Context of Psalms 139:3
1For the music director: a psalm of David. Adonai, You searched me and know me. 2Whenever I sit down or stand up, You know it. You discern my thinking from afar. You observe my journeying and my resting and You are familiar with all my ways. 4Even before a word is on my tongue, behold, Adonai, You know all about it. 5You hemmed me in behind and before, and laid Your hand upon me.

Commentaries on Psalms 139:3
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 3Thou compassest my path - Margin, “winnowest.” The Hebrew word - זרה zârâh - means properly “to scatter,” to cast loosely about - as the wind does dust; and then, to winnow - to wit, by throwing grain, when it is thrashed, up to the wind: Isaiah 30:24; Jeremiah 4:11; Rth 3:2 . Then it means “to winnow out;” that is, to winnow out all the chaff, and to leave all the grain - to save all that is valuable. So here it means that God, as it were, “sifted”…Read the comment
