Context of Psalms 55:22
20God will hear and humble them —yes, the One enthroned of old. Selah Nothing changes—they do not fear God. 21My companion put forth his hands against those at peace with him, as he violates his covenant. Smoother than butter was his speech, yet war was in his heart. His words were softer than oil, yet they were drawn swords. 23Cast your burden on Adonai, and He will sustain you. He will never let the righteous be shaken. 24But You, O God, will bring them down to the Pit of destruction. Bloodthirsty, deceitful men will not live out half their days. But I—I will trust in You.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 22Cast thy burden upon the Lord - Whatever cares, afflictions, trials, etc., they may be with which thou art oppressed, lay them upon him. And he shall sustain thee - He shall bear both thee and thy burden. What a glorious promise to a tempted and afflicted soul! God will carry both thee and thy load. Then cast thyself and it upon him. He shall never suffer the righteous to be moved - While a man is righteous, trusts in and depends upon God, he will never…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 22Cast thy burden upon the Lord - This may be regarded as an address of the psalmist to himself, or to his own soul - an exhortation to himself to roll all his care upon the Lord, and to be calm. It is expressed, however, in so general language, that it may be applicable to all persons in similar circumstances. Compare Matthew 11:28-29; Philemon 4:6-7; 1 Peter 5:7. The Margin here is, “gift.” The “literal” rendering would be, “Cast upon Jehovah what he hath…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 16-23Verses 16-23 In every trial let us call upon the Lord, and he will save us. He shall hear us, and not blame us for coming too often; the oftener the more welcome. David had thought all were against him; but now he sees there were many with him, more than he supposed; and the glory of this he gives to God, for it is he that raises us up friends, and makes them faithful to us. There are more true Christians, and believers have more real friends, than in…Read the comment
