We read of One who walked this earth in meekness and lowliness, who went about “doing good,” who spent His life in loving service, comforting the sorrowing, ministering to the needy, lifting up the bowed down. [Acts 10:38.] He had no home in this world, only as the kindness of His friends provided it for Him as a wayfarer. Yet it was heaven to be in His presence. Day by day He met trials and temptations, yet He did not fail or become discouraged. He was surrounded by transgression, yet He kept His Father’s commandments. He was always patient and cheerful, and the afflicted hailed Him as a messenger of life and peace and health. He saw the needs of men and women, and to all He gives the invitation, “Come unto me, all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me, for I am meek and lowly in heart, and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” [Matthew 11:28-30.]Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 15 (1900)

“Come unto me all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” There is only One who can help you, for you think you know best in all matters. Christ writes, “Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me, for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.” [Matthew 11:28-30.] When you undertake to manufacture a yoke for your own neck, it is, and always will prove, galling to the neck. When you abide in Christ you wear His yoke of submission. When you take yourself in hand and chastise yourself in the place of criticizing and accusing your brethren, the difficulties you charge to your brethren will be found to be the imagination of an unsanctified mind.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 15 (1900)

The Lord will not let His human treasure with Christ, its Head, go into the enemy’s rank without every effort made in their behalf. Their only hope is to do the commandments of God. This is the gospel which has been sounding down along the lines to our time. To all Christ sends the invitation, “Come unto me, all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn of me, for I am meek and lowly in heart, and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.” [Matthew 11:28-30.] For ages this invitation, Come, all ye who are weary and heavy laden, has been ringing in clear tones above the world’s confusion and trouble. God will not give man up to his own way and will, to be lost, without a determined effort to recover him. The aim of Christ’s ministry, the scope of His far-reaching mercy and power, is without bounds.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 15 (1900)

And when human beings choose to follow Adam’s example, the Saviour still invites them, “Come unto me, all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart, and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” [Matthew 11:28-30.] But if man refuses to yoke up with Christ, if he refuses to learn of the great Teacher, he cannot receive God’s protection.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 15 (1900)

I have a deep interest in your souls. The Lord has been calling you and your wife, saying to you, “Come unto me, all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” Rest in Jesus—this is what you need. “Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart, and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” [Matthew 11:28-30.] Your mind is not now at rest or your heart full of joy, because you are not willing to yoke up with Christ.15LtMs, Lt 79, 1900, par. 14
Christ spoke with the authority of greatness as with a clear, distinct voice He said, “I am the light of the world.” [John 8:12.] “I am the bread of life.” [John 6:35.] “I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life.” [John 14:6.] “I am the good shepherd. ... My sheep hear my voice, and they know me, and I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand.” [John 10:14, 27, 28.] “Come unto me, all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me, for I am meek and lowly in heart, and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.” [Matthew 11:28-30.]Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 15 (1900)

We are ever to be learners of Christ. He has invited us, “Come unto me, all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart, and” (in your own experience, as you partake of my spirit and principles) “ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.” [Matthew 11:28-30.] Christ’s yoke is a yoke of submission and obedience.15LtMs, Lt 64, 1900, par. 14
My brother, my sister, it is a great privilege to be invited by the greatest Teacher the world has ever known, “Come unto me.” “Learn of me.” [Matthew 11:28, 29.] He can give us the purest, highest instruction, instruction that is as enduring as eternity. Then learn of Christ His meekness and lowliness, and you will find rest unto your souls.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 16 (1901)

The Lord would have the restraints broken that keep His work bound about. Those who unite with Christ are not to accept yokes that will prove a hindrance to them in their work for Him. He says, “Come unto me, all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me, for I am meek and lowly in heart, and ye shall find rest unto your souls. This is the One who says to us today, “Him that cometh to me, I will in no wise cast out.” [John 6:37.] Then cling to the mighty One. Do not, I beseech you, dishonor your Redeemer by turning from Him to seek help from human beings. Help those who are weak in faith by showing firm confidence in God. Do not encourage these souls to lean on any human prop. Do not insult the Saviour by turning from His promises, from the fullness of His love and assurance, to human resources. Trace not a word of doubt in the One who loves you, whose you are by creation and by redemption. Go not for help to those who are just as dependent as you. Christ has declared, “Without me ye can do nothing.” [John 15:5.] “Come unto me, all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” [Matthew 11:28.] Christians, is not this promise of value? Had there been a surer way of finding rest, would not the Lord have pointed it out to His weary, fainting children? But He has told us of no way in which to find rest except by wearing His yoke. “Take my yoke upon you,” He says, “and learn of me, and ye shall find rest unto your souls.” And the dear Saviour adds, “My yoke is easy and my burden is light.” [Verses 29, 30.]Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 16 (1901)

Your past experience does not give evidence that you have been following the meek and lowly Jesus. He was the Majesty of heaven, the King of glory. But He humbled Himself in our behalf, taking the place of a servant. And He says to us, “If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.” [Matthew 16:24.] “Come unto me, all ye that labor, and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart, and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.” [Matthew 11:28-30.] When you accept this invitation, you will express yourself in an altogether different way.Manuscript Releases, vol. 21 [Nos. 1501-1598]

I presented the invitation, “Come unto Me, all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you, and learn of Me, for I am meek and lowly in heart, and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For My yoke is easy, and My burden is light” [Matthew 11:28-30]. Simple enough, is it not? Thus it appears. The promise is large and far-reaching. Rest for the soul is comprehensive. It implies much. It means deliverance from constant, perplexing, uncertainty. The word rest is repeated—“I will give you rest.” In wearing Christ’s yoke and learning from Him His meekness and lowliness, “Ye shall find rest unto your souls.” Here is a giving by Christ, and on our part, an acceptance of the promise, a conscious finding, a sense of relief from all perplexing doubt.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 16 (1901)

God calls upon you to straighten yourself out. Be a man. Put away your extravagance. Extravagant ideas must not be indulged under the name of medical missionary work. It is high time that we became Christians in heart. Integrity, self-denial and humility should characterize our lives. Foolish expenditure has for so long time been a part of your experience that I sometimes fear you will never learn the meaning of the words, “If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.” [Matthew 16:24.] “Come unto me, all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.” [Matthew 11:28-30.]Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 16 (1901)

The Lord and your brethren desire to see you properly fill your position of trust. But you will greatly dishonor God unless you change in your manner of working. Study the invitation of the Saviour: “Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart, and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.” [Matthew 11:28-30.] Christ is the only One who can relieve the oppressed, weary soul. No human power can accomplish this. His yoke is a yoke of restraint and obedience. In wearing it, we realize that rest is found in service.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 16 (1901)

Your personal influence is not good. Unless you change, you will spoil the efficiency you might otherwise have. As long as you follow your human devising, you will grow in self-confidence. Your self-sufficiency is a continual snare to your soul. You try to reduce it to a science, but it is vain philosophy. When you see your own weakness, you will be drawn out to make the Lord God your defense and your sufficiency. You need to become as a little child, for there are many things for you to learn. “Come unto me,” Christ says, “all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart, and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” [Matthew 11:28-30.] If you drink at the living fountain, you will increase day by day in knowledge. “Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” This is a prescription for the healing of all spiritual, mental, and physical ills. It is Christ’s gift to those who seek Him in sincerity and truth. He is the mighty Healer. Then comes another invitation. “Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart, and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.” [Matthew 11:28-30.] Wearing Christ’s yoke and learning of Him the lesson of meekness and lowliness, we find rest in faith and confidence and trust. We find that Christ’s yoke is easy and His burden light.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 16 (1901)

Every teacher should have an intelligent understanding of what Christ is to him individually. When you know that the Lord is your strength and efficiency, you can commit the keeping of your soul to God, as unto a faithful Creator. In doing this you will honor God far more than if you were to go to a neighbor, or to write a letter, seeking for advice. While I was in Australia many persons sent letters of inquiry to me across the broad waters of the Pacific. It took two or three months for them to receive an answer. Standing by their side all the time was One full of power and grace, saying, “Come unto me, all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.” [Matthew 11:28-30.] What more could He say? Why did they not go to Him with their perplexities? Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart, and ye shall find rest unto your souls. The hard, cruel spirit which judges and condemns has left the trace of the enemy upon everything. But mercy is to come in and lay her broad impress upon every plan. The world is to see principles different from those which have hitherto been presented. Christ has erected the cross. He does not call upon any man to manufacture tests and crosses for His people. He presents His requirements before them and gives them the invitation, “Come unto me, all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart, and ye shall find rest unto your souls. Christ can do nothing for those who are yoked up with the enemy. His invitation to us is, “Come unto me, all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.” [Matthew 11:28-30.] When in our daily experience we learn His meekness and lowliness, we find rest. There is then no necessity to search for some mysterious science to soothe the sick. We already have the science which gives them real rest—the science of salvation, the science of restoration, the science of a living faith in a living Saviour.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 16 (1901)

Our Lord was a successful worker with the common people. This was the class that always heard Him gladly. Why, oh why, I inquire, are there so few that carry any burden for souls? His heart was yearning to make souls happy. “Come unto Me,” He said, “all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you, and learn of Me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.” [Matthew 11:28-30.] Try it, fathers; try it, mothers. Many of you are church members, but you are not Christians. You cannot be Christians until you become assimilated to Christ, doing His works. Your Redeemer calls upon you to have a spirit and character akin to His. Many ask, Why does not the Lord work miracles in our day, as He did when He was upon this earth? Live in the home and in the world the life of a humble Christian, test the Lord by your vigilance, doing faithfully the work He has committed to you, and His miracle-working power will be shown by the change in your hearts.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 16 (1901)

We can walk as Christ walked only when we abide in Him. We can do medical missionary work in a Christlike manner only when we are one with Him; only when we wear His yoke. To those who bear His yoke He promises rest. He urges all to come to Him with their burdens. “Learn of Me,” He pleads; “for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For My yoke is easy, and My burden is light.” [Matthew 11:28-30.] Yoked up with Christ, we receive spiritual life and power; for then we are “laborers together with God,” and of us as church members it can be said, “Ye are God’s husbandry, ye are God’s building.” [1 Corinthians 3:9.] Through sanctified co-operation with Christ, every one of us can form a life character that will be accepted in the heavenly kingdom. We need the deep moving of the Spirit of God. We need the love of God in the soul. All along the way we see souls dropping out of the ranks. Why? Because they are not yoked up with Christ. Many who love God and who seek to honor God fear that they have no right to claim His rich promises. They will dwell upon their painful struggles and the darkness which encompasses their path, and in so doing they lose sight of the light of the love that Jesus Christ has shed upon them. They lose sight of the great redemption that has been purchased for them at infinite cost. Many are standing afar off as if they were afraid to touch even the hem of Christ’s garment, but His gracious invitation is even extended to them, and He is pleading, “Come unto Me, all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. I have counsel for you from the Lord. I have been praying for you at the family altar and during the night season. I have been asking our heavenly Father to adjust matters to His own name’s glory. In the night hours, I have walked the floor of my room, my prayers ascending to God, that He might guide and control every one connected with the work at Nashville. God says, “If those who have allowed a wrong spirit to control them will come to Me in repentance and will confess their sins, I will hear their prayers and will pardon them. But if they do not come to Me, if they consult human agencies and allow themselves to be leavened with the leaven of human malice and evil-surmisings, they will surely be separated from My work.” “Come unto Me, all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Let the truth of the gospel be in the heart and upon the lips of the teacher; let men practice the truth, and not a lie, and there will be an integrity that will bind heart to heart and soul to soul. Then written documents binding men to be true to principle will not be essential. We are in a most solemn period of this earth’s history. We are preparing for eternal life. The simplicity of the truth as it is in Jesus will break down Satan’s strongholds. Worldliness, pride, self-sufficiency, self-exaltation, and lukewarmness which now prevail in the world have come into our own churches. We have a most solemn work to do. We must be able to say, in storm and tempest, “My anchor holds.” He who builds upon any other foundation than that which has been laid builds upon shifting sand. God calls for a reformation. But he who seeks to bring about a reformation without the aid of the Holy Spirit’s reviving power will find himself adrift. Men may still learn the things that belong to their peace. Mercy’s voice may still be heard, calling, “Come unto Me, all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you, and learn of Me, for I am meek and lowly in heart; and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For My yoke is easy, and My burden is light.” [Matthew 11:28-30.] It is only when spiritual life is given that rest is found and lasting good secured. We must be able to say, in storm or tempest, “Our anchor holds.” He who builds upon any other foundation than that which has been laid, builds upon shifting sand. He who seeks to bring about a reformation, without the aid of the Holy Spirit’s reviving power, will find himself adrift. God calls for a reformation. Those who turn from human foolishness and frailty, from man’s seductive arts, from Satan’s planning to Christ—the shepherd and bishop of our souls—will stand secure upon the platform of eternal truth.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 18 (1903)

Christ stands before us as the pattern Man, the great Medical Missionary—an example for all who should come after. His love, pure and holy, blessed all who came within the sphere of its influence. His character was absolutely perfect, free from the slightest taint of sin. He came as an expression of the perfect love of God, not to crush, not to judge and condemn, but to heal every weak, defective character, to save men and women from Satan’s power. He is the Creator, Redeemer, and Sustainer of the human race. He gives to all the invitation, “Come unto me, all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Christ is our Leader. Clothing His divinity with humanity, He humbled Himself, that He might stand in person at the head of the human race. He laid aside His kingly crown and yielded up His high position as Commander of the angels, who loved to do His bidding. For our sakes He became poor that through His humiliation and poverty human beings might be made rich—heirs to an eternal weight of glory. The Saviour came to the world in lowliness and lived as a man among men. On all points except sin, divinity was to touch humanity. Living on this earth as a man among men, Christ answered the question, “Can man keep the law of God?” He was tempted in all points like as man is tempted, “yet without sin.” [Hebrews 4:15.] He was tempted that He might know how to succor those that should afterward be tempted. He became a man of sorrows and acquainted with grief. “He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities; the chastisement of our peace was upon Him; and with His stripes we are healed.” [Isaiah 53:5.] He gave Himself to the world as a spiritual teacher, a genuine medical missionary. O that our medical workers realized what privileges they have. They would know by practical experience what it means to hear and obey the invitation, “Come unto Me, all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you, and learn of Me; for I am meek and lowly in heart, and ye shall find rest unto your souls. Chapter 33—“Search the Scriptures”
1SM 242.1
It is of the highest importance that every human being endowed with reasoning powers should understand his relation to God. In our schools the work of redemption is not carefully studied. Many of the students have no real conception of what the plan of salvation means. God’s word is pledged in our behalf. He who is touched with the feeling of our infirmities invites us: “Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. I call upon all who have any desire to be saved: Turn ye, turn ye, for why will you further provoke the wrath of an offended God? Why will you be companions of those who love not the truth and the Word—those who never submit their wills to God’s will; those who in words and theories and worldly maxims deny the faith, and give heed to seducing spirits, misconstruing, yes, perverting, the truth? Are you not afraid of the next reproof from God? Who will now, while it is called today, while Mercy’s sweet voice is still heard calling, repent of their evil course, and follow Him who has said: “Come unto Me, all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Professing Christians need a decided reconversion. When they obey the Word of God, practicing the teachings of Christ, they will find that His gentleness has made them great. “Learn of Me” is the Saviour’s command. [Verse 29.] Yea, learn how to present truth under the divine influence of the Holy Spirit. There is power for those who receive Christ; for we read, “As many as received Him, to them gave He power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on His name.” [John 1:12.] His promise is that if we accept His invitation, we shall be anointed with the oil of gladness, which is emptied from the two anointed ones into the hearts prepared to receive it. He who works for God is to be filled with a spirit of love and humility, not of boasting and parade. His life is to show that he has accepted the invitation, “Come unto Me, all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. The word given me by the Lord during the past night is that God does not direct His people to look to this sister for counsel. If we should encourage this sister in the work she thinks she is called to do and in the messages she bears, much confusion would be caused. The Lord has not given her the work of saying what this one shall do, and what that one shall do. He says to His people, “Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light” (Matthew 11:28-30). “If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him. But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering. For he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed. When Satan can come in, disguised as an angel of light, and the one who entertains his specious suggestions of the wonderful talents I possess and lauds me as a man that can supersede all others—it is the devil’s sophistry. You may preach the gospel and visit the sick as a devoted medical missionary; help the poor, protect the fatherless, and practice the entire catalog of religious activities; and yet cultivate the spirit that shall spoil the work and never be worked by the Holy Spirit of God at all. It may be done to glorify your individual self, doing certain things through habit and the force of surrounding circumstances. Certain influences, when set in operation, bring about certain results. We may do things because others do these things. A Christian, in order to obtain a symmetrical, Christlike character that all heaven commends, is to understand the message of Christ to every sinful soul: “Come unto Me, all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you, and learn of Me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. This experience in humility and lowliness can be learned in no human school, but the divine Teacher says, “Learn of Me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.” [Matthew 11:29.] Jealousies and evil surmisings and exalted aspirations will not become woven into the web to spoil the pattern. God help our physicians to be so guided that their every action will be intensified, and the independent individual, though man, will be of entirely a different character than has ever been seen in the working of the human mind. To keep up a reputation by outward appearance is miserable, degrading bondage. The Lord has given His life for us, and He will give just the qualifications of character that will make us appreciative of other men as men whom God will use. We have no right to exalt our individual selves above others. The Lord has graciously supplied the most talented with all that he has, which he uses and consumes daily, without any thought of the sacred gift, without feeling his dependence upon God. When he feels like it, he will do some miserable work which grieves the Holy Spirit of God and puts Christ to open shame. His human actions, his human indignation, and his human speech are cutting to the soul, and his works tear to pieces. Is that pleasing to God? No! I answer, No.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 19 (1904)

We read of One who walked this earth in meekness and lowliness, who went about “doing good” (Acts 10:38), who spent His life in loving service, comforting the sorrowing, ministering to the needy, lifting up the bowed down. He had no home in this world, only as the kindness of His friends provided it for Him as a wayfarer. He saw the needs of men and women, and to all He gives the invitation, “Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. I have taken my position, brethren. I am not going to enter into controversy over anything that may be presented. Last night I woke at ten o’clock and remained awake for several hours. During that time the whole matter was laid open before me, and I was instructed that I must bear the testimony given me and then leave matters with the Lord. It is not my work to try to make people believe the message given me. When the assertion is made, “Some one has told her,” I am to make no response. On that point, the conflict is over for me. I shall tell you the truth as it is in Jesus. And when any one comes to me to know about this thing or that thing, I shall point them to the One who has said, “Come unto Me, all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Every Christian should give strict attention to the formation of character. He who by faith daily lays hold firmly upon the Invisible One will reveal to all around him the character of Christ Jesus and will become a pattern of meekness. With lowliness of heart he will accept Christ’s invitation to the weary and the heavy laden. Instead of unloading his burdens upon his neighbor, with whose heart-sorrows and burdens he is unacquainted, he will seek rest by taking upon himself the yoke of Christ. “Come unto Me,” pleads the Saviour, “all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.” [Matthew 11:28-30.] All who accept His invitation will bear testimony that His yoke is indeed easy and His burden light.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 19 (1904)

The Lord calls upon every member of the church to be on guard. The Voice said, “Be on guard.” The Lord Jesus has warned us in His Word of what shall be. Will any one say of this warning, “This does not agree with our ideas,” and pay no attention to the warning? The Lord has lifted the danger signal, that all may hear and take heed to the warnings. The great danger is in exalting man. Human beings cannot bear exaltation. Jesus invites us, “Come unto Me, all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. CM 35.1
The knowledge of the most learned man, if he has not learned in Christ’s school, is foolishness so far as leading souls to Christ is concerned. God can work with those only who will accept the invitation: “Come unto Me, all ye that labor and are heavy-laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you, and learn of Me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For My yoke is easy, and My burden is light.” Matthew 11:28-30.—Testimonies for the Church 6:318 (1900).Selected Messages Book 2

If all will wear Christ’s yoke, if all will learn in His school the lessons that He teaches, there will be sufficient means to establish gospel medical missionary work in many places.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 19 (1904)

There is a great work to be done among church members. Many who are not called upon to enter the public ministry may do much good in their home church by speaking advisedly with their lips. The talent of speech should be used to glorify God. Too often it is used to convey evil reports. This grieves away the Holy Spirit. Let us remember that we have a Saviour who has bidden us come unto Him with all our burdens. He will give us peace of mind, and He, too, will adjust that which to us seems so full of entangling difficulties. “Come unto Me,” He pleads, “all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Although you may be in trouble, you can go forward with confidence, knowing that you have an abiding Christ. He tells those who are in trouble and perplexity to bring their burdens to Him. He does not tell them to go to their neighbors and talk the matter over. To those who are weary and heavy laden He says, “Come unto Me, ... and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you, and learn of Me; for I am meek and lowly in heart, and ye shall find rest unto your souls. Do not talk of the faults of others. Take care of your own garden. See that your own heart is cleansed by the power of God. When trouble comes, instead of getting out of patience, instead of fretting and worrying, go to the Lord, and tell Him all about it. Has He not said, “Ask, and it shall be given unto you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you?” [Matthew 7:7.] Go right to the Lord, and in humility of mind, tell Him about your trouble. Do not go to human friends; for they have all the burdens they can bear. Go to the One who gave His life for you. You have been bought with a price; therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are His. Do not walk in self-sufficiency, thinking that you are capable of guiding yourself aright. “Learn of Me,” Christ says, “For I am meek and lowly in heart.” [Matthew 11:29.]19LtMs, Ms 118, 1904, par. 17
“Ye shall find rest.” [Matthew 11:29.] How? By living experience. Because Christ’s yoke is a yoke of patience and gentleness and longsuffering. He, the Prince of the heavenly host, humbled Himself. He took upon Himself human nature and stood at the head of humanity, that He might teach fallen man how to be a partaker of the divine nature. Those who learn His meekness and lowliness learn also how to love one another as He has loved them. They will reach the place where they refuse to criticize and condemn others. They learn that there is committed to them a work that no one else can do for them—the work of learning of Christ. When we place ourselves in His hands, He shows us the possibilities and probabilities before us and bids us go for help to One infinitely higher than erring human beings.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 19 (1904)

He who would become master of the situation in any line of work, and especially as the head of a training-school, must become intelligent, as a wise man, and by a Christian example in word and deed reveal to his students that he obeys the words of Christ and that his character has been transformed in accordance with the divine. In many things there is great room for improvement. “Come unto Me,” the Saviour pleads, “all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Please write to me, telling me what you are doing and how you are getting on. I have a word from the Lord for my son Edson. You are not to load yourself down with responsibilities. For a long time you have been in the midst of perplexities, and you must now compel yourself to give your brain rest. Place all your burdens upon the great Burden-bearer. Heed the invitation: “Come unto Me, all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. I am instructed, as the Lord’s messenger, to tell you to make God your trust and to leave your perplexities in His hands. He will bring to pass His will. Now is your time to find rest of soul. Let not your dependence be in man, but in God. You must every moment make Him your trust. You, and all the Lord’s people, have a work to do. We are to build the old waste places and raise up the foundations of many generations. The great issue regarding the law of God will soon be upon us. We are to work as those who are called and chosen of God. Our influence is to be united with that of the great Physician in repairing the breach and restoring paths to dwell in. Christ is the author of the Old and the New Testaments, and these should be the study of our students. The simplicity of the Word is to be preserved. Living Temple should not be used as a textbook; for it contains sentiments that should not be brought before the students. The Word of God needs not such interpretation as is given in these representations. God expresses Himself. He cannot be defined by any human intelligence; no man could present Him as He is. Those who try to do this are on forbidden ground. Christ has revealed God in character, and let all who wish to know God believe in Jesus Christ, and work the works of Christ, and teach the lessons of Christ. If they truly believe in Christ, they will receive power to become the sons and daughters of God. This is their work. Christ calls, “Come unto Me, all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Christ was the Prince of heaven, but He made an infinite sacrifice and came to a world all marred with the curse brought upon it by the fallen foe. He lays hold of the fallen race. Take My yoke upon you, and learn of Me; for I am meek and lowly in heart, and ye shall find rest unto your souls. The gospel is associated with light and life. If there were no sunlight, all vegetation would perish, and human life could not exist. All animal life would die. We are all to consider that there is to be no extravagance in any line. We must be satisfied with pure, simple food prepared in a simple manner. This should be the diet of high and low. Adulterated substances are to be avoided. We are preparing for the future, immortal life in the kingdom of heaven. We expect to do our work in the light and in the power of the great, mighty Healer. All are to act the self-sacrificing part. Every one of us is to learn of Christ. “Learn of Me,” He says, “for I am meek and lowly in heart, and ye shall find rest unto your souls.” [Verse 29.]Selected Messages Book 3

I made the simplicity of faith so plain that a little child could receive it. He said, “I have confessed every sin I have any knowledge of.” I repeated his words in my talks on the point of faith, thus, for two or three mornings, and told the man he was trying to get hold of something material for him to acknowledge as faith. I told him all he had to do was to take God at His word without any remarkable demonstration, but to say, “Lord, I believe Thy Word. I take Thee at Thy own statement, ‘Him that will come unto me I will in no wise cast out.’” [John 6:37.] Thus we labored to explain that faith was not a remarkable demonstration of feeling. Faith takes God at His word. You send your faith within the veil where Jesus is, and talk with God, [saying], “You said it, Lord. You said it: ‘He that cometh unto me I will in no wise cast out.’ ‘Come unto me all ye that labor and are heavy laden and I will give you rest. Shall we follow Christ as our pattern? He came to teach men by His example. In His work of self-sacrifice was seen not one jot or tittle of selfishness. He who was rich in the heavenly courts left all His riches and power and came to this world, clothed in the humble garb of humanity. For our sakes He became poor, that we through His poverty might be rich. Like Him, His followers are to be a blessing to the world. It is time for us to search our own hearts and to heed the words of Christ, “Come unto Me, all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you, and learn of Me; for I am meek and lowly in heart, and ye shall find rest unto your souls. There is much to be done. Souls who have never yet heard the truth for this time will in the future hear and obey. We need you and your wife with your experience just as you are. Will you tell me what you are doing. I am teaching the things that have made me what I am—a Seventh-day Adventist. The Lord Jesus will help every one who will be obedient. “Come unto Me,” He says, “all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. I have a burden that I carry day and night. I have been asking my heavenly Father to guide me in judgment. I dare not place before you all the things I should like to, because the time in which we are living is perilous. I am instructed that it is not human agencies that we meet now in opposition; it is satanic agencies who are deceptively working through human agencies. Therefore you are to be very peaceful, wearing the yoke of Christ, heeding the invitation, “Come unto Me, all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you, and learn of Me; for I am meek and lowly in heart, and ye shall find rest unto your souls. Why do we not so prepare our hearts that we will take the promise, and, through the operation of the Holy Spirit, receive Christ as an ever-abiding power, to be our sufficiency, our acknowledged power for maintaining our strength, that we may reveal to friend and foe that we have an abiding Christ? It is the privilege of every one to exert an influence, individually, as one who has received Christ and who believes in Him. My brother, my sister, yield your whole mind and soul and body to the Lord. Rest in the arms of your compassionate Saviour. You need not rush hither and thither to obtain relief from human agencies. Christ is nigh, inviting you, “Come unto Me, all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you, and learn of Me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For My yoke is easy, and My burden is light.” [Matthew 11:28-30.] Let no one hear from your lips words of complaint or of judging. The Lord has not placed any of us on the judgment seat. Simply come to Jesus. Lay your burdens at His feet. “I will receive you,” He declares; “I will give you rest.” [2 Corinthians 6:17; Matthew 11:28.]21LtMs, Ms 11, 1906, par. 4
You have a battle to fight, and so have we all. We can make this battle very much more severe by turning away from Christ and from wearing the yoke that He asks every one of us to wear. Does He not tell us the truth when He says, “My yoke is easy”? [Verse 30.] If we manufacture yokes for ourselves, as many are doing, we shall find them extremely galling; but if we take the yoke that Christ has prepared for us, and become meek and lowly in heart, self will be hid with Christ in God. This is the correct position for us to occupy.Testimonies for the Church, vol. 8
Chapter 21—The Value of Trial
8T 123.3
The furnace fires are not to destroy, but to refine, ennoble, sanctify. Without trial we should not feel so much our need of God and His help; and we should become proud and self-sufficient. In the trials that come to you I see evidence that the Lord’s eye is upon you and that He means to draw you to Himself. It is not the whole, but the wounded, who need a physician; it is those who are pressed almost beyond the point of endurance who need a helper. Turn to the stronghold. Learn the precious lesson: “Come unto Me, all ye that labor and are heavy-laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you, and learn of Me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For My yoke is easy, and My burden is light.” Matthew 11:28-30.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 21 (1906)

Take My yoke upon you, an learn of Me; for I am meek and lowly in heart, and ye shall find rest unto your souls. Take My yoke upon you, and learn of Me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.” [Matthew 11:28-30.] Here is an experience that each individual soul must gain for himself. Position does not make the man, but the man may do great honor to Christ in wearing His yoke, in manifesting His meekness and His lowliness of mind. Christ came to stand at the head of humanity, to reveal that humanity may be continually improving, to become one with Christ, under His control. By beholding Him in speech, in patience, in good works, he comes to be like Him in the formation of his character. The crooked kinks are straightened.21LtMs, Ms 130, 1906, par. 42
This whole chapter is our lesson. It is the science of soul saving, if we will take heed. There are souls ready to perish in their sins who are to be labored for. God calls for workers to bring souls, through the presentation of the truth, to be converted from their sins; and these converted souls are to speak the words of truth to others. As they live in newness of life, their testimonies are just what is needed at this time. Many will make efforts in weakness, but Christ says, “Take My yoke upon you, and learn of Me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. The history of the first great rebellion is being repeated in the history of God’s people in these last days. The blindness that Elder ______ is exhibiting in the issuing of his writings makes me very sorry for him. He is spoiling his record. The Lord has repeatedly warned him, but he has bound himself up with the doctor and his intrigues, and he does not discern things in their true light. The snare of flattery has had its influence upon him when he should have understood its danger. In Battle Creek we are seeing fulfilled the words of the apostle, “Some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits and doctrines of devils.” [1 Timothy 4:1.] O how terrible it is for one to reject light and to scoff at the ministers of God. The indulgence of ambition, the desire to be first, has spoiled one whom God would have honored had he heeded the invitation, “Come unto Me, all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. All should love their brethren and respect and esteem their leaders; but they should not make them their burden-bearers. We are not to pour all our difficulties and perplexities into the minds of others, to wear them out. “If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him. But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering.” [James 1:5, 6.] Jesus invites us, “Come unto Me, all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. It is those who accept the warnings and cautions given them who will walk in safe paths. Let not men yield to the burning desire to become great leaders or to the desire independently to devise and lay plans for themselves and for the work of God. It is easy for the enemy to work through some who, having themselves need of counsel at every step, undertake the guardianship of souls without having learned the lowliness of Christ. These need counsel from the One who says, “Come unto Me, all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you, and learn of Me; for I am meek and lowly in heart; and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.” [Matthew 11:28-30.]22LtMs, Lt 8, 1907, par. 9
In every church bear the message that man is not to exalt his own judgment. Meekness and lowliness of heart will lead men to desire counsel at every step. And the Lord will say, “Take My yoke upon you, and learn of Me.” [Verse 29.] It is our privilege to learn of Jesus. But when men, full of self-confidence, think that it is their place to give counsel, instead of desiring to be counseled by their experienced brethren, they will listen to voices that will lead them in strange paths. “My sheep,” saith Christ, “hear My voice, and follow Me; but a stranger will they not follow.” [See John 10:27, 5.] Would that every minister realized the solemn responsibility resting upon him to carry the work forward without blemish. Let those who have been an opposing force to God’s work confess their wrongs. It is a terrible wrong. You have been striking against God’s ministers, through whom He is working to convert souls. And you have been striking against the hand of Christ, whose property they are. There may now be a slight change for the better; but unless you are thoroughly converted, and your souls are changed, you will go on as you have gone before. They profess to be Christians but they do not comply with the conditions upon which the promise of God is fulfilled. Jesus has said, “Come unto me.... Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light” (Matthew 11:28-30). The reason why many are in a state of unrest is that they are not learning in the school of the Master. The submissive, self-sacrificing child of God understands by experience what it is to have the peace of Christ.26The Review and Herald, September 22, 1891.
