Context of Numbers 32:12
10The anger of Adonai was aroused that day, and He swore an oath saying: 11‘The men who came out of Egypt, from 20 years old and upward, will not see the land I promised to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, for they have not followed after Me with a whole heart— except Caleb son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite and Joshua son of Nun, for they were wholehearted after Adonai.’ 13The anger of Adonai burned against Israel and He caused them to wander in the wilderness 40 years until all the generation doing that evil in Adonai’s sight was gone. 14“Now look, here you stand in the place of your fathers as a brood of sinful men to add more to Adonai’s great wrath against Israel!

- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 6-15Verses 6-15 The proposal showed disregard to the land of Canaan, distrust of the Lord's promise, and unwillingness to encounter the difficulties and dangers of conquering and driving out the inhabitants of that land. - Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 12Caleb is identified as a Kenizzite, a descendant of Esau (see Genesis 36:10–11). This suggests that Caleb was not born as an Israelite. He may have been a convert (someone who joined Israel’s faith). Even so, he became fully part of Israel’s life and worship. Later, Caleb represented the tribe of Judah when Moses sent out the twelve spies to explore the promised land (Numbers 13:6).Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 6-196-19. Moses said unto the children of Gad and to the children of Reuben, Shall your brethren go to war, and shall ye sit here--Their language was ambiguous; and Moses, suspicious that this proposal was an act of unbelief, a scheme of self-policy and indolence to escape the perils of warfare and live in ease and safety, addressed to them a reproachful and passionate remonstrance. Whether they had really meditated such a withdrawal from all share in the war…Read the comment
