you: continue ye in My love” [John 15:5-9]. Now the condition, “If ye keep My commandments, ye shall abide in My love: even as I have kept My Father’s commandments, and abide in His love. These things have I spoken unto you, that My joy might remain in you, and that your joy might be full. This is My commandment, That ye love one another, as I have loved you” [John 15:10-12].Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 10 (1895)

Those in whose hearts the Word of God abides will use every power they have in doing the work Christ did. Every one who has received the message of Christ’s love has a work to do. Upon every Christian rests the responsibility of reflecting the light of heaven to those in darkness. Each follower of the Saviour is to proclaim the glad tidings of salvation through grace. No one is to fail of living the truth he has received. Christ says to His followers, “Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.” [Matthew 5:16.] The words of the Christian are to be carefully chosen. His deportment is to be above reproach. It is the revealing of the goodness of Christ’s character that has a decided influence for good on all with whom he is brought in contact.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 19 (1904)

Christ does not say to us, “Strive to shine.” He says, “Let your light shine.” [Matthew 5:16.] He in whose heart Christ abides can not help shining. “Let your light shine.” Do not allow your light to be dimmed by selfishness or unrighteous actions. Never gather clouds about you; for this means concealment of your light. Do not dim it by speaking words of harshness or anger. Let the light shine forth brightly to those within and without the home. Gather rays of light from Him who is the light of the world, and shine more and more brightly. Let your lamp be always trimmed and burning.19LtMs, Lt 53, 1904, par. 31

“Ye are the light of the world,” the Saviour continued. “A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid,” verse 14. Let us bear this in mind. The good works, the gracious words, the merciful deeds testify unmistakably to the character that God accepts. The heavenly light imparted by the example of Christ makes everyone who follows that example as a city that is set on a hill. He reflects light; the light cannot be hidden. “Let your light so shine before men,” the Saviour commands, “that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.” Verse 16. The Lord would have the teachers consider the contagion of their own example. “Ye are,” said Christ to His disciples, “the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be salted? it is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of men” (Matthew 5:13). The church illuminates the world, not by their profession of godliness, but by their manifestation of the transforming, sanctifying power of the truth on life and character....Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 11 (1896)

All have opportunities to witness for God and for His truth in a world of darkness. Christ said to His disciples, “Ye are the light of the world ... Let your light so shine before men that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.” “Ye are the salt of the earth; but if the salt have lost his savor, wherewith shall it be salted?” [Matthew 5:14, 16, 13.] This is the condition of the Review and Herald Office. The salt has lost its savor. The form of salt remains, but its valuable, preserving properties are gone. That which should be pure and undefiled has become corrupted with selfishness. God will not accept your work unless you become converted and can present to Him an offering in righteousness.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 13 (1898)

The Lord Jesus likened His disciples to the things most familiar to them. He compared them to the salt and the light. “Ye are the salt of the earth,” He said. “Ye are the light of the world.” [Matthew 5:13, 14.] These words were addressed to a few poor, humble fishermen. Priests and rabbis were in that congregation of hearers, but these were not the ones addressed. With all their science of learning, with all their supposed instruction in the mysteries of the law, with all their claims of knowing God, they revealed that they knew Him not. To these leading men had been committed the oracles of God, but Christ turned from them to the humble fishermen and said, “Ye are the light of the world.” These great men whom the world called wise Christ declared to be unsafe teachers. He said to them, “Ye teach for doctrine the commandments of men.” And again, “Ye are both ignorant of the Scriptures and the power of God.” [Matthew 15:9; 22:29.]13LtMs, Ms 142, 1898, par. 10
Then again there is to be an open influence. Christ says, “Let your light so shine before men that they may see your good works, and (in seeing) may glorify your Father which is in heaven.” [Matthew 5:16.] Christ exercised mercy and tenderness and compassion, that He might bless suffering humanity. He worked to restore the physical and moral image of God in man. In this work man is to be a laborer together with God. Moral and physical health and spiritual light will be communicated from the mighty Healer.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 17 (1902)

Why not decide to leave the forces or army of Satan and come under the only true banner, showing loyalty to God, which is obedience to the commandments of God and the faith of Jesus Christ? This is our decided message, stripped of all attachments that will hide its testing qualities and its power, its elevating principles. This move caused rejoicing among the heavenly angels because God and Christ rejoiced that souls were saved unto Jesus Christ. This was a spectacle to angels, to all the principalities and powers in heaven, and to men, for here is a fresh exhibition of God’s forbearance, His holiness, His mercy, and His matchless love. To every soul born into Christ’s kingdom is given a solemn charge, “Let your light so shine before men that they, by seeing your good works, shall glorify your Father which is in heaven.” [Matthew 5:16.] Pour forth upon your neighbors the rich rays of light received from the Sun of Righteousness; flash upon your friend in the world the bright gems of light and truth imparted to you abundantly from the throne of God. This is trading upon the talents entrusted. Go on from light to a greater light, catching more and more the bright beams from the Sun of Righteousness, and shine more and more unto the perfect day.6LtMs, Ms 41, 1890, par. 45
My special burden is to arouse the laymen in the church to action, that every individual shall sense his duty to become a worker together with God. Christ has represented His people as “the light of the world” and “the salt of the earth.” “If the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be salted?” [Matthew 5:13, 14.] How can those who claim to have received the transforming grace of Christ not diffuse light and grace of a Christian character to others? The saving properties of the grace of Christ in pure and undefiled religion, in practical godliness, will make their influence felt.Christian Service, volume 1

This is the service God requires of us. As Christians we are to glorify Him in our words and in our works. Profession does not count anything with God if the life is not flavored with the grace of the Saviour unto eternal life. “Ye are the salt of the earth,” He declares, to preserve it. “We are made a spectacle unto the world, and to angels, and to men.” [1 Corinthians 4:9.] Those who obey the truth become Christ’s witnesses. By precept and example, they show to others what is required by law of God. Christians are to manifest an independence to believe what the Scriptures say and to obey the word of God regardless of what their neighbors may dictate. We shall be constantly tempted to associate with unbelievers and to follow where they may lead, but we are to be faithful soldiers of Jesus Christ in the world. We may know that our neighbors consider us foolish in advocating the law of God, in declaring the it is perfect, and able to convert the soul. They may think it very unkind that we separate ourselves in practice, and make ourselves singular; but let us never say I cannot lift the straw, cannot bear this burden. Ever since Christ came into the world, men have manifested cowardice when called to acknowledge Christ. Men have shrunk as they do now from the consequences of obeying the truth. They have realized that there would be alienation between themselves and their neighbors. But shall we4 hide our light under a bushel, because others do not wish to behold it? The Lord says, “Let your light so shine before me, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.” [Matthew 5:16.] Those who follow Christ will necessarily differ from the world and from those who are merely professed Christians. The Saviour says, “If ye love me, keep my commandments.” “He that hath my commandments and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me; and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and manifest myself unto him. ... He that loveth me not keepeth not my sayings; and the word which ye hear is not mine; but the Father’s which sent to me.” [John 14:15, 21, 24.] Obedience is the test of discipleship. But how little do men appreciate the privilege of having the companionship of Christ, of being in harmony with God! They do not realize that they are Christ’s property, bought with an infinite price, and that they are to glorify God in their body and in their spirits which are his. The most important friendship is the friendship of God. There should be continual watchfulness to keep the soul pure and holy in faithfully doing his commandments.9LtMs, Ms 105, 1894, par. 24
What is the duty of those who have light in regard to the truth? Christ answers “Let your light so shine before men that they may see your good works, and glorify your father in heaven.” [Matthew 5:16.] We do not make manifest that we are on Christ’s side of the question, unless we recognize the binding claims of the divine law. Christ does not give us light in order that we may place it behind a screen, or put it under a bushel or under a bed. But we are to place it on the candlestick where it will give light to all those who are about it. For what purpose are we to let our light to shine? It is to expose the darkness to reveal moral degeneracy. Sin and unrighteousness are made to appear by contrast with righteousness. God gives us light in order that sin may be discerned. Those who think they can pass along and be in harmony with men who are going on in disobedience and transgression make a mistake in thinking that they themselves will be written in the registry of heaven as the children of God. While men profess to be Christians and yet disobey God, they are virtually saying to the sinner, “it is well with thee.” Transgression is rebuked by obedience and loyalty, those whom you may think hopeless, those whom you may judge will never see the truth, and for whose favors you think you must make concession, may be the very ones who might be saved by your steadfast faith and practical godliness. Your cowardice in shrinking from keeping God’s commandments is telling them that to keep God’s commandments is a terrible affliction although God says, “Keep my commandments and live.” [Proverbs 4:4.]9LtMs, Ms 105, 1894, par. 26
If we looked at our lives and our influence in the light of the word of God, we should realize more deeply its solemnity. We should consider the fact there are many with whom we are brought into contact who gather the only knowledge they have of God and Christ from our words and actions. Then what a positive necessity there is that our thoughts and words should be right in every respect, lest we fail to represent Christ and manifest his truth. The question is, is the heart right? Through faith and prayer, we may know that our hearts are one with the heart of Christ, and that God loves us as he loves his Son. While we were yet sinners Christ died for us, and because he kept his Father’s commandments, his abiding place was in the Father’s love. He says of his followers, “As my Father hath sent me, even so send I you.” [John 20:21.] “Ye are the salt of the earth; but if the salt have lost his savor, wherewith shall it be salted? It is henceforth god for nothing, but to be cast out and to be trodden underfoot of men.” [Matthew 5:13.] How can any remain in darkness who possess a Bible and searches the Scriptures, desiring to understand the conditions upon which eternal life is founded. But if we care not to hear the voice of God, if we are like those who were invited to the supper and begin to make excuses, and one go to his farm and another to his merchandise we shall not be benefitted by the heavenly invitation to “Come to my supper; for all things are now ready.” [Luke 14:17.]9LtMs, Ms 105, 1894, par. 28
You are now in the valley of decision. You are making a choice that will affect yourselves and your children, not in this life, but in the life that is to come. Your sentiments, your example, the manner in which you treat the plain injunctions of the word of God, the character of your influence is deciding the future destiny of your children who are the property of God, bought with the blood of Jesus Christ. You are leading your children in false paths, teaching them to lightly regard the moral standard which is to measure character. What excuse will you be able to offer when you are called to render up your account to God, when the judgment shall sit and the books be opened and every man be rewarded according to the deeds done in the body? How will your excuses stand in the light of Christ’s words? He says, “Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets; I am not come to destroy but to fulfill for verily I say unto you, till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled. Whosoever therefore shall break one of these least commandments and shall teach men so (by precept or example) shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven.” [Matthew 5:17-19.] In the councils of heaven the violators of the least commandments of God are registered as of least value among men. This decision is pronounced in the councils of the kingdom of heaven to show that not one of these moral precepts is to be trifled with. Men are not to consult their convenience or pleasure when it is a question of obeying God. God will bring them into judgment for disregarding his law. They will not be taken into the kingdom of heaven and treated as inferior subjects; they will never enter the kingdom of heaven, but in that kingdom they are pronounced as the least in all God’s creation. God does not regard those who mislead the inexperienced as proper religious teachers. He says, “Whosoever shall do and teach them, the same shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.” [Verse 19.] Those who do and teach the commandments of God are recognized in heaven as those who are one with Christ and with God, and they are accounted great by the angelic hosts. How careful should we be to obey the commandments of God and exercise our entrusted talents in showing to a disobedient world that we honor God by keeping his law which is a transcript of his character. All human intelligences are to obey the law of God, not making for themselves a lower standard than that which the Lord has given through Jesus Christ the world’s Redeemer.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 11 (1896)

Do you wish to hide your light, the truth, under a bushel? “Let your light so shine that men, by seeing your good works, shall glorify your Father which is in heaven.” [Matthew 5:16.] You will necessarily differ from the world and from professed Christians who are so [resistant to] obeying the commandments of God. “If ye love Me,” said Christ, “keep My commandments”—you are not to be ashamed of Me or of My words. John 14:15. [Read also] verse 16. “He that hath My commandments and keepeth them, he it is that loveth Me and he that loveth Me shall be loved of My Father, and I will love Him and will manifest Myself unto him.” John 14:21. “He that loveth Me not, keepeth not My sayings.” John 14:24. Here is the test of discipleship.11LtMs, Ms 69a, 1896, par. 37
But what is the duty now of those who have light in regard to the truth? “Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father which is in heaven.” [Matthew 5:16.] How shall we evidence that we are on Christ’s side of the question, to recognize the binding claims of the law of God, unless by precept and example we reveal the same? The screen is not to be cowardly placed before us in our actions. Our light is not to be put under a bushel or under a bed, but is to be put on a candlestick where it may give light to all that are in the house. The light is to shine for what purpose? To expose and condemn the darkness. Moral degeneracy prevails. Right must be made to stand in contradiction to sin and unrighteousness. The light is to discern and condemn sin, therefore those who think they can pass along and be in harmony with men who are going on in disobedience and transgression and sin make a terrible mistake, for they will find themselves written in the registers of heaven, “transgressors of God’s law.” [They are] virtually saying to the sinner, “It is well with thee.”11LtMs, Ms 69a, 1896, par. 42
God has made known His will in regard to us through His Word. “As the Father hath sent Me into the world so have I sent you into the world to save the world, but if the salt has lost its savour, wherewith shall it be salted?” [See John 20:21; Matthew 5:13.] With our Bible speaking to us individually, clear and distinct upon these subjects, how can any one of us who has the Bible in our possession remain in darkness if we read the Scriptures and search the Scriptures with the interest that we should have where eternal interests are involved? If we care not to hear the voice of God speaking to us out of His Word—if one goes to his farm, another to his merchandise, and says, I cannot comply with the heavenly invitation, “Come to My supper for all things are now ready”—if the invited souls begin, with one consent, to make their excuses, the Lord is dishonored, His invitation slighted. [Luke 14:17-19.]11LtMs, Ms 69a, 1896, par. 46
Christ’s words will appear in all their significance, “Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfill” every specification of the law just as it was given in Eden, just as it was proclaimed from Sinai. “For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, not one jot or one tittle shall pass from the law, till all be fulfilled. Whosoever therefore shall break” (violate or disobey) “one of these least commandments, and shall teach men so,” (by precept or example,) “shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven.” [Matthew 5:17-19.] The councils of the universe of heaven register them as the least of value among men who compose the human family. This is the decision made and pronounced in the heavenly courts, the kingdom of heaven.Manuscript Releases, vol. 21 [Nos. 1501-1598]

Do not think that you must blanket your faith in order to obtain patronage. The reason that we as a people establish sanitariums is that the souls as well as the bodies of men and women may be saved. The truth is never to be concealed, for we are to be God’s light-bearers to the world. Christ says, “Ye are the salt of the earth.” By your pure doctrines, your correct deportment, your prayers, your Christlike example, you are to exert a preserving influence in the world. “But if the salt have lost his savor, wherewith shall it be salted?” [Matthew 5:13].21MR 287.6
“Ye are the light of the world.” Thus He regards those who believe and practice the truth. When truth is mingled with error and selfish indulgence, its saving properties are destroyed. God calls upon the people on whom His light has shone to present the truth as it is in Jesus, to show by their genuine goodness the power of truth, to reveal in their lives the saving principles of the gospel. By their words and actions they are to cause the preserving qualities of truth to appear with distinctness. Let them remember that the men and women in the world form their opinion of God by the characters of those who profess to serve Him. The gospel is good tidings of great joy. Its promises bring light to the soul and shine forth as light to the world. Therefore Christ says to those who have received the gospel, “Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.” [Matthew 5:16.]16LtMs, Lt 7, 1901, par. 10
Again, He illustrates the living reality of a Christian life by the saving properties of salt. “Ye are the salt of the earth,” He says, “but if the salt have lost his savor, wherewith shall it be salted?” Solemn question! If the saving principles of truth are not exemplified by professing Christians, what benefit does the world derive from their lives? When salt has lost its savor, “it is henceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of men.” [Verse 13.] When Christians do not reveal Christ, of what value are they? Are they not like savorless salt, “good for nothing?” But when they reveal in their lives the saving properties of the truth, poor, sin-hardened souls are not left to perish in corruption. Good works are seen; for the living principles of righteousness cannot be hidden. The gospel acted is like salt which contains all its savor. It is powerful in the saving of souls.16LtMs, Lt 7, 1901, par. 11
Christ inculcates the value of obedience, saying, “Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets; I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil. For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled. Whosoever therefore shall break one of the least of these commandments, and shall teach men so, he shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven: but whosoever shall do and teach them, the same shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.” [Verses 17-19.] Is it not best for us to keep the commandments, so that through us God can reveal His power? If all God’s people were obeying His commandments, they would indeed be lights in the world.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 16 (1901)

The Lord Jesus will work miracles for His people. In the sixteenth of Mark we read: “So then after the Lord had spoken unto them, He was received up into heaven, and sat on the right hand of God. And they went forth, and preached everywhere, the Lord working with them, and confirming the word with signs following.” Verses 19, 20. As servants of Jesus Christ, all who love God supremely and their neighbor as themselves will feel a sacred responsibility resting upon them to act their individual part, to keep alive in the church members the saving principles that Christ has brought into our world. And they are pledged before God to give soul, body, and spirit to the efficiency of the church, preserving the love of God in their own hearts. Love to one another, love to God and their neighbor is the principle which should bind them together, that they shall fulfil the words in Christ’s commission: [Matthew 5:13-16 quoted]. Here is the whole matter expressed in a few words. Then follows His claims.22LtMs, Ms 165, 1907, par. 9
The object of His coming is not to represent less the claims that God has upon them, but to enforce these obligations of the human to the divine more decidedly. Verses 17-20 quoted. Then the Lord Jesus gives the most decided, far-reaching explanation of the law of God. The righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees had become more pretense than vital in its godliness. Christ brought life and immortality to light by the word of the gospel. The truth as it is in Jesus lies at the foundation of all righteousness and sanctification. “Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled” [Matthew 5:6]. The word of Christ is eternal truth, and is the bread of life. If we eat of this bread, we must die to self; the narrow sphere of personal, selfish interests must be enlarged, for it is impossible for a Christian to live unto himself. Self must be hidden in Christ, and divine help has been pledged to the aid of all those who will surrender their whole heart to God. It is in order that we may die to self that we are called upon to endure trials. In our sorest distress, Christ comes to our refuge. When every professed follower of Christ will make a covenant with God by sacrifice, will be determined that he will not indulge in selfish gratification, in studying his own ease, but will diligently plan to do God’s service, then all will find the Lord a present help in every time of emergency.2MR 277.1
Christ has given His precious life to make it possible to establish a church that will be capable of caring for sorrowful, tempted, perishing souls. He has bought us with His own life, shed His own blood in order that He might wash away the stains of sin, and clothe us with the garments of salvation. The church must build on Christ by carrying out as His representative the mind and spirit of Christ. His people are to be links in the golden chain that binds souls one to another and to God. We are to put forth personal efforts for the saving of souls that are ready to perish. Christ said, “Ye are the light of the world” [Matthew 5:14].
